Sri Lanka dog sanctuary
I volunteered for 4 weeks at the Sri Lanka dog sanctuary and had a great time. Was meant to try different volunteering but ended up staying with the dogs as the days have good structure and usually finish at midday. Kavi was amazing and we got to take in some stray puppies. And you can visit the sanctuary any time of day which I found great as the dogs are so sweet!!

Childcare Volunteering TMR Sri Lanka
I had a great time volunteering with The Mighty Roar in Sri Lanka doing the childcare program. I helped out in the local kindergarten - it was a very rewarding experience and I loved spending time with the children and assisting the teachers. Chamo was really helpful in the program, with translation and organisation. Overall I really enjoyed my time volunteering, and would definitely recommend it!

Kenya Childcare
I spent 3 weeks in Nairobi taking part in the Childcare programme.
I was greeted by one of the team’s fantastic drivers and driven to the accommodation. I stayed with the loveliest host family who from the get go were extremely welcoming and accommodating. The family treated us as their own, allowing us full access to their home so we could use their living room, kitchen, and washing machine. The bedrooms and bathrooms were basic but cleaned regularly and only shared with volunteers. I went during a quiet period so was only ever sharing with 2 others at one time but can imagine if there were lots of volunteers it could get crowded. As Nairobi can be a bit unsafe we often spent our afternoons at home making the most of their rooftop (which has an incredible view of the city), gardens, or their living room on the rainy days. Eugene was always on hand if we wanted him to accompany us anywhere in the city for our downtime. Nairobi can be an intense and sometimes scary city, especially as a female, so it was comforting knowing we had a local to ensure we were always safe. He also showed us local restaurants who did reliable and good food should you ever want to eat outside of the accomodation. The fork and spoon restaurant near the office did the best chicken and masala chips so became a regular lunch spot.
Eugene also helped us set up M-PESA, Kenya’s payment system, which was useful to have to pay for everything including the local buses and shops. This can also be set up if you purchase a safaricom sim from the airport, but can also be set up later if you need.
We had breakfast and dinner provided every night but did our own lunch (reimbursed 300KHS per day) ; although if we asked for lunch to be made, the family always accommodated. The food was fantastic, especially their chapatis, and they often asked what we would like for dinner in advance. There was a constant supply of fresh bread if you wanted toast or a sandwich and they always had fruit available throughout the day and at dinner time.
We were driven from the house to the children’s home each morning, and could chose how short or long our days there were. The Children’s home was a beautiful safe haven within the slum and the team were very welcoming and friendly. Initially it was overwhelming seeing how basic their lifestyle was and how little the children have however all of the children, aged 2 to 16, were so joyful and kind. They taught us some songs and we played playground style games with them. We also sometimes helped the older children’s with their chores such as laundry, cooking, and carrying their water from the truck to the “well”. I absolutely loved my time at the Children’s home and will miss the children very much.
I did both the available weekend trips, Masai Mara Safari and Zanzibar, and could not recommend them more.
The safari was such a fun weekend, with our driver making regular stops on the long drive allowing us to see the Great Rift Valley and have some lunch (all food for the weekend was included) before arriving at our camp. As it was a quiet weekend I was lucky to have my own “tent”, which was absolutely perfect with a huge comfy bed and large en-suites. We did both a sunset and full day drive where I got to see so many animals and our driver was very knowledgable.
Zanzibar was the highlight of my entire trip. The island is so beautiful and felt very serene compared to the chaos of Nairobi. Emmanuel, our tour guide, made the entire trip so much fun from the second he picked us up at the airport all the way to dropping us off; he was born to be a tour guide and had us laughing the whole weekend. We stayed in Stonetown just a 20/30min drive from the airport and the accomodation was again basic but clean with the staff always on hand to help with luggage or extra towels if needed. All of the activities were so much fun and allowed us to make the most of our short trip. The only thing I’d change is how long I’d spent there but unfortunately it was my last weekend so I had to fly home on the Sunday; if you are going during your trip I’d really recommend trying to add a couple of extra days onto your time in Zanzibar although I don’t think it would ever feel like enough.
Overall I would really recommend volunteering in Kenya with The Mighty Roar/CIVS, especially the Childcare with 3 weeks feeling like the perfect amount of time.

A beautiful volunteering experience
Wow what can I say, I spent 16 weeks in Tanzania on the medical programme and I can confidently say it was the best decision I’d ever made. Through my time, I’ve gained so much hospital experience and skills that have set my up perfectly for my nursing studies in September. Aside from the programme, the local team in Tanzania is the most welcoming, kind lovely group of people I’ve ever met, they truely became my family. Special mentions go to Exaud, Neema and Ibra not to mention the amazing cleaners and chefs!! I’d like to also say how incredible Alice, Samson, Naomy and Emmanuel are. Their generosity and love was never ending, both the way they do anything for their volunteers to ensure they have the best experience possible and personally for me how I was taken in as one of their own I definitely won’t ever forget. I would recommend volunteering in Tanzania to anyone who is interested in finding a home away from home💕endless love and thank you Child Hope and Mighty Roar!!

Memorable, Meaningful Experience
From when I first booked my trip, TMR have been nothing but supportive and responsive. I volunteered for 3 weeks on the sea turtle program and our leader, Tharu was always a friendly face. She was kind, informative and has done amazing work with the turtles. I was confident my work was meaningful and ethical and I loved every second of it. The program is very flexible, so I also helped a little with the street dog program. I really enjoyed working with the dogs, it was very hands on and the program leader, Kavi was very sweet and helpful.
During my trip, I participated in the 9-day travel experience. This allowed me to see other parts of the country, personal highlights for me being Mirissa, Ella and Sigiriya. This tour was very fast paced, we got to see a lot and I found it an excellent way to bond with other volunteers. Our tour leader Karu, was very kind and knowledgeable, and he always made sure everything and everyone was accounted for. While I loved the travel experience, one of the locations we visited during, an elephant sanctuary was a hard watch for many volunteers due to its unethical treatment of the elephants. It would be nice if further research was done into this destination to ensure that TMR is supporting ethical places during their tours. Overall, I loved my time in Sri Lanka and volunteering at TMR and I would recommend it in a heartbeat.

Amazing Experience
I spent four weeks with The Mighty Roar in Sri Lanka. I really enjoyed the ten day travel experience around Sri Lanka learning more about the country and seeing how the locals live. Tharu was very supportive on the sea turtle programme and Chamo answered all my questions about the childcare programme! They are both very dedicated to their roles! 😀

3 week turtle programme
I stayed for a total of 3 weeks on the turtle programme to allow myself to fully immerse myself and enjoy my time in Sri Lanka. It very much is an authentic experience; being served local foods (which may be a bit spicy for some), seeing the less touristy sides of Sri Lanka, and actually contributing to the local environment/community. Everyone was so welcoming and really made me feel at home. It is certainly a hostel experience, so if you are expecting a hotel or haven’t stayed in hostels/with other people before I’d recommend preparing yourself. This isn’t to say that the accommodations are bad, it just may take some getting used to if you haven’t done anything like this before. The weekend trips are amazing! I went on the hill safari and had the best time. The staff were well organised and really helpful. They were well educated in their field of programme and taught us what they know. There are also party/karaoke nights, so if you are more of a party animal this may be something that’d interest you.

2 week travel and volunteer Sri Lanka
I did the 2 week travel and volunteer experience at The Mighty Roar in Sri Lanka and it was amazing! All the staff members, especially Kavi!, were lovely and all extremely welcoming. I completed the dog program with Kavi; where we fed ,cleaned and treated the sanctuary dogs if they had any injuries (all very friendly). Then we went on a route to feed the local street dogs for the remainder of the day, we even fed puppies! We were always done by lunch, approx 12 midday. Then got to walk the dogs later in the evening around sunset.
As a part of my program I, and a lot of the other members of our group, did the travel aspect of the trip. It was 9 days travelling round Sri Lanka; Mirissa, Ella, Kandy and a few other locations. Tour was fast paced but it meant we got to see a lot. Was a great opportunity to get to know the group and experience Sri Lanka. Would highly recommend. Thoroughly enjoyed my experience with The Mighty Roar in Sri Lanka! Thank you to everyone involved

My experience with TMR Sri Lanka was…
My experience with TMR Sri Lanka was overall amazing. I made some great friends and the highlight was definitely the weekend trip to the Maldives. They offer some amazing add on experiences and were accommodating of schedule changes on my end. The teaching was very wholesome and the kids were so sweet. The staff as well made the experience so enjoyable and were very friendly. My only note to make the experience better would be better advertising on the website before you book. As much as I loved the teaching, I did go in with some different expectations and believe a more detailed description of your daily schedule as well as where/how many kids you teach and the standard of teaching would be helpful so you know exactly what you are signing up for. However this is most definitely not a comment on the team in Sri Lanka - they were amazing!

I had an amazing experience at the TMR Mighty Roar in Sri Lanka. The teaching and childcare programme was so lovely. I loved getting involved with the arts and craft and teaching and it was so rewarding.
Chamo thank you for organizing everything and making sure everything goes to plan. You have been amazing . The accommodation is right across the beach and the food is good if you don't mind a little spicy food. The weekend trips are also really good and the extra activities arranged outside of volunteering .
I am so sad to leave and have met some lovely people and made great memories
Thanks

Medical Elective with TMR Sri Lanka
I recently had the opportunity to complete my midwifery elective placement, and my friends and I chose the programme offered by The Mighty Roar in Sri Lanka. Overall, the experience was very positive.
On arrival at the airport, a member of the team was there to collect us. They were easy to find and helpful in assisting with getting SIM cards and exchanging money. However, it’s worth noting that we waited at the airport for around 2.5 hours for other volunteers to arrive before we did the transfer.
Once we arrived at the accommodation, we were warmly welcomed by the team and provided with lunch. From this point onwards, the experience was excellent.
The team in Sri Lanka were incredibly friendly and supportive. Chamo was particularly helpful, responding quickly to any questions or concerns we had throughout the placement.
We stayed at “Uncle’s house” in a four-person room with a private bathroom. The accommodation had everything we needed, including reliable air conditioning, mosquito nets, and secure lockers. Uncle and his wife were very welcoming and kind. During our stay, he had rescued kittens, which we had the opportunity to help care for - this really reflected his caring and compassionate nature.
In terms of the elective placement itself, Thalini, who runs the programme, was very organised and ensured we travelled safely to and from placement each day. She was also responsive and helpful with any queries. As outlined by the programme, the placement is observational. The medical staff in the hospital were friendly, and some were willing to teach. However, it is important to be proactive - asking questions and engaging where possible to get the most out of the experience.
We also took part in the hill country and safari weekend trip, which was very enjoyable. It was well organised, and we felt there was a good amount of time spent at each location.
The programme is located around 20 minutes by tuk-tuk or car from Hikkaduwa, where there is a beautiful beach, as well as a range of restaurants, shops, and supermarkets.
Meals provided by TMR Sri Lanka were good, with lots of cultural food, which was a really nice part of the experience. Also have filtered water dispensers which was very much appreciated
Overall, this was a rewarding and memorable experience that I would recommend to other students considering an elective abroad. The support from the team and the opportunity to experience healthcare in a different setting made it highly worthwhile.

Sri Lanka teaching
I took part in the teaching programme with the Mighty Roar team in Sri Lanka. Some positives of my experience was that I was able to meet and teach some lovely students who I bonded with over our 3 week experience. The leaders of the volunteering were very kind and lovely people who cared about our experience. However, I found the accommodation quite shocking. We had seen photos online but our room did not meet those standards. The room shown online was much better quality and our room did not live up to those standards. We were in an 8 bed dorm room with an en-suite bathroom. There was no storage for bags so the narrow space between the bunk beds was used for our bags which meant there was no space on the floor. It felt cramped and dirty. The bathroom had a sewage issue which is understandable as we knew it wasn’t a 5* resort, however it was not nice smelling sewage everyday. Our room had bugs and the air con was broken. They came to fix the air con when we made a complaint, however it kept breaking down after. Onto the teaching, we felt the programmes were very over subscribed to, to the point where we felt unhelpful. We only had around 2 hours of teaching time 4 days a week. We were told we could take part in other volunteering activities, however those were super full and they were also not the activities we paid to take part in. I would have happily stayed here for a week, however 3 weeks was too long for us due to the standards. I want to thank the lovely team at the mighty roar as they were the highlight of our experience.

Sea Turtles
As soon as I was picked up from the airport I immediately felt safe and looked after. The sea turtle conservation programme is one of the best things I have ever done. Tharu is one of the kindest people you will ever meet, explains everything to you and shows passion about what she is talking about, which is infectious for you and everyone around.
