Loved it!
Tharu is so dedicated to her conservation work with the turtles! I learnt so so much from her and it's truly inspiring. Also the conservation work with the turtles is ethical and they really consider the turtles and what they need all the time.
I had a great time with TMR. Met some amazing people and had lots of fun on the weekend trips. Also ended up on Sri Lankan national news because of the celebrations we did for the new year!! Highly recommend.

Had the most amazing 2 weeks at The Mighty Roar Sri Lanka. All the staff members are very welcoming and friendly. I was volunteering with the street dogs, Kavi was amazing so friendly. I definitely have loved every moment with the dogs, whether it was preparing there food, walking them, feeding the street dogs and of course giving them lots of love and attention. This has definitely been very rewarding and also eye opening to see. I'm so happy that I decided to come and volunteer, definitely something I wont forget.

Long live the turtles! ☺️
My daughter (11) and I had a brilliant experience volunteering for the turtle programme with Mighty Roar! Not only were we part of a meaningful and ethical programme, but we also worked and were guided by well informed and hardworking staff, lead by our multi talented Tharu ☺️. Everyone is so helpful and kind, you are in the safest hands and they do so much to make guests feel welcome, from fun activities to giving valuable tips about the local sightseeing…and more… we will miss you all, but hope to be back! Thank you so much for all you do! 🥰

The Mighty Roar was an absolutely incredible experience. Not only do you get to help the local community and wildlife, you get an insight into the culture of the country. Whilst I was at The Mighty Roar, it was the singhalese new year and the volunteers provided us with our own celebration day in which we could experience what Sri Lankans do during their new year celebrations. I, myself did the turtle programme which included checking the hatchery for baby turtles, then releasing them, burying eggs we find from the beach and daily beach cleans. I found this an interesting and inspiring experience where you feel as though you’re making an impact on the community you’re surrounded by. Tharu, the person in charge of the turtle programme was extremely helpful and kind in my time at The Mighty Roar and make the experience that much better. Personally, I would recommend any of The Mighty Roar’s programmes to anyone, especially the turtles. It’s an affordable but amazing way to experience new country’s and feel as though you’re helping the community too.

TMR Sri Lanka - Medical Elective
I spent 4 weeks in Sri Lanka with The Mighty Roar doing the medical programme for my medical elective placement. I really enjoyed the variety of placements seen during my time here and experiencing both western medicine and Ayurvedic traditional medicine. The placements were all organised efficiently by the team and our transport to and from placement was included in our trip. I have been able to go on a couple of weekend trips to visit different places across Sri Lanka including Galle, Hiriketiya and Kandy. I have had a great time and the whole team here are very friendly and accommodating especially Thillini who is the medical programme coordinator.

I recently spent 4 months in Sri Lanka doing the dog program and then the turtle for 1 month , the local team are so welcoming and supportive in anything you need and make the experience 100 times better for you , I have loved working on both programs but the dog program was very special to me as it made my time there even better getting to look after and help all the strays dogs , I do recommend doing the dog program as it’s not one of the most popular programs but can do with helping giving all the doggys a better life . But what made the dog program even better was thanks to kavi who is in charge of the dog program, she was really amazing and hardworking with the dogs and the volunteers.
An amazing experience, and such a beautiful country and community

Family volunteering Sri Lanka
We came as a family (mum and 2 daughters) and did the childcare project. We had the best time during our stay. The staff were so friendly and welcoming. They allowed us to get involved with other projects including street dogs amd turtles and my kids loved doing this. The accommodation was clean and cool with air con and very safe and secure. I would bring my family again and recommend to other families.
Overall the experience was very humbling and incredible. We loved it. Thank you TMR

Proceed with caution
If you are considering booking, read the Terms & Conditions carefully and compare them against the Volunteer Handbook rather than relying on the handbook alone.
I booked a volunteer programme with The Mighty Roar and later had to ask to postpone due to an emergency. I made that request 23 days before the start date, but it was refused and treated as a cancellation.
What bothered me most was how confusing the information was. The Volunteer Handbook gave the impression that programme changes could be made for a £39 administration fee, including changes to the start date and duration. But when I asked to postpone, I was told that no changes were allowed within 60 days and that my case would instead be treated as a cancellation.
That difference was not clear to me at the time, especially because the handbook was presented as the main guide for preparing for the trip.
I was not asking to cancel. I was asking to postpone because of an emergency. In the end, there was no flexibility, no partial refund and no meaningful resolution.
⸻
Update: I have edited this review for accuracy after revisiting the documents and correspondence.
My concern remains the same: the handbook and the Terms & Conditions were not clear enough in relation to each other and that caused confusion in my case.
After many months of trying to resolve this privately, I am sharing my experience publicly.

Tanzania Medical Programme - 6 Weeks
I volunteered with The Mighty Roar for 6 weeks doing the medical programme in Tanzania for my medical elective. I had a fantastic time. At the hostel, the staff often went above and beyond to help me with any problems I encountered - I particularly want to thank Exaud and Daniel the driver for this. The volunteer community was welcoming and fun, and made my stay in Tanzania one I will never forget. I had no issues with the food, and Felix the chef was always very open to suggestions - barbecue night and pizza night were very much appreciated. In the hospital I was given access to all departments, and I found that as long as you were proactive and inquisitive, there were learning opportunities at every turn. The one thing I would do differently is learn more Swahili before going out! Thank you very much TMR for giving me a life experience I will never forget.

I loved my time at the mighty Roar doing turtles with Tharu. She is very lovely and welcoming as is the rest of the staff.
They really go above and beyond, for example, organising a whole day of celebrations for New Year's for the volunteers.
The only slight pitfall for me was the food is a little bit repetitive but still good.

TMR teaching Sri Lanka …
I spent 4 and a half weeks at the mighty roar volunteering on the teaching programme. The local team are so accommodating and supportive to whatever you might need making the experience 10x easier. It has been such an amazing experience to be able to work in the local schools, a lot of this is a big thanks to Chamo who is in charge of the teaching programme, she has been so amazing and so supportive.
This has been such an unforgettable experience.

TMR MEDICAL ELECTIVE SRI LANKA
I spent 6 weeks with TMR in Sri Lanka doing my medical elective and had the best time! It was a great way to get experience of what healthcare looks like in other countries and very different to the UK. The doctors all spoke english and were very friendly and happy to teach. The placement is mainly observational, as there is limited resources and most patients dont speak english, so if you are looking for a very hands on elective, i wouldn't recommend this. I, however, really enjoyed the placement as it was very well organised by Thilini, one of the staff from TMR Sri Lanka, and there was a lot of variety in the departments of the hospital we got to go to, and we were able to request specific specialties if we were interested in something in particular. Placement is 8-11am monday-thursday, which allowed for lots of time to explore the local towns and beaches, which was a highlight of the trip! Additionally, we got to go to an aryuvedic herbal clinic once a week and learn about traditional medicine in sri lanka, which was super interesting and really fun.
In terms of the TMR accommodation, it was basic, but we were prepared for this as it looked exactly like the pictures online. it had everything we needed, and was very clean. The food was really nice and there was a lot of variety, allowing us to try a lot of different sri lankan food. The staff are extremely helpful and really friendly, and they really made the trip special ! In terms of the complex, it felt very safe. there was a security guard on the premises all night and there was one main gate to exit and enter. The complex is across the road (1 min walk) to a really stunning beach. I went with friends however i can imagine TMR Sri Lanka would be a great place for solo travellers as there is a really nice welcoming vibe and there is always different day and evening activities going on like surfing, kayaking, football, volleyball, bonfires, karaoke nights, etc! All volunteers are allowed to get involved with the other programmes where appropriate, so it allows you to meet a lot of people and experience a lot of new things. The accomodation was 20 mins from Hikkaduwa town by tuktuk, and had so many lovely cafes, shops, and restaurants to try.
Special thanks to all of the team at TMR Sri Lanka for making my stay so memorable !

South Africa- Amakhala
I spent 4 weeks in South Africa volunteering at Amakhala game reserve. The experience itself was absolutely incredible, I met so many lovely people, and had some amazing once in a lifetime experiences. The staff at Amakhala were so lovely and helpful, and made the experience so fun.
The accommodation was well kept, with a constant food supply in the kitchen, and clean rooms. The staff at the at the accommodation were equally as lovely.
The Mighty Roar were helpful in getting everything sorted, and making it an easy process. The communication was good leading up to the trip, any questions I had were answered quickly.
However, I’m not sure if this applies to all the volunteer schemes, but I found out at Amakhala that you can just book straight through them to volunteer, for a lower price than what the Mighty Roar charge, and the application process is a bit easier. If I had known this before booking, I’m not sure I would have gone through the Mighty Roar, and I think if I was to go to Amakhala again, I would book directly through them.
Having said this, the constant support and communication from the Mighty Roar is very helpful, and if it’s your first time going it might be worth booking through the Mighty Roar, just to get that extra support.
