Great possibility for an impact
They are doing a great job in restoring and rebuilding the reef system in Tianjar. As a participant of the diving volunteer program you are actively participate in it from day one onwards.
I wished they would grant volunteers more scientific insights beside "simply" deploying the structures. That would make it a 5 star experience for me.

The staff in TMR are all so lovely and make the experience. Kavi and Chamo make you feel at home. The food is similar day to day. The medical elective is very much just observing.

Medical elective experience
I had a great time doing my medical elective in The Mighty Roar in Sri Lanka. The accommodation was comfortable and any issues were addressed by staff very quickly! The food was ok, very repetitive and with no menu we never knew what we were having when. The staff were very very friendly and made us feel very welcome. They answered any questions we had and became good friends. The hospital placement was as I expected, very much observation but I do feel I learnt a lot about the cultural differences compared to the UK. I would recommend this highly to anyone wanting a more chill medical elective.

4 Months at TMR Sri Lanka
I did the childcare program in Sri Lanka for 4 months and I had the time of my life. The staff were so lovely, specifically Tharu and Chamo, they always made my day so much better. Chamo runs the childcare and teaching programs and she does the most excellent job, you can really tell how passionate she is about working with the kids. Tharu runs the sea turtle conservation program, although I didn’t partake in the program, I would still see Tharu around the accommodation and she was always so lovely to talk too. I feel like I could go to either of them with any problem, to do with either something about volunteering or the accommodation, or a personal issue, and not only would they be able to sort it out quickly, I also would feel comfortable to ask them, as they are just such lovely ladies. The location of the accommodation is amazing, its just across the road from a lovely quiet beach. The accommodation was nice and always clean to a high standard. I always felt so at home here, all the staff were so lovely and welcoming, I miss it so much already!!

The Tanzania elective has been such an amazing experience! The staff at the hostel could not have been more helpful and the food was always amazing. Lots of opportunities for day trips to experience all Tanzania has to offer. Would recommend to anyone who is considering it!

I went to Tanzania for 4 weeks…
I went to Tanzania for 4 weeks volunteering in childcare and the dog sanctuary. To put it simply it was the best month of my life I met so many incredible people and made forever friends. The staff are extremely welcoming and kind they really made the trip what it was, I went on the safari weekend trip and Zanzibar both of which were fantastic and have left me with a million memories. If you are thinking of going somewhere to volunteer I would 100% recommend going through the mighty roar and I’d especially recommend visiting Tanzania. All of the staff at the hostel, the drivers, the locals are extraordinarily welcoming and kind. I loved volunteering at the kindergarten and the dog sanctuary the children are so lovely and full of life it was truly such a gift getting to teach and play with them, the dog sanctuary is a great place to volunteer aswell I fell in love with all the crazy doggy’s. Some are very underweight or injured and it’s amazing seeing that they are getting the help and resources they need. Thank you so much to the TMR team❤️

Turtle conservation in Sri Lanka
I did the turtle conservation in Sri Lanka for 4 weeks, it was definitely the WORST part of my travelling. The only good parts were some of the friends I made and the weekend trips which were great. The actual conservation was badly run, we had no one running our project for the first 2 weeks, when the first turtle hatched there we couldn’t get hold of staff to help us, we were given very limited information and their family dog ended up eating the baby turtle on the beach. The accommodation is dreadful, there were cockroach infestations, leaks, black mould, termites and only 1 plug socket for 8 people, as well as no privacy curtains. The food they supplied was dreadful, it made me so sick I almost had to go to the hospital and overall really wasn’t nice, there’s flies all over it and someone found a maggot in their food. The staff weren’t friendly or welcoming apart from charith, you couldn’t go to them for help or anything and apart from charith I found their English wasn’t good enough for them to help anyway. I chose this project because I thought it would make a difference but its not much better than the other turtle hatcheries along the coast very little information or education given and I felt like we were being exploited for our money. I had friends recommend the mighty roar because they had gone to other programs with them but I think the Sri Lanka location, especially the turtle project is really badly run.
Medial Experience in Tanzania
I had a really positive experience volunteering on the medical program in Tanzania with The Mighty Roar. It was a great opportunity to experience healthcare in a different environment and learn from local medical professionals. I gained a lot of insight while also getting to experience the local culture.
The team at The Mighty Roar were friendly and supportive throughout the trip, and everything was well organised. I also enjoyed meeting other volunteers and exploring Tanzania outside of the placement on trips to the hot springs and the Kilimanjaro day hike.
Overall, it was a rewarding experience that gave me valuable memories and a broader perspective on healthcare and travel. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone interested in volunteering abroad.

Medical Programme Tanzania
I have just finished 3 weeks in Tanzania doing the medical programme as part of my elective. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here.
The staff at the hostel are all incredibly helpful and friendly, going out of their way to help with any issues. The food was absolutely delicious and there was plenty of it, thank you to Felix!!
The hostel has activities available most evenings such as waterfall trips, sip and paint and karaoke. We also have the option to access the pool in the hotel next door!!
I spent my time at Mawenzi Hospital, we were able to rotate round whichever specialities we wished, making for a very interesting placement experience. All the staff were very welcoming and happy to translate and answer any questions.

Medical elective in Moshi
I came to Moshi in Tanzania for my medical elective. I had the opportunity to see different specialists, which was really eye opening. Mighty roar organised some really nice trips including a visit to the waterfalls and hotsprings, and a hike to Kilimanjaro base camp. When we missed a trip they rescheduled for a smaller group of us which was very accomadating. Transport was provided to get to places around the town which made it feel safe. I would highly recommend this experience.

Tanzania - Medical Elective
I came to Tanzania for a 3 week medical elective with The Mighty Roar and I had an amazing time! The staff are accessible at all times and cannot do enough to help you. They have plenty of connections and knowledge of the local area which allows you to really explore and enjoy your time here. I had a really nice time in the local hospitals too. All round this was an incredible experience and I cannot thank the TMR Tanzania team enough. ❤️

Turtle conservation
I’ve spent the past 3 weeks volunteering for TMR doing the turtle conservation programme, and I can confidently say that my experience was made a million times better thanks to Tharu, who led the turtle programme. Her passion for turtles and conservation is so inspiring, and she shows so much care and kindness to every volunteer. Whenever we needed anything, she was there to help, and always went above and beyond, organising group beach cleans and making leaflets about turtle conservation awareness that we distributed in town. I have learnt so much from her in only 3 weeks, and I know it is not just my experience that she has positively impacted! There are so many opportunities to get involved with turtles, and it is so amazing to see the full cycle of releasing hatchlings to seeing an adult turtle laying eggs. It is also a huge strength of the programme that it is completely ethical and no turtles are kept for tourism purposes, they are all released as soon as is safe for them. This is a great opportunity, and as a solo traveller, I have met so many lovely friends at TMR!

Sri Lanka Travel & Volunteer Experience
I had a great time in Sri Lanka with TMR on the 2-week travel & volunteer experience, starting 4th April.
From the beginning, the UK team were great and responded very quickly to any questions I had before I had even booked.
The local team were excellent and were all very friendly. From the minute I arrived I felt very much at home. The accommodation was comfortable and the meals were all very nice. The accommodation in Akuralla had a very friendly and social atmosphere to it amongst volunteers. I took part in the Sea Turtle conservation while here, which was a very rewarding and interesting experience.
After the week volunteering, we went on the 9-day tour of Sri Lanka. This was really great and we got to see a lot of the country in a relatively short space of time. It did feel slightly rushed at times however, but considering how much we experienced during a short time, this is to be expected. The time in Mirissa was the highlight of this tour for me.
Overall, I could not recommend this more. I had a brilliant time, and will definitely consider looking into TMR again in the future.

Amazing 2 week holiday volunteering
I have just returned from a 2 wk holiday volunteering on the street dogs programme in Sri Lanka for TMR. As someone in their fifties i was a lot older than most of the other volunteers but i didn't feel out of place once.
The staff there are extremely warm and friendly and are always on hand to help. The shared rooms are typical of hostel accommodation which can be off putting for some but are comfortable and to be honest I didn't spend much time in the room as when I wasn't helping with the dogs, I was getting involved with the extra fun activities that the staff had arranged for us.
I would highly recommend going on one of the weekend trips that are organised for the volunteers as you get to see a lot more of the country and learn about the culture.
Doing the street dogs programme was hard work but extremely rewarding and I felt like I was making a difference to their lives. The coordinator, Kavi was lovely and works very hard to make sure you are ok and that the dogs are happy. I would recommend contacting her if you want to volunteer with the dogs before you go as there are things like toys and medical items which are unavailable over there which would be much appreciated.
I was also lucky enough to get involved with releasing the baby turtles which was amazing.
I would love to return again one day.

My stay was truly made ten times better by Chamo, Tharu and Kavi who are the sweetest ladies ever, they made me feel so welcome and were there for me whenever needed <33
Thankyou so much TMR

6 weeks with the turtles
I spent 6 weeks volunteering in Sri Lanka with the Mighty roar and I had the best trip I choose to do the turtle conservation program and enjoyed every minute of it. Most nights we got to release baby turtles into the ocean, during the day we got to help educate the locals about keeping beaches clean while also doing daily beach cleans , we also had to help clean and remove old turtles nest which is a key part of keeping the hatchery clean . As well as this the turtle program leader Tharu was amazing she made me feel so comfortable far away from home and she also helped to educate me on all things turtles she was accommodating to everyone's needs and always a friendly face to see. If you're thinking about volunteering abroad I would 100% recommend this programme.
