Our daughter has moderate learning difficulties and she was struggling greatly with both the English Lang and Literature GCSEs.

Laurence was recommended by a friend whose own child had improved greatly through his guidance and encouragement.

Our experience with him was outstanding. Over the course of 18 months we noticed an amazing improvement in our daughter's ability as her test results rose steadily at school.

Her August 2023 GCSE results were 6 (Lang) and 5 (Lit), which might not sound amazing but bear in mind that she had improved from a 2 or 3 in an incredibly short time.

Laurence's method is unconventional; you'll spend two hours or so completing a task and he'll dip in and out with help, advice and, best of all, encouragement.

Our daughter responded really well to this and, beyond his general didactic skills, he was able to instill in her a practical methodology that addresses precisely the points that examiners are actually looking for.

I'd like to thank him for his help, encouragement and for boosting our child's confidence so much. She is so proud of her writing now.

Laurence was an absolute god send. He uses techniques and coaching to enable students like Alex to independently produce brilliant answers to exam questions and tailors his teaching to ensure it is exactly what is needed for the papers.
Alongside this, his style was so so positive..knowing how to relate to our son..bringing out his confidence and promoting independence to fully answer exam questions and avoid the dreaded “writers block”.

I contacted Laurence very late in the day to help my son with his GCSE English Language and Literature. Laurence's detailed and efficient teaching methods helped me to get 9s in language and literature and boosted my confidence. Before I started lessons with him I thought that despite enjoying english i'd have to settle for grades 6/7 because of being dyslexic (especially in english language where I was predicted a 5), but the detailed and consistent feeback I was given each lesson helped me to clearly understand exactly what I needed to do to improve my writing. Laurence always made sure to check I fully understood the work and answered any questions I had in detail which meant I finished every lesson feeling really confident about the exams. I'm delighted to have gotten the grades I wanted in English thanks to Laurence's help and it's so great to now be confident about going into A level English literature after once finding english really overhwleming. Can't recommend enough!

Laurence did a great job guiding our son towards his GCSEs. His lessons helped build his confidence in both literature and language and really made a difference. My son got 2 sixes in his exams and we are delighted.

The tutoring is quite intense and I would say the student needs to be committed to make this work, but my son fully engaged and I saw his confidence increase from the first session.

Thanks to Laurence my son got a respectable pass in his English Language and has secured his place at college. More than that, his enthusiasm and desire to learn has flourished.

Laurence worked with my daughter for 5 months leading up to her end of her Yr 10 exams and she said the writing practise she did and feedback she received really made a difference in helping her with her writing. She gained skills and confidence in the English Language component in particular (which was the part she was most worried about) and she did better than expected in the exam (a grade 8 instead of the predicted 7).
I would especially recommend Laurence if you have a bright child who overthinks and freezes when it comes to putting pen to paper!

I sought help for my son who seemed to struggle with the technique of constructing his answers to the point. This effected his grades across all writen subjects.
Laurence has not only trained my son in this skill but also helped him in all aspects of exploring his ideas and opinions in a more structued way. I have seen my son grow in confidence and more importantly happy and motivated.
Laurence not only addressed my son's weak points on the subjects but very professionally got the best out of my rather introvert son, normally anxious around people.

Laurence has done a fantastic job getting my son ready for his English Language and Literature GCSEs. My son excels in sciences and maths, but has struggled with the way that English is taught at his school. My son has had a really positive experience with Laurence. His confidence has grown over the last 7 months and his anxiety around English has diminished. My son been a scientist always struggled with the interpretation skills needed in English. Having Laurence as his tutor gave him the skills and confidence to navigate this area of uncertainty and together they created an A / 9 grade student. Laurence managed to simplify and make patterns in very complicated texts and took the overwhelm of studying English away into a subject my son really enjoyed. The interpretation skills he learned he carried forward in other subjects (especially geography and RE) and he too attained 9’s in these subjects. Above all Laurence was patient, thorough and instilled a confidence in my boy where other teachers had failed.

I asked my daughter to describe Laurence for the title of this review and I think she summed him up perfectly. She has always been much stronger with Maths and Science and at the beginning of Year 11 had lost her confidence with English, this was reflected in a drop in her predicted grades. I am so glad that my friend told me about Laurence, my daughter was very happy at the end of her trial lesson and was extremely keen to continue. Her confidence has increased and so have her grades, she really enjoys her lessons and has found them so helpful. We would thoroughly recommend Laurence if you are considering an English tutor.

My son has always struggled with English and I am so so happy I came across Laurence. My son has only been having lessons for a couple of months with Laurence and already we are seeing the impact. A series of unfortunate events in our son's school involving an ever changing set of English teachers and very little continuity made us look for external tutoring in English.
