I attended the Royal Free with my…nephew and friend
I attended the Royal Free with my nephew on the Monday and a dear friend on the Wednesday. Both having biopsies. The nurses, auxiliary, porters etc were amazing, everyone said hello, smiled and checked we were all ok. The PITU and the IRCU Teams were outstanding I couldn’t fault the treatment or experience. With all the pressure our NHS are under the staff went above and beyond. So I would just like to say a great big thank you for looking after my loved ones.
Very happy with them
My experience with this hospital and…
My experience with this hospital and some of the staff has been extremely disappointing. The staff came across as rude, unfriendly, and lacking basic people skills.
After waiting approximately eight hours to be seen in A&E, I then spent another 24 hours in the A&E unit waiting to be given a bed. After such a long wait, I was eventually given a bed, only to then be told that it was on a female-only ward and that my husband would not be allowed to stay overnight.
My husband had been taking care of me throughout my time in hospital and has been an important advocate for me, particularly when communicating with staff and helping me understand what was happening with my care. Having him there was extremely important to me. Had we been told before being given the bed that he would not be allowed to stay overnight, we would have had the opportunity to make an informed decision about whether to accept that bed. Instead, this information was only given to us after I had already spent a further 24 hours waiting in A&E. After such an exhausting wait, this felt extremely inconsiderate and frustrating.
Medical terminology was often used without properly explaining what it meant. When I asked for things to be explained in simple, understandable terms, or asked why certain things were being done as part of my care, I felt as though my questions were treated as an inconvenience rather than being taken seriously.
I also had concerns regarding hygiene and basic infection-control practices. On one occasion, I questioned why a member of staff did not wash their hands before handling me after having just been with another patient. When taking my temperature, I also noticed the plastic part of the thermometer being touched directly with their hands rather than gloves being used. As a patient, I believe it is completely reasonable to question hygiene practices, particularly in a hospital environment where infection control should be taken seriously.
The general lack of consideration was also very disappointing. I have had nurses in A&E literally shake me awake from sleep simply because they wanted to take my observations, without any consideration for how this was done or whether I was resting. There seemed to be very little awareness of basic courtesy or patient comfort.
What was particularly concerning was the change in attitude and level of care after I questioned or challenged things. Their reactions made me feel as though asking questions negatively affected how I was treated moving forward.
Good communication, compassion, hygiene, respect, and consideration are incredibly important when someone is receiving medical care. Patients should feel comfortable asking questions about their own care without being made to feel judged, dismissed, or like a nuisance. Family members or carers who are supporting and advocating for patients should also be treated with consideration and kept informed where appropriate.
Unfortunately, that was not my experience here. I left feeling extremely disappointed by the attitude of some of the staff, the communication, and the overall standard of care and consideration shown towards me. I sincerely hope the hospital takes feedback like this seriously and looks at how staff communicate with, listen to, and treat patients.
I spent 31 minutes on the phone
I spent 31 minutes on the phone, only to finally get through and be asked for my NHS number twice. The man had to be advised that saying please, rather than "give me the number again" would be helpful.
I went to explain, the letter, given how vaguely it was worded, seeking clarity and I was cut off immediately.
Waste of time, money and my phone bill.Terrible service
Having an operation at Royal Free .
I was in 12th Floor Ward 12 South
The care was exemplary. They took great care . I would be happy to be admitted there any time
Really surprised at how I’m being…
Really surprised at how I’m being treated as an altruistic kidney donor. It’s like they don’t want it. Ranges from being ignored over months about basic questions to be given 1hr appointment on a Friday afternoon (via letter) and it is actually 2hrs (was always officially 2hrs but they stated 1hr in the appointment letter) which completely messed up travel arrangements. If you’re waiting for a kidney, then they are actively putting people off donating, unless this is some sort of test to see if you REALLY, REALLY want to donate, because they’ll make you work for it.
I had a good experience needing the…
I had a good experience needing the help of emergency doctors. All the staff was very kind, the surgeon who provided me with specialized help showed a lot of patience and professionalism. You are a successful team.
I thought I would try the Royal Free…
I thought I would try the Royal Free Hosptial Private Service, yes the one where you pay usually thousands for health care, if you call first thing in the morning, it takes a whole day to get an estimate cost back from them, and this is private section. So if you are enquiring about a private quote expect to wait a whole day.
Poor
Poor. Not so much the staff/care, when there, but communication afterwards/external. On being anxious about a stated wait time for cataract surgery/appointment FOR the surgery, as I'd had no confirmation of the surgery date, I tried ringing countless extensions and different phone numbers to the Opthalmology department. No-one picked up the phone, they requested "leave a message and we call you back". No-one did. And, when acquiring their email from their website, it FAILED each time as an unresponsive/incorrect email! Unwell enough as I am, I have to literally go down there to see if I can get any answers. I know they are stretched...but this is terrible!
I cannot recommend the Royal Free…
I cannot recommend the Royal Free Hospital. where I lay awake for three days and three nights due to the hospital not having any a free bed on a ward or so I was told.
The ambulance men were extremely kind but everything went downhill after they left.Their supervisor rang me and informed me the back pain was due to s slipped disc which are excruciatingly painful.
She had seen a dark patch on my X-ray that was similar to a slipped disc.
I was left to my own devises on a very uncomfortable stretcher in the corridor for 8 hours and taken to the A&E hours after that.
Apart from the one of two kind Indian nurses I have to say I was treated with contempt and harassment during my stay mainly from a very cruel young doctor on a mission to keep all patients awake each night as he shouted and laughed with a group of nurses doing his best to disturb and and did his very best to keep the patients in pain awake all night.
After three sleepless days and nights I checked myself out.
Each night the patients in A&E were prevented from sleeping due to not only the very bright lights which shone like daylight in the A&E wards but also the shouting and laughing with a young doctor who was focusing on not letting any patient sleep.
He shouted and created chaos with a group of nurses throughout the night and even worse was allowed to do so.
Patients were treated with contempt. This man should not be a doctor.
I have worked throughout my life and I despair to think this is the level our NHS has descended into this mayhem when a doctor does his best to disturb and disrupt patients in A&E all night.
A woman in the next bed cried throughout the night. She had been plied with morphine to ease the pain she was suffering from previous appalling treatment.
After three days I had had enough and checked out. They tried to stop me from leaving saying it 'wasn't safe' I finally called a family member who arrived to collect me.
Avoid the Royal Free staff in general the do not not care about patients and you could be stuck in the A&E for days on end being deliberately kept awake by a malicious young doctor and some nurses.
I wouldn’t send a dog to A&E or ATA
I wouldn’t send a dog to A&E or ATA.
Better still, If I needed an ambulance, I would ask them to take me to the Royal Veterinary Hospital in Kings Cross, better treatment.
This place really needs a root and branch sort out.
Title : One of the absolute best experiences I have ever had in any hospital
Title: One of the absolute best experiences I have ever had in any hospital///((This review is specifically for Barnet Royal Free Hospital Emergency Department.)
I am 43 years old, originally from Albania and Greece, and over my lifetime — plus having had my two children born here in the UK — I have spent a huge amount of time in hospitals and experienced care in many different places. Sadly, I have had some very bad experiences in the past, so I always feel anxious when I have to visit. But my experience at this Emergency Department was truly amazing, and completely changed how I felt.
From the moment I arrived, the reception team were wonderful — so respectful, warm, smiling, and they finished everything I needed in just two minutes. I waited about two hours, but I understood completely — it was very busy, there were lots of emergencies, and I knew I was in good hands.
The nurse who examined me was incredible: kind, careful, gentle, and constantly cheering me up, telling me “don’t worry, everything will be alright”. Then I saw two doctors who assessed me — I am sorry I cannot recall their names, or the names of any of the staff who helped me that night, but I want them all to know how grateful I am. They were so thoughtful, explained clearly that I needed surgery, and since it was late, arranged for me to come back Sunday morning. They even said honestly, “you might feel pain, it will hurt a little, but don’t worry — everything will go perfectly” — that honesty and care meant the world to me.
On Sunday morning, the surgeon and her assistant who performed the procedure were one million percent excellent. Again, I don’t remember their names, but they were kind, skilled, gentle, and made sure I felt safe and comfortable the whole time. The whole process went smoothly, the result was perfect, and I couldn’t have asked for better care.
After so many years of difficult or poor experiences elsewhere, this was easily one of the best, most caring experiences I have ever had. Even though I cannot remember anyone’s names, every single person I met — from reception, to nurses, to doctors, to the team on Sunday — was absolutely brilliant. This team deserves every bit of praise and more. Thank you for treating me like a person, not just a patient — you really made a hard time so much easier.
MINUS 10
MINUS 10
this bunch couldn't look after a patient if they tried.
Messed about for 3 years and still no action.
Was coughing blood
Was coughing blood, waited 3 and a half hours to be seen, by an awful male Dr with a turban. Seemed bad-tempered and as he approached me said 'Go home'
I said can he take a quick look, which he did for about 3 seconds, without a torch or anything.
6 months later having cancer tests. He should retake his doctors vows. Disgraceful really
Urgent: Immediate Review Required for Critical Colorectal Case
I am writing this letter with a broken heart from the NHS so that the people of the United Kingdom know what is really happening, and that no one is defending me.
To the relevant department,
With respect,
I am writing this letter to raise serious concern regarding the prolonged delay in the management of my colorectal condition and to urgently request an expedited review of my case. I am writing this letter with profound distress and disbelief regarding the handling of my case. I am truly shocked and deeply saddened that in a developed country such as the United Kingdom, particularly in its capital London, the NHS allows patients with severe, chronic, and complex medical conditions to wait for such long periods.
I come from a fully medical family from one of the best countries in the world, with pride and honor from Iran, and I am fully aware of hospital processes, regulations, and the demanding workloads of your respected staff. I greatly appreciate their efforts. Nevertheless, I am utterly astonished and dismayed that despite multiple serious and long-standing medical problems, I am still expected to wait for a routine surgical appointment.
My medical history over the past several years includes severe chronic and worsening conditions that remain inadequately diagnosed or managed. The NHS has been unable to provide effective nutrition, probiotics, vitamins, or treatment. These include: chronic IBS, recurrent rectal bleeding, fissures, hemorrhoids with stool tests showing blood up to 200, iron-deficiency anemia, severe constipation, chronic gastritis, multiple small kidney stones (2–3 mm), liver cysts, a benign antral submucosal lesion resembling pancreatic tissue, and long-term pancreatic and biliary issues. Despite multiple medications and interventions, my symptoms continue to worsen. Must I reach the most severe stage before these conditions are treated? I have bowel movements only twice a week, and I experience severe psychological fear for the future due to the slow NHS response and the progressive worsening of my stomach, pancreas, and liver cysts.
I am astonished that after years of suffering, I am still on a waiting list with no fixed date for surgery. Is over two years of waiting not enough? Must I reach a life-threatening stage to be prioritized? From day one, I personally requested surgery, but the NHS initially refused. Now, after several years, you are responding to my initial request. I have endured these problems in silence, but you expect me to continue suffering severe rectal bleeding and chronic abdominal pain while waiting in a long queue. This prolonged delay is medically unacceptable and psychologically devastating.
This situation has completely overwhelmed my nervous system. Past traumas, especially those from the Iran-Iraq war coinciding with my birth, have resurfaced with full intensity. Beyond anxiety, a sense of emptiness and paralysis has taken over me. My mind is consumed by uncontrollable thoughts about the “whys” of existence and absolute meaninglessness. I feel completely detached from the present, trapped between a ruined past and a bleak future.
The constant ticking and noise in my ears feels like a countdown to an explosion. Auditory flashbacks of bombings from my childhood are vividly present, erasing the boundary between reality and memory. Any loud sound shocks my body. I wake up terrified at night, and even watching TV or normal images causes extreme psychological stress. This pressure is continuous 24/7, preventing me from performing even the smallest tasks. I feel my spirit disintegrating and trapped in an absolute psychological dead-end.
With utmost respect, I urgently request immediate prioritization and intervention. The severity of my physical and psychological condition can no longer be deferred to routine scheduling. Every day that passes exacerbates my suffering. I sincerely ask you to acknowledge the seriousness of my situation and provide timely and appropriate care.
I have been struggling with multiple hemorrhoid problems for several years, yet for each minor procedure, they place me on the waiting list for several months. I have repeatedly protested, and even my GP has told them this could be dangerous in the future. However, this system from 1947 remains outdated. They do not even read emails, constantly claim they are too busy, and I have observed repeated mistakes in appointment scheduling and many other issues.
I have sent them photos of my bleeding, yet they remain completely indifferent, as if a doctor must personally tell them that I will die next year for them to even attempt to save my life.
With respect,
Time wasters
The nurse doing the blood tests is alright, it use to be after the blood test straight to see the doctor to reschedule.
Now is one que for the blood test and another for the doctor which take ages.
I'm spending £10-£15 just for parking to wait for the doctor.
Really inefficient clinic.
A&E doctors see 2 patients PER HOUR
A&E doctors see 2 patients PER HOUR.
I bet they employed people with sadistic habits to provide slowest care )
To be avoided
This hospital is terrible and the sense…
This hospital is terrible and the sense of responsibility is non existent. When we go to hospital it’s for personal things and I was humiliated and degraded, denied essential treatment and when I made a complaint they refused to consider my complaint AND THEN I WAS THREATENED BY HEAD OF SECURITY PAUL PHILIPS FOR MAKING THE COMPLAINT!!!!
One star
One star
The problem with this hospital is once you get to the patient wards, I've had the pleasure of being on them 3 times, the complete lack of care or organisation is beyond belief, if you cant speak up for yourself or have someone that can on your behalf it won't be looking good for you
Barnet general is consistently poor
Barnet general is consistently poor. Haven’t been here in a long time and no improvements sadly. Waits in A&E are insane. Lots of nurses standing around doing very little. No sign of any doctors. Go elsewhere if you can. Toilets no soap, water dispenser empty
