I am outraged at the way that my brother and I have been treated by this firm. In February 2024, the firm contacted us following a merger.They had discovered money owing us from our late Mother who died 25 yrs ago.After prolonged correspondence with HMRC ,we were eventually told that the money could be released in NOVEMBER 2025.The interest on this 25 yr old account was neglible. It had not been put in a higher interest account !( A request for some kind of goodwill compensation was ignored). What has been particularly unacceptable, however, is the firm’s lack of communication during these past 2 years.Emails and phone calls unanswered. We were informed in November2025 that the money could be released, only to be told it was being passed to a “ private client” dept.,We were not given a contact name. Left in limbo.
We should not have had to repeatedly chase a firm for information about money which was due to us from 25 years ago.
We would not recommend this firm to anyone who expects their correspondence to be answered, taken seriously and their matter to be properly managed.

I would like to recommend this company particularly Toni who is the paralegal, such a kind and helpful lady. Nothing too much for her.

As first-time buyers, we relied heavily on the advice and guidance provided throughout the process. The estate agent recommended Boys & Maughan, and we trusted that we would be kept informed and supported. Unfortunately, this was not our experience. Communication was the biggest issue for us. We frequently struggled to obtain clear updates and often felt left in the dark regarding the progress of our case. In fact, it appeared that the solicitor was not aware that our mortgage application had been declined until I contacted her regarding the fees being charged. This raised serious concerns for us about the level of communication and oversight throughout the transaction. The purchase did not proceed because our mortgage application was declined. While I understand that solicitors charge for work undertaken, it was disappointing to receive a bill of £594 for a transaction that never completed, particularly when we felt that communication and support had been lacking from the outset. What I found most frustrating was the handling of the repayment arrangement. After receiving the bill, I explained my financial circumstances and was asked what I could realistically afford to pay. I clearly stated that £50 per month was the maximum I could manage. However, rather than considering my proposal, I was informed that the balance would need to be paid in three instalments, with the first payment due by the end of the month. Despite my efforts to explain my situation, I did not feel that my concerns or repayment offer were properly taken into account. Based on my experience, I would encourage first-time buyers to carefully research all available options before choosing a solicitor and to consider firms that offer a genuine "no move, no fee" service for greater peace of mind if a purchase falls through. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend Boys & Maughan based on my personal experience. This review reflects my honest experience as a client.

Had the easiest clients — first-time buyers, no chain, and a high-street lender — yet somehow it still took roughly nine months to reach completion. I ended up having to chase documents on their behalf, and there were constant mistakes and miscommunication throughout. They would call us by the wrong name and even CC us into emails that weren’t intended for us. It was incredibly unprofessional.
They eventually discounted our bill by £200 because of the number of errors, which says a lot. Buying a property is stressful enough without your conveyancer making the process ten times worse. Honestly, I would think twice before using Boys & Maughan.

Husbands solicitor,(i cant afford one) i accepted a financial settlement with the promise that all money will be in my account by 31 march, that date and solicitor have now gone, go to court on 4th june judge isnt happy that the pension sharing hasnt been sorted but agrees that the cash lump sum can be paid, Greg his solicitor refuses, back in court on 23 july and Greg from Boys and Maughan has done a wonderful job of sorting out the pension order and then sent the judge copies of all the paperwork, unfortunatly Greg sends all the unsigned copies. So here we are nearly 4 months after i should have recieved the cash part of the settlement as agreed still no money, no answer from Greg as to whether it will ever be sorted!!! Totally fuming at how incompetent they are but am glad my lying, cheating ex is paying their bill.
Cracked a tooth on Sunday, managed to get an emergancy dentist appointment for tuesday, emailed ex hubby and Greg both Monday and Tuesday no response and no money, had to cancel appointment and remain in agony. Disgraceful service, please avoid at all cost
Todays update, pension firm are demanding i remove my part of pension share from his account and where is Greg off for a while!!! Stand in person no help at all, ex hubby being silent.
Still no response, diabetic unable to eat for nearly 5 days, terrible

Thank you Boys and Maughan for your response, however i am distressed at the incompetance of your firm!!!! Are you going to pay interest on the payment you promised by 31st March? Of course not, you just carry on making more lies and mistakes conning more money out of my ex (which i dont mind), you are a bunch of lying thieves

Poor performance from your conveyancing department.
With awful communication from the conveyancing department and up to two weeks for a simple response via email this is unacceptable.
I was extremely disappointed with the overall service that I received, considering that I have used your company before and found you to be very good.
I felt that I was doing your job by answering all the buyers questions when your department could have easily accomplished this.
As a result even when the sale failed to complete you had no idea as to what was happening which shows you where not communicating with the estate agent.

As part of my work I have to deal with a number of local law firms around Canterbury usually not selected by me but managing a deal that I have to get involved in. In my experience, Boys and Maughan are one of the least easy to deal with and can be challenging. A recent transaction merely confirmed my opinion. There are better law firms in East Kent.

Pleasant and prompt communication, nicely drafted agreement. However, the contract that was drafted could not be honoured even though obvious to a solicitor. Transactional mentality that leads to tunnel vision and thus inadequate advice. Sadly with a not-my-problem attitude.

I used the Margate office for a Litigation situation. My case was dealt with by a Senior Solicitor named Joana Daraskeviciute. I had heard very bad stories about Boys & Maughan but I have to tell you Joana went above and beyond to assist me. I cannot fault her work and general communication. She made sure I understood everything clearly and I did not feel rushed or stressed once I spoke with her. I know Solicitors cost a fortune but with Joana dealing with my case, it was worth it. Thank you so much Joana. Also her secretary was very efficient and accommodating. Lucy Brown I think her name was.

We recently used Boys & Maughan Solicitors for our property purchase and were assisted by Maddison and Averil. They were both incredibly attentive, helpful, and professional throughout the process. Communication was excellent — we always felt informed and supported every step of the way. Thanks to their efficiency and dedication, we achieved completion in just 9 weeks from the offer date, which is amazing! We’re so grateful for their hard work and would highly recommend Maddison at Boys and Maughan Margate branch to anyone looking for a smooth and stress-free experience.

Absolutely abysmal.

Wasted 6 months of our lives and thousands of pounds.

This company was both the seller’s conveyancer and attorney/executor.

What was meant to be a quick sale dragged on so long that the owner of the property died.

The sale could have been wrapped up months before this if the conveyancer had been remotely competent. They took 9 weeks to order a management pack that could have been sorted on day 1. Not to mention various other delays where they simply didn’t reply to emails.

During this time we were homeless and even after the death of the owner there was no urgency in any of their actions. Over a month had passed and probate hadn’t even been requested.

Please avoid this company if you want anything done in a reasonable timeframe and be very careful if they are representing the other party in a property sale.

No, we were not your client. I’d love to know how it benefited anyone to take 9 WEEKS to order the management pack? I can’t possibly imagine your client (who is an attorney at the same firm) suggested you don’t do that. You are correct to say that you “didn’t act for the reviewer”. You didn’t act and that was the problem. I think a team of sloths may have acted quicker.

Your utter negligence and incompetence cost us thousands of pounds, has left us homeless and wasted 6 months of our lives.

I used this company for a land purchase. They quoted me around £5,000 plus VAT. I knew this was expensive but I had been waiting a year for the sale to go through and I thought they were a trusted and respected family run company i had used about ten years ago, so I agreed.

Fast forward to the final bill months later of nearly £10,500. They billed me for compeltely unnecessary checks such as gas safety certificates on land with no flexed structurd on it. I paid it out of desperation to get the sale done. I have since complained to them about how my bill doubled and they just ignore me.

Terrible company and I would never used them again. Please get a fixed price if you do!

I am in the process with Boys and Maughan for buying my first flat. It has been three months (!) since I asked my initial basic questions in response to some of the forms from the seller. I have emailed chasing about 10 times now, and they have replied once. Every single time I ring (6 or 7 times) I am told their lines are busy and they will ring me back. They have never rung me back. If changing solicitors was an option, I would do that. Really really dissappointed with the non-existent level of service I have been given, especially since it's my first time buying a property and I was really hoping for a level of support.
Avoid them at all costs!

We had a great experience with Boys & Maughan (Canterbury), they were very helpful and prompt. It felt like we were in good hands and everything was dealt with without any fuss. Graham was very efficient and handled our case well especially as it was a very quick turnaround.

These should be called Boys and YAWN.
Do not use these people.
I have been waiting nearly 5 months to sell my home. This company is acting for my buyer.
I have never known anything like it.
I have been ready to complete for 6 weeks and all we get from this lot is 'we'll get back ASAP'.
Well, I'm now in an impossible financial situation and looking to withdraw from the sale due to their lack of interest and urgency.
Use a conveyancing solicitor who is actually looking to help you, not one with such a 'can't be bothered ' attitude.

I had an issue with a commercial deposit the Margate office, I gave pictorial evidence, text messages and emails proving the landlord was a con man yet the advice at £2500 "lets negotiate".

Would never use again or recommend to anyone!

Excellent service once again from Elliott and Toni when selling my parent's house recently. I chose them based on a similar experience we had two years ago when buying my own house. They are very responsive on email, professional throughout, and the price we paid was exactly as quoted. Thanks once again.

Boys and Maughan Ramsgate recently handled the sale of our late mother's property. They were absolutely great. Emails and phone calls replied to in hours rather than days, friendly and helpful staff, great attention to detail, and patience when we bombarded them with questions. Highly recommended, and I will definitely be using them the next time I need a solicitor.

I was very satisfied with the service from Danielle at the Margate Office who undertook the conveyancing for the sale of my property and purchase of another. Her communication was quick and efficient throughout the process which took 15 weeks and led to completion on 9th January 2025. I felt totally confident and supported during a stresful time & it was a lovely to meet Danielle briefly at the office.

Do not trust there estimates on work they double them once work completed every time I asked roughly how much she would say oh about 500 example then turn out a 1000 . Everything from calls and down to every second they charge. No understanding no empathy and out to break your bank balance. Even the hourly charge changed half way through and final invoice charged at the later rate even tho most work done was before increase. After court not a care in the world how I was because a two minute call would had cost the world . I would never use again. Feel my mental health issues were there gain to charge me every penny I had . I’m penny broke to the point I can’t even put food on the table . Won’t recommend this company to anyone and glad to see the back of them. Never use
