I booked a Lake Como package through Wowcher, with Travelolo arranging the holiday. What should have been exciting has turned into one of the most stressful booking experiences I have ever had.

After redeeming the vouchers, Travelolo contacted me to arrange the flights and hotel. I paid an additional £258 directly to Travelolo for more suitable Ryanair flight times because the original options were extremely inconvenient.

Travelolo then sent me a formal holiday confirmation clearly naming Hotel Engadina in Como, including the exact address, dates, room type and bed-and-breakfast basis. I agreed to the package on that basis.

Very shortly afterwards, I was told Hotel Engadina was no longer available.

This is where the story became confusing. Over the phone, I was told the hotel was unavailable because it was undergoing construction/reconstruction. However, written communication later suggested Travelolo was still waiting for room confirmation. These are completely different explanations.

I was then offered numerous alternatives, including hotels outside central Como, hotels in Milan, out-of-town business-style hotels and even a hotel on Lake Garda, which is a completely different destination.

During another call, I was told that one of the alternatives was actually the hotel originally advertised in the package. When I checked and found a different address, I was told this was because the hotel had “changed its name”.

At this point, I could no longer establish clearly what hotel had originally been advertised, what had actually been booked, why Hotel Engadina was unavailable, or why I was receiving different explanations.

I specifically asked Travelolo to confirm in writing that the proposed replacement was genuinely like-for-like with Hotel Engadina. That request was ignored.

I then formally requested a full refund because the confirmed hotel was no longer available, I had not requested any change and I had not accepted any replacement accommodation.

Instead of directly addressing my refund request in writing, Travelolo continued trying to arrange phone calls and discuss further alternatives. I repeatedly asked for all communication to be kept in writing so I could maintain an accurate record.

I also discovered that I had never received an ATOL Certificate, despite the deal being advertised as an ATOL-protected package holiday and despite receiving a combined confirmation containing flights and accommodation.

There is also a separate concern about how my £258 card payment was taken. Immediately before I verbally provided my card details, I heard an automated announcement indicating that recording was starting. I then gave my card number, expiry date and security code. I am not claiming the details were definitely retained, but I have asked Travelolo to explain whether they were captured, masked, paused or removed from the recording.

At the time of writing, I still do not have clear written answers to basic questions:

Why exactly is Hotel Engadina unavailable?
Was it ever properly secured before confirmation?
Why was I given different explanations?
Which hotel supposedly “changed its name”?
Why was my request for written like-for-like confirmation ignored?
Where is my ATOL Certificate?
Will my full refund request, including the extra £258, be honoured?
Were my spoken card details captured or retained?

This is no longer simply about preferring one hotel over another. It is about inconsistent information, unanswered questions, a confirmed hotel becoming unavailable, unclear replacement arrangements and difficulty obtaining straightforward written answers.

I would strongly advise anyone booking through Travelolo to save every email, screenshot every confirmation, insist on written communication and check all ATOL documentation carefully.

I will update this review if Travelolo provides a clear written explanation and resolves my refund request fairly.

My partner and I purchased a 3 night/4 day break to Lake Como via Wowcher. The initial flights given to us weren’t in line with t&cs as we were only in the country for 55hrs when the minimum time as per t&cs is 60hrs. I explained I’m a cancer patient with a disability and that unsociable flight times prevent me from accessing public transport and necessary facilities. Despite this Travelolo insisted I booked a flight that would not arrive into Italy until after 10pm. If I wanted any other option I’d have to pay. They requested proof of my disability so I provided an email with evidence of my blue badge and I also informed them of my 14 day change of my legal right and as we are within that period I wish to exercise that right and cancel the holiday. They referred me to Wowcher - wowcher referred me back to them as the contract is essentially between me and the merchant - something they’re very aware of. I’m contacting media outlets today about this scam, Watchdog as well as FCA, ASA and I will be raising a formal complaint. They have the ability to issue a full refund and are continuing to go around in circles to avoid doing this. This is draining and extremely stressful, particularly as I am a cancer patient.

Nick, was lovely and even tho I had asked him some questions over and over he was completely fine with explaining it again for me.
