We specialise in creating detailed, free and independent online travel guides for New Zealand and the South Pacific Islands. Our guides are built on real, on-the-ground research, government partnerships and strong industry connections, giving travellers reliable, practical and easy-to-use advice at their fingertips. Unlike generic and AI travel websites, our content is created by real travel writers who regularly visit the destinations we cover. Each year, we spend 10+ months in the islands researching accommodation, activities, transport, food, culture, local services and travel logistics first-hand. We liaise directly with tourism boards, government departments, local operators and communities to keep our information accurate, useful and up to date. We also create the vast majority of our own media. More than 95% of the photos and videos used across our guides are taken by our team during our travels, with minimal editing, so travellers can see places as they really are. From checking ferry schedules and domestic flight options to visiting small guesthouses, trying local tours and researching everyday travel costs, our goal is to make planning a trip easier, clearer and more honest. Our guides help travellers discover New Zealand, Fiji, the Cook Islands, Samoa, Vanuatu, Tonga, Niue, American Samoa, the Marshall Islands, Wallis and Futuna, and more across the South Pacific. ----- Check out our guides: New Zealand: nzpocketguide.com Fiji: fijipocketguide.com Cook Islands: cookislandspocketguide.com Samoa: samoapocketguide.com Vanuatu: vanuatupocketguide.com Tonga: tongapocketguide.com Niue: niuepocketguide.com American Samoa: americansamoapocketguide.com Marshall Islands: marshallislandspocketguide.com Wallis and Futuna: wallisandfutunapocketguide.com ----- Have our guides helped you plan your travels? Great expérience with NZ Pocket Guide
Samoa & Fiji Pocket Guides - inexhaustible treasure chests overflowing with information, inspiration and clues
First, thanks a million - again and again - to Rob & Laura for their stunning work!! You really made my journey to the (literal) antipodes of the world ..., at least as seen from my den in good old Germany ;-))
As a somewhat experienced world traveler with 120+ countries visited in almost 4 decades - be it work-related or even more inspiring in times of leisure -, with a clear preference for destinations off the beaten track, less known or somewhat cumbersome to visit (like e.g. Greenland, Bhutan or the DPRK – North Korea) and fascinated by contacts to foreign peoples, rites and cultures as close as possible, I reached out last autumn to finally visit Samoa for 6 weeks combined with 3 more weeks in Fiji.
In sound preparation for this new adventure, I was simply super happy to have stumbled over Rob & Laura’s amazing pocket guides by luck! Finally, reliable sources of extensive and plentiful in-depth information, inspirations as well as clues on these destinations that have been super-neatly researched unpretentious of travel styles, focuses or personal preferences and all that even kept well up-dated. When I had small remaining specific questions in particular on cultural aspects, Rob stepped far out of his way to answer them gladly in person, to his best knowledge, super friendly and with good sense of humor. Awesome! Finally and as a neat proof of quality, their pocket guides also turned out to be super reliable travel companions on the spot. They did not let me down even for a single second in 9 weeks!
In a nutshell, I couldn't recommend Rob and Laura/Samoa and Fiji Pocket Guides enough!
Fa'afetai tele lava, Vinaka vakalevu and Cheers mates!!!
The best source of information for your New Zealand trip!
These guys have been publishing solid information for travelers to the South Pacific for a long time. My New Zealand trip was greatly enhanced by tips that are only available here. Using their content, it was easy to include family in the planning process. Thank you, South Pacific Pocket Guide!
Great tips and ideas for south pacific travel!
Do you want tips on the best places to stay, and the best places to go, in New Zealand and other south pacific countries? Look no further. We got the best tips and ideas for our trip to New Zealand from Robin and Laura. Our trip was filled to the brim of places to stay and things to do, and they helped us narrow things down so we could fit it all in. They even recommended things to do that we didn't know about. So worth checking out their websites, and asking them for help.
Oh and their YouTube channel has tons of helpful videos. Places to stay, things to do, how to hire (rent) a car, or use the bus system in New Zealand. Helped make our decisions even easier. We went twice to New Zealand and they helped with both trips, and we had the opportunity to grab coffee with them too. I will reach out to them again, if I ever make it out that way again (and I do hope to one day).
Do I trust NZ Pocket Guide's Rob and Laura?
Do I trust NZ Pocket Guide's Rob and Laura? You bet I do! This year will make 3 journeys through which I have followed their guidance and suggestions for where to go, when to go, and what to do on my NZ adventures. I started following them in 2020. Their websites for countries in the South Pacific are invaluable. I appreciated all that free information so much that I became an active member of their Patreon community In 2022. One of the perks of my membership was a personalized itinerary based on my interests and my NZ bucket list. I can't thank Rob and Laura enough. They come through every time and I have enjoyed my trips to New Zealand so much.
Can't recommend NZ Pocket Guide any higher
I can't say enough about Robin and Laura from NZ Pocket guide. I am one of those who loves to plan things out in detail. The family may say to much, but that's me.
When I started planning my last trip to New Zealand, I started searching the web to look at possible places to go, things to do and see and came across NZPocketguide.com. I found the information there very detailed and it covered all the details of things I was looking for such as places I wanted to see, what there was to do in those locations. Their site also provides other information such as information on car rentals and lists some travel/health insurance companies you might want to check out.
I'm glad I did as I'm one who feels better with insurance coverage, but all the companies I found in the US were way to expensive. I ended up going with one they listed as the price was right. Ends up I needed to use that policy and the company was quick to process the claims. I would have never found that company without NZPocketguide.com.
In addition to the website, Robin and Laura are great at answering questions and can provide more indepth help if you join their patron group, which I did.
Highly recommend their site for New Zealand trip planning and if I ever plan to go to other south pacific islands I'll check out their other sites as well.
A quintessential ressource for travel in South Pacific!
I relied on Rob and Laura’s NZ Pocket Guide articles quite a bit during my Working Holiday in New Zealand, and can’t recommend them enough! Additionally, the YouTube channel provides very helpful tips on how to best prepare for a trip to many South Pacific nations, and they are very reactive should one need further assistance.
I couldn't recommend Rob and…
I couldn't recommend Rob and Laura/NZPocket Guide enough! As someone born and bred in NZ, I’ve used their site countless times over the years and found it super helpful for planning adventures around the country with my family. Their knowledge of NZ is far more than I'll ever have, so I’ve shared their channel with many friends and family when they visit here.
Whether it's small towns like Milton or big cities like Wellington, great food from many restaurants to the Hobbiton banquet, down to great pies in Fairlie—and even Marmite.... they have opinions and recommendations for practically everything related.
Apart from the website, Rob and Laura are just choice people. They genuinely care about helping others with their travel plans and always have a great sense of humor and cheeky banter. Fantastic people, amazing channel, and a top-notch website! Keep up the great work!
A valuable planning companion for both New Zealand and Pacific Island adventures
The content on this site is hugely comprehensive, and has been extensively researched in person. It covers both New Zealand and various Pacific Island destinations like Fiji, Tonga, Nuie, Cook Islands, and Samoa.
I used it as a friendly and comprehensive planning companion for all my recent trips to New Zealand.
- Super easy to navigate and find what you're looking for
- Covers both New Zealand and Pacific Island destinations extensively
- Caters to all travel styles (not just luxury or just budget)
- Shows commitment to sustainable tourism and community development
- Nice mix of practical info and personal travel stories
- Clean, user-friendly design
Note: While the site offers detailed travel resources for both New Zealand and Pacific Island destinations, it's not officially affiliated with any tourism organizations. For the most up-to-date information like visa requirements, health guidelines, or travel advisories, you'll want to verify details through official government websites and tourism boards.
Bottom line: It's definitely worth bookmarking as part of your trip planning toolkit for both New Zealand and Pacific Island adventures. Use it for inspiration and general planning, but combine it with official sources for critical travel requirements. Think of it as your friendly travel companion rather than your legal advisor!
Awesome in depth resources for New Zealand Trip Planning
Traveling to New Zealand from the US (and most other faraway lands) is a bucket list trip and requires detailed planning to get the most out of your time in the country.
The team at southpacificpocketguide.com provide a plethora of amazing resources and they also make trip planning fun with the videos, online Q&A plus an opportunity to have one on one trip reviews with a very economical subscription to their Patreon group.
For our trip we started planning pre-covid and really loved the biggest gap year YouTube series to get a flavor of the activities from locals. The quantities of videos they have produced is amazing. I think we watched at least 30- 50 videos.
The southpacificpocketguide family of website includes comprehensive guides for all areas in the South Pacific with details for all the destinations within the countries they serve. The information really goes deep too, I don't think you would find that much information in a travel guide. We used the nzpocketguide for our itinerary both before and during our six week trip to NZ too.
We did have great luck with the accommodations and restaurants they recommended. They also provide ideas for a range of budgets and travel styles.
I would highly recommend using both the web pages along with the videos/live feed to get a feel for the team behind the company. They are very respectful of the unique variability of travel styles and don't ever seem to push anyone toward a given activity.
Robin also supported our trip when there was an issue with a boat tour operator. We also had a close call when there were road closures and Robin and Laura offered assistance if we needed to develop a Plan B to avoid the road closure, thankfully the road reopened and we enjoyed the west coast of the South Island
Along with planning the fun activities their resources for immigration, biosecurity and safety really prepared us for the unique logistics of entering NZ, which is much more stringent than other countries.
We're so glad we happened upon the nzpocketguide videos when we started planning.
