Customer service is appalling. When my son was having emergency surgery in a foreign country they just made everything so much more difficult. They never called back, never shared information and took days to make decisions on what could be covered. Since we returned we haven't even been able to contact them so are still out of pocket for our expenses and no way of getting that money back

They do not have a digital voice contact service in 2026!
They offer reverse charge phone calls that have to be connected through an operator. Operator service no longer exist in most countries.
This is, in my opinion, a deliberate ploy to prevent claims being allowed. There is lots of inforamtion you will need to make a claim and their claims portal is clunky and drip feeds the requirements.
Their claims portal does not walk you through your options clearly or provide much help so talking to a person is needed but deliberately made dificult to do.

Very sneaky! I purchased travel insurance with RAC and my flight was cancelled due to the flight provider having technical difficulties - while we received a refund from the airline on the original flight, there was $3,500 in additional costs that resulted as a consequence of the cancellation and it is listed deep in the T&Cs that they won't cover if the flight provider cancels, which I'd say is a fairly common occurrence in the journey of travel (especially in Europe), and something as a traveller you'd expect to be covered for. I've purchased travel insurance through RAC a couple of times and have never in my life made a claim, so I can say with confidence I'll never use them again! Very disappointing.

I took a holiday to Thailand last November and had a very bad accident resulting in 3 fractures on my pelvis, taken to Bankok hospital, they contacted RAC insurance who didn’t hesitate to approve anything that needed doing, X-ray scans MRI. I was repatriated home 2 weeks later, accompanied by a wonderful doctor and nurse.
I am so grateful to RAC insurance, they took a lot of stress away and were so helpful.

DO NOT USE RAC TRAVEL INSURANCE.
Once RAC have your money, and an incident takes place and you need help, they will NOT. They will simple pass the buck to Tokio Marine. Tokio Marine are hopeless and will demand document after document, after document..... full 2 years of medical history.....
I wish I read these reviews.
RAC want authority from my hospitalised son before they will speak to me. I asked for the authorisation form and I will take it to the hospital and get him to sign (despite being treated and heavily medicated) and RAC told me they can't send me the form because I'm not authorised and can only send it to my son.
UPDATED 16/2 - NO RAC.
TOKIO MARINE HAVE NOT BEEN IN CONTACT.

DREADFUL! I bought RAC Silver Essential Multi-trip insurance and submitted a claim on 17th September for travel expenses when taken ill on a trip to Albania. Originally, I was told to expect a reply within 21 days. I have chased and chased... nothing! It is now 3 months since I lodged the claim and still no response. I've also tried calling but get stuck in a queue. AVOID!

Absolutely disgraceful if you think you might get a family court matter don’t use tax travel insurance had to cancel my holiday due to it being a family matter they declined my claim and told me to suck up the loss refused to refund my money will be seeking court action have also filled a full complaint traveler beware!!!

I had a breakdown that damaged my wheel and my car needed to be towed. RAC refused to tow my car because the breakdown “caused damage” to my vehicle, which makes no sense, since every breakdown involves some form of damage visible or not.
On top of this, I am more than 1,000 km from my home. My policy clearly states that if my vehicle cannot be repaired within 24 hours, RAC will cover accommodation for up to 5 days. When I contacted them, they simply claimed my breakdown wasn’t “serious enough.” This condition does not appear anywhere in the policy — the wording only specifies that the car must be out of use for more than 24 hours.
As a result, I’ve been stranded, forced to pay for 10 days in a hotel out of my own pocket, while RAC refuses to take any responsibility.
This is by far the most useless roadside assistance insurance I have ever purchased. They do not honor their own policy, they shift the responsibility back to the customer, and they provide zero real support when you need it most.
I would give minus stars if this were possible. DON’T USE THIS TRAVEL INSURANCE. My husband suffered a stroke two months ago, shortly before our travel date and I am still awaiting settlement. It is virtually impossible to contact this company by phone but they have sent placatory emails thanking me for my patience!! The claim is straightforward and was accompanied by all the necessary documentation. I have today spent 40 minutes waiting on the phone because I was determined to speak to someone and have been told once again that my claim is being processed - the equivalent of ‘it’s in the post”. Incidentally my daughter who was on the same trip and insured by Barclays Bank had her claim settled and the money in her bank within three days. AVOID RAC INSURANCE LIKE THE PLAGUE.

If I could give 0 stars I would. Trying to claim back the money for my sister cruise she had to cancel due to be diagnosed with terminal cancer . Still not been paid out yet quick to take your money

I have applied for a International Licence again and was asked what the travel dates were as part of the application yet received it with a 12 mth expiry from date of application? Blatant ripoff! Why not ask the question would you like it to start from this date? So now I've paid for a 10mth licence instead of 12 mths. Why even bother asking the question when it suggests the 12mth issue would apply and be activated from travel date!?
Took ill in NZ claimed to get refund for cancellations and out of pocket expenses. Four months down the track kept coming back wanting more docs now they want a report from my Dr. With notes stating last two years history. Told them to close the claim, just email after email delaying and the wanting more. Never use them again worst experience ever
If I could give no stars I would. Daughter had to go to hospital in SAfrica with viral meningitis. Required urgent attention, test, treatment. I contacted RAC to let them know she was in hospital unwell, on the day of her admission. They emailed huge amount of paper work to her. Which she managed to work through with terrible headaches, hospital signed stamped, dr signed stamped, invoices and receipts, sent in. Had to pay upfront to hospital and drs. I had to send money to help pay. Waiting weeks from RAC for any info or refund, nothing after numerous call emails, finally someone said oh you have to send in proof of payment from your account WTF. She has sent receipts and paid invoices already. Now she waits again. I wonder what would have happened if we didn’t have enough money to pay costs, if I hadn’t contacted them on the first day and if she was unable to fill in the forms in hospital.

Delay, deny, defend.
What a joke. After paying good money in premiums for my last few international trips (not to mention decades of car insurance and membership), I finally made a claim against my RAC insurance, when I suffered a near 7 hour delay for an internal flight in the Philippines, resulting in having to book a new flight entirely to make it home from Manila.
You'd think that this might come under "delay" as promised by their completely misleading policy summary when you take out this cover but no, the fact that the airline caused my loss, means RAC does not want to know. Premiums AND flight expense down the drain. There go $1000.
They will not see any of my money again, including for my trips to Peru and Africa in the next two years, as well as my car insurance in future. Disgusting.
The worst travel insurance ever. Very slow to answer - don’t check facts and rude dismissive emails. I have been a loyal RAC customer for years, paying premiums and rarely making claims however when I tried to claim missed flights through no fault of my own I got every excuse under the sun. DO NOT USE
My experience with RAC Travel Insurance has been deeply disappointing. I purchased a policy for over $2,000, expecting reliable coverage. I submitted a claim for an amount significantly less than the policy cost in February 2024, due to a medical cancellation from a December 2023 trip. Despite providing all requested documentation, I have faced a year of delays and vague responses. The discrepancy between the high cost of the policy and the company's reluctance to pay out a smaller claim is unacceptable. I cannot recommend RAC Travel Insurance.
I submitted a claim on the 27/12/2024 and have not heard anything back, I have called multiple times requesting a call back and have updated the notes in the claim but haven’t received a response. DO NOT USE RAC. I will be taking this further.
Terrible Company to purchase Travel Insurance with I had a medical thing overseas and have had my claim in with them for months for a refund. Haven’t heard off them once I call them at least 3 times a week and get told I’ll get a call back but never do.
So unprofessional and disgusting from such a well known name/business. The call centre workers couldn’t care less when your on the phone to them and just interrupt you at every time you go to speak.
Took out travel insurance with rac because i have everything with them. Made a medical claim and at first they were helpful with the claim.
After a while I get a call from someone there and they said it was approved, waited about a month heard nothing then rang them and was told I have to re apply after I already sent everything to them.
I did that and followed up with it and was told someone will call me back from claims.
I get a call from someone saying it is in the que, how long is this que I wonder?
I asked why do I have to wait for someone from claims to call me back why can't I just talk to someone.
I kept getting told by him that he is just calling me to tell me my claim is in the que.
Disappointed with rac, will change insurance companies when this get finalised.
