Oak & Sprout is a UK maker and curator of heirloom wooden toys and Montessori puzzles designed for curious hands and calm homes. Hand-finished in the UK, our small-batch collections include wooden construction vehicles (excavator, crane), inset alphabet and number boards (0–9), and animal jigsaw puzzles—all crafted from solid hardwoods such as Walnut, Padauk, Maple, Zebrano, and Tigerwood (natural colour; no paint or plastic). Every piece is CE & UKCA tested, finished with child/food-safe natural oil, and engineered for fine-motor development, early STEM, literacy, and numeracy—true Montessori and Waldorf-friendly learning tools that look beautiful on a shelf and feel wonderful in small hands. Our toys are built to last and to be loved: serviceable hardware, satisfying allen-key builds, optional personalised/name engraving (on select items), and a Multiple Lifetime Guarantee that keeps good toys in play, not landfill. We believe fewer, better things make a happier home. Thoughtful materials, slow craft, and timeless design make Oak & Sprout the choice for premium wooden toys in the UK, Montessori toys, Waldorf toys, personalised wooden gifts, wooden puzzles for toddlers and preschoolers, wooden alphabet boards, wooden number boards and inset puzzles. Whether you’re searching for a wooden excavator or crane, a lowercase alphabet inset puzzle, or a numbers tracing board, you’ll find purposeful playthings that encourage concentration, independence, and open-ended imagination. Discover toys that earn a place in your family’s story—solid, sustainable, and made with care—at Oak & Sprout.

mportant Sourcing Facts for Buyers Expecting 'British Made'

UPDATE: The company’s response below is convoluted, using emotional appeals to deflect from the reality of their setup.

I am updating this because I see other reviews actively praising the brand for being "British made." To help other buyers see the actual facts and decide for themselves, here is the reality as per the company's response:

Core Manufacturing: The company has admitted below that the primary manufacturing work – the precision cutting and shaping of the timber – takes place entirely in Asia and Europe.

The "Assembly" Discrepancy: They claim UK "assembly" justifies their branding, but the vast majority of their range consists of flat wooden jigsaw puzzles and tracing boards, which require absolutely zero assembly. They are simply imported components oiled and boxed in the UK.

Unfair to True UK Artisans: It is totally okay to import goods, but wrapping an overseas supply chain in a "UK Maker" aesthetic is misleading. It heavily undercuts genuine British woodworkers who face massive UK overheads to cut and shape toys from scratch on British soil.

If you are happy with imported wood that are oiled and boxed in the UK, this brand is fine. But do not buy under the false impression that these are fully British-crafted items.

My original review to which the company responded is below:
-----------------------------------------------------------

I recently came across Oak and Sprout and was initially impressed by the aesthetic of their Montessori toys, particularly those featuring exotic hardwoods like Padauk and Zebrano. However, I have some concerns regarding the transparency of their manufacturing process that I hope the company can clarify.

I posted a polite question on their instagram page asking for confirmation on whether these items are manufactured in the UK. Instead of receiving a response, my comment was removed and I was blocked. This is a significant red flag for any consumer seeking to support local artisans.

My concerns are twofold:

Price vs. Material: As a woodcraft enthusiast, the pricing (e.g., £50-£60 for complex moving toys made of exotic timber) is remarkably low for UK-based labor and material costs. This suggests large-scale overseas manufacturing rather than local "hand-made" production.

"Hand-finished" vs. "Made": The website mentions being a "curator" and that items are "hand-finished in the UK." This distinction is important. It implies the primary machining and construction happen elsewhere, which contradicts the "small-batch British artisan" image the marketing portrays.

I am leaving this review to give the company an opportunity to provide a transparent public response. Where exactly are these toys cut, shaped, and assembled before they arrive in the UK for finishing?

I would be more than happy to update this review if the company can provide clear, honest information about their supply chain and Country of Origin.

Otherwise, the product seems to be genuine and engaging, only it is not made by a genuine "family-run studio".

Antwort von Oak & Sprout

Thank you for this — genuinely. You asked a fair question in good faith, and you deserve a straight answer rather than silence. So here it is.

First, the blocking — that was a mistake, and I'm sorry. A question like yours deserved an answer, not silence, and there was no intention to shut you down.

Now the substance, because you clearly know your timber and we'd rather talk to you as a peer than dodge you.

You're right that £50–60 is low for fully UK-made exotic hardwood toys, and we won't pretend otherwise. But the reason isn't large-scale overseas production — we're genuinely small (a recent run was around 150 block sets over a fortnight, made by us, a couple of local freelancers and some friends, they're still drying).

There's more than one honest way to price wood. A lot of makers price each piece at the true value of the hours in it — which is right, and probably what you'd expect to see. We've gone the other way: thin margins, sold in volume. Not because we don't rate the work, but because we'd rather these woods reach a lot of children than a few — and, honestly, because volume is the only way a business our size survives. It may well come back to bite us, and it's harder than it looks. Not a "retire-early" business — but it's ours.

On where the work happens: our oak comes from Norfolk. Our exotic hardwoods grow across the world — purpleheart in Brazil, and so on — and we have them cut close to where the trees grow, in parts of Europe and Asia, under CITES certification. That's deliberate: shipping a whole log across the planet is wasteful, so the timber is cut to size near its source, which means less waste and fewer trees felled. What arrives with us is carefully cut stock — just pieces of wood basically. Everything after that — assembly (you'd assumed that happened abroad; it doesn't, it's ours), every bolt, the oiling, the drying, the safety checks and the finishing — is done by hand by us here in Wiltshire. The finishing is the part we would never hand to anyone else, because the oil is what ends up in a child's mouth, and our three year old daughter plays with these.

So, "hand-finished in the UK" is precise rather than evasive — but you've fairly pointed out that "curator" can read as "we don't really make anything," which isn't right either, and we're making our sourcing clearer on the site because of this review.

The bit that stung most: we are a genuine family-run studio. It's me, my partner, our little one usually underfoot or trying to play with something, a couple of freelancers on our industrial estate, and a new apprentice we're lucky enough to train up. Some of the wood being cut abroad doesn't change that — it just means we put our own hands on the part that matters most.

And a genuine thank-you to finish on. We hear "isn't this a bit pricey?" far more often than the reverse, and it stings every time — so someone who clearly values the craft telling us the work is worth more than we charge is, honestly, lovely to read. You're probably right, too; we may well have to raise them one day. You found what we make engaging enough to take it seriously — and whether or not you ever buy from us, that matters. If anything's still unclear, just ask — we'll answer.

Care, quality, integrity

We were drawn to this company by the quality and flair in design of the children’s’ toys. We knew they would be well received by our Grandson.
Unfortunately, there was a problem with meeting the next day delivery, but we were very pleasantly surprised to receive a personal call explaining the situation to us. An additional complimentary toy was added to our order, which was entirely unexpected.
We would have no hesitation in recommending Oak&Sprout and believe their products would grace any High Street.
Thank you for your honesty and integrity. Exceptional and we wish you every success with your business

Highly recommend!

It's hard nowadays to find high-quality, non-toxic toys that are still within a normal family's budget. Even when I do find a site that looks promising, it's often just a pretty website masking the same old drop-shipped crap from China, marked up in price ten times. After some serious poking around their site, I took a risk on Oak & Sprout and ordered their number board for my toddler. Shipping was prompt, the board is nicely packaged, and it's a beautiful wooden piece. It's one of those toys that you hold onto to pass down to a friend's baby. I love that they don't use paints, only natural wood. I would definitely recommend Oak & Sprout, and hope to purchase from them again. :-)
