Chafer Grubs are a pretty tough pest to control and the best time to apply Chafer Grub Killer Nematodes is late Summer to Autumn, which is when the grubs are at an immature stage.

You can treat Chafer Grubs in spring as the grubs work come higher up in the soil, but the grubs are much more resistant to the nematodes, as they are nearing maturity and treating now you will be reducing the numbers somewhat.

In terms of the animals digging your lawn, this could be to feed on infected grubs (which will be harmless to the birds) or it could be that the species of Chafer Grub you have are more resistant to nematodes.

Hopefully you will see a reduction in the damage caused by animals soon.

To increase the likely hood of success we recommend:

Cut the grass short before treatment.
Soil should be between 12°C and 30°C during application and for at least two weeks after.
Irrigate the area to be treated prior to application in order to apply the nematodes to a moist lawn.

To avoid desiccation of the nematodes:

Avoid direct sunlight; make applications in the evenings or in dull conditions
Application during rain is highly desirable.
It is very important to irrigate immediately after application, water the grass well so the nematodes are washed below the thatch layer into the soil to reach the roots where the larvae will be feeding.
Ensure soil is moist for at least two weeks after application.

Hi Sean,

I am sorry to hear that you were not satisfied with the results.

The best time of year to tackle these pests is Autumn, but there is a window of opportunity in spring, but this is a less optimal period (see diagrams on our website).

When you have an infestation, it is highly likely that you may need to complete multiple applications (both in spring) and in Autumn.

I appreciate that nematodes are expensive and you may not want to spend more money on nematodes, so there are a few other things you can try.

1) Sweating out Leatherjackets:
a. To effectively sweat out leatherjackets, begin by generously watering the turf in the early evening and covering the area with either a tarpaulin or black plastic sheeting. (Ensure secure placement by weighting it down with pegs, timber, old tires, or bricks.)
b. In the morning, remove the cover to reveal leatherjackets on the turf's surface. Count the number per square meter and record it.
c. These pests can then be gathered by sweeping or mowing and disposed of. In cases of high infestation, a shovel and wheelbarrow may be necessary. Avoid leaving them on the turf for too long as they may burrow back into the rootzone, especially through aeration holes.
d. Consistent nightly coverage should gradually reduce their numbers.
e. Each removed leatherjacket grub represents a potential female crane fly capable of laying 200-300 eggs, leading to future infestations.
f. While it's a cost-effective cultural control method, it demands significant labour.

2) Mowing your lawn frequently (especially when "Crane Flies" are present) in an attempt to suck up as many of the eggs as possible.

3) Support your lawn as much as possible to aid root growth (lawn feed, weed and moss killer).

I see you said you applied as advised, but I must reiterate the importance of the following points - to maximise the success of the product:

I am sorry you are disappointed. It does state Miracle Gro in the description on the website –

This Hose End Feeder is ideal for applying Nemasys Nematodes.
The 'Miracle-Gro Hose End Feeder' has been tested and approved for applying the Nematodes listed below by Nematodes Direct and can also be used for applying liquid feed to plants and lawns.
It simply attaches via standard hose-pipe connector (not included) and features both a rose head and jet spray as well as an on / off switch for water flow.

With these sundry items we can not compete with stockists like Amazon and there prices fluctuate daily, so whilst they might be £14.99 today, they might be £25.99 tomorrow. We are charged a flat rate, but be assured we have not put a £10.00 increase on ourselves.
