I can’t stress this enough – do not take out a mortgage with The Co-operative Bank.
They changed our mortgage terms halfway through our fixed period, reducing our payments without any consultation. When we asked to keep the agreed fixed terms in place, they refused.
After the end of the term, when we switched mortgages, they took a double payment from our account without any warning or consent. They were not entitled to take any money as our mortgage had ended. They later admitted this was their error and said they would refund it within 7–10 working days. With a bank holiday coming up, that was far from ideal. When I asked whether they would include the interest earned on the money they had taken, they said no – they would be keeping it.
Customer service hasn’t been great either. Call handlers are often unhelpful, seemingly know very little (or at least are unable to answer simple questions) and getting a clear overview of your mortgage is difficult. There’s no app, no proper payment history, and no real forecasting. You can now see the remaining balance, but even that isn’t always accurate.
If this saves anyone else the stress and hassle, it’s worth saying.
Today I wanted to transfer money from my account to a company and I was impressed by how easy and fast the transaction was.
I have been a Co-op customer for some time now and have opened a regular saver account. It gives a 7% interest at time of writing, which is very good. While, during the application, I was asked the necessary questions and nothing too out of the ordinary, the process seems needlessly complicated.
It could be streamlined so much more, e.g. you have to be an existing customer to apply for this product. Why not use the details you already have to pre-populate some fields.
One has to provide a reference for the standing order (if one sets one up). However, please tell me in advance that it has be to between 3 and 18 characters (and apparently no spaces).
After submitting a page, there is no ready indication that your mouse click has been recorded. It can take a few seconds to progress to next page.
The process, taking the above in mind, was still quick and relatively painless. I was able to get a good saving rate, so thank you.
Lovely experiance today with Stacey at the Barnsley branch, she made the transaction so easy and was really thorough which is what i like to see when dealing with my money
I’ve switched to the Coop and this all went without a hitch. I’m enjoying using the app, I’ve received emails to keep me informed and not had to search for the info. The app always works and I’ve been achieving my banking needs. It’s simple, clear, efficient. I’ve opened the savings account which is 7%, but I found I couldn’t adjust the payment date of the monthly transfer, so had to cancel it and reinstate.
Great customer service. Helped me out during a very stressful situation.

Rubbish bank, there app is always down, the app updated and locked me out of my account for some reason and the phone line to unlock the account is closed until the next day, so I can't access my online banking until tomorrow, not to mention you have to wait on the line for 30 minutes to get through to someone, I've had nothing but problems with the co op, one of my friends has said the same thing, I'm definitely changing my bank tomorrow, and transferring all my funds over, awful banking service.

She gave me excellent advice and always wants to make sure my money is working for me. My son attended with me and he was very impressed with Sian’s professionalism.

I have been with the Cooperative bank for over 25 years, and whilst it has always been a straightforward and trustworthy bank, in the last week it has been outstanding! I was stupid enough, despite being a bright and intelligent person, to fall for a sophisticated scam, which left me virtually penniless. I called the bank, not with any real hope left in my breast, but they listened professionally, understood what had happened and outlined what they could do for me. Initially I thought it was a slim chance of any real help, but within an hour or so of the fraud department being passed the issue they called me and told me that if there was no change to my situation in the next 7 days they would refund/reimburse me the full amount on the 8th day. To say I was delighted and relieved is not enough to express my emotions. They were absolutely brilliant and I shed a tear or two at their kindness on the face of what I thought was completely my fault, but as they pointed out, really wasn't. Professional, kind, understanding and ,in my book, brilliant service.

Always takes a long time to contact the bank by phone. Then there are numerous options to go through before you get to speak to a person. We are not using online banking due to the issue around fraud. Used to have local branches you could call into or at least phone directly!
