The video shows a single sheet of glass in the channel. The channel is designed for two sheets of glass, so there would be more space in the channel if there were only one and hence more movement.

The channel is 11mm wide, so with two 4mm sheets of glass and the thickness of the handle (9mm total) there is then a couple of mm free movement. This is needed to allow free sliding of the glass.

We have been using this basic glass mounting design since 1958, and the units are used extensively in windy environments such as Scotland. In fact, the original designer of the units lived on the west coast of Scotland, so was very conscious of the effects of the wind when he designed the products.

Many thanks for the email and the photos. I have taken a look and that greenhouse was shipped to the customer in July 2024.

The good news is that the sheet of glass shattered exactly as we would expect, shattering into tiny pieces for safety. The glass sheets are toughened to European standard EN12150 which is the standard that covers the use of glass in buildings.

It does sound rather strange that a sheet of glass should shatter on its own, however the way toughened glass is made does mean that sometimes damage can build up over time with then a small event tipping the sheet over to shattering.

Once the glass has shattered, it is very difficult to try and work out what has caused the breakage. To explain the reasons as to why the glass shattered, I thought it best to explain a little bit about the glass toughening process:

Toughened safety glass is widely used in the glazing industry for two reasons – it preserves all of the advantages of glass while addressing the safety issues of untreated glass, which can break into large, dangerous shards. The toughening process works by heating the cut sheet of glass back up to its almost molten state, then quenching the glass very rapidly in cold air, making the glass up to 7 times stronger. This creates a permanently stressed inner core of glass, surrounded by a thin ‘envelope’ of un-toughened glass. This outer ‘envelope’ acts a little bit like a balloon – any piercing of this outer layer causes the release of the tension held inside, causing the glass to shatter into thousands of small fragments.

This thin outer edge can be pierced in a number of different ways, but most frequently it is either by a corner of the glass being twisted or bent (most typically in our greenhouses this occurs when a sheet of glass is removed and the trailing edge of the glass is caught in the channel); or the edges of the glass have been damaged. Sometime this damage occurs all at once, eg. it is put down heavily onto a patio, or it can occur over time with small amounts of damage being sustained to the edge of the glass. Eventually there comes a tipping point at which the damage to the edge causes the glass to shatter.

This tipping point is what causes issues with toughened glass as, rather like the straw which breaks the camel’s back, sometimes the thing that takes the glass over the tipping point and causes the glass to shatter is quite small. The cracks propagate through the glass at the speed of sound - this leads to the feeling that the glass has somehow spontaneously combusted!
