Absolute scam. I purchased an ebook, I have purchased many books over the years and I have always had a downloadable copy to do with as I please. NOT WITH BOOKTOPIA, LOCKED INTO THEIR KOBO ENVIRONMENT AND NO WAY TO DOWNLOAD EBOOK OUTSIDE OF THEIR ENVIRONMENT.

Rubbish. Avoid at all costs. They say they have items in stock when they don't, but take your money anyway.
Zero communication, nothing about the delay, even when you contact them.
Buy elsewhere.

Will never order from Booktopia again. Shipping times are misleading, the books are not sent within the time frame stated. I ordered books mid-december to arrive in time for the new school year. Four weeks later I am still waiting for the items to be shipped. I've been advised by customer service it could still be another 2-3 weeks. Why not send a courtesy email advising of the delay? Why take my money immediately, but I have to wait over 6 weeks? The company should only take funds once the books have arrived in the warehouse and are ready to be shipped. I am appalled at the conduct of this company, and looking at all the reviews, it seems many others feel the same way.

Placed an order on the 30th of November in 2025. It's the 12th of January and it has not arrived. I followed up twice with them and on both occasions they said the same thing: your order will arrive in a week or two. Booktopia is not trustworthy.
I've had past deliveries from Booktopia and on more than half the occasions they sent damaged items or items packed incorrectly.
Booktopia is not customer oriented. They barely deliver minimum services. Time to take my business to a more reliable provider, probably someone from overseas given that in Australia, one of their largest providers is misleading customers.

Unfortunately, my book arrived damaged and in bad condition. Really sad as this was a gift. Picked Booktopia to avoid Amazon as their books always arrive damaged. Sad to see that it is the same for Booktopia.

Had an order of two items. One was marked as to be delivered a month ago. It didn't show up. Contacted them on the day it was supposed to be delivered. Received a response only yesterday and they weren't interested in helping.
The other item is still on order and hasn't been delivered. I'm aiming to cancel now. Having items go missing is bad enough, receiving a completely disinterested response A MONTH after reporting it is clearly not acceptable.

We ordered a book that was shown as being in stock on December 14 and were promised delivery within 5 days. It was to be a Christmas present. On January 9 we asked why it wasn’t delivered and were told sorry not in stock and we could either wait for it to be available at some non specified date or we could have a refund after some to and fro we decided on a refund and was told it would take between one and three business days today being a Friday I don’t expect to see the refund until later next week, when we ordered and paid for the book the money disappeared from our account almost immediately. Reading other reviews with similar experiences it seems that Booktopia will accept the orders and take the money without having the books in stock and hope for the best. I will certainly never deal with them again and will advise others to use other on line book stores

After repeated and consistently appalling experiences with Booktopia, it is abundantly clear that this company has nothing but contempt for its customers. Across multiple orders, I have encountered shockingly rude and dismissive customer service, items arriving damaged, orders that were inexplicably split and delivered weeks apart, and a complete lack of transparency regarding stock availability. Products are advertised as available when they are not, only for customers to discover this months later after chasing the company for answers.
To make matters worse, items that eventually do arrive are sometimes shipped with such blatant carelessness that they are sent loose in cardboard, with no protective packaging whatsoever, leaving them exposed to damage from handling and the elements. This level of negligence is unacceptable and demonstrates a complete disregard for both the product and the customer.
This company is disorganised, unreliable, and indifferent to customer satisfaction in every possible way. Save yourself the frustration and disappointment—avoid Booktopia at all costs.

Made a purchase on 4/12/25 with the intention of getting the book by Christmas and it’s now 4/1/26 & I still haven’t received the book. Customer service doesn’t respond. Shop with Booktopia at your own risk! There are better more reputable online book stores out there!

I ordered some books as a Christmas present in early December.
Online they claimed it was in stock & would arrive well before Christmas.
After the delivery date came & went I contacted customer support who told me they were waiting for it to be shipped to their warehouse & would be another 2-3 weeks for them to even ship it to me.
I wouldn't have purchased if they had not claimed it was in stock. By the time I was advised it would not be here for Christmas I didn't have time to organise something else.

Terrible customer service ignored my request to refund my order after 18 days and 2 requests to cancel on day 10 and day 16 when it became apparent from their website they were out of stock, after misleading me that it would be delivered in a week when ordered. I was only in Australia temporarily and have asked them again today to stop the order and refund, otherwise the more likely a waste of A$50 for me. Annoyed.
Update: Booktopia have contacted me and processed a refund, so changing improving my star rating although disappointed i'm pleased they followed up.

Hi, bought 3 books for my father who's in a nursing home not doing so great, but that is besides the point, purchased 1st of dec 2025, invoice said 10 to 15 days had work for 14 days then drove 2 days to see my father and brother on 20th dec 2025 arrived, no books notified booktopia reply on 22nd dec 2025 that books would turn up on 24th dec 2025 had 2 day drive back to work 23rd dec now my fathers xmas present will now wait 14 days for me to drive back down and give him his late xmas present thanks for ruining xmas.

Their descriptions are very poor. their cropped photos of book covers and poor descriptions with duplicate listings varying only slightly in price makes it hard to discern if you are buying the correct book, and their returns policy is crap, I was met with passive aggressive attitude when the book my husband tried to get me for christmas arrived and it was not the edition he thought he was buying, it is a smaller version with no sprayed edge that doesn't match the rest of my set, after giving attitude about returns for errors when ordering etc, were offered a store credit if we pay shipping to return it. Bugger that, better of just reselling it or gifting it on, I won't be shopping here again personally, their loss as I like to spend money on special editions and hardcovers. hope this company has the 2026 it deserves.
