Refused service in an empty shop – despite a genuine OEM key

I visited the Timpson branch in West Swindon to have a spare key cut for my Yamaha motorcycle. The shop was completely empty, yet the assistant refused to cut the key.

The reason given was that they “couldn’t guarantee the quality” because the blank key hadn’t been supplied by them — even though the blank was a genuine Yamaha coded key in original OEM packaging.

Apparently this is “company policy”.

What makes this particularly ironic is the statement on the Timpson website from John Timpson himself saying that colleagues have his “total authority to give customers amazing service whatever it takes.”

Based on my experience, that philosophy clearly isn’t being applied here.

Turning away simple business in an empty shop over a genuine manufacturer key blank is not customer service — it’s simply poor practice and a very strange way to run a retail operation.

I’ll now be finding a key-cutting service that is actually interested in cutting keys, rather than insisting on selling the blank first and charging extra for the privilege.

Timpson has lost a customer.

I normally use the Timpson next to…

I normally use the Timpson next to Tesco in Tenterden, Kent and it’s always fantastic. But I recently relocated to Vauxhall/Nine Elms - the Timpson at Sainsbury’s there is fabulous, Garry was really helpful regarding fixing some hiking boots!

Hammersmith Broadway branch of Timpsons

Hammersmith Broadway. This Timpson branch is consistently the most unfriendly and unprofessional location I have visited, and I will not be returning. I was left standing without any acknowledgement while the staff member continued repairing a shoe, refusing to even look up for a few seconds to recognise a waiting customer.
When I requested a battery replacement under my Timpson lifetime guarantee, I was told to leave my watch, receipt, and card with no proof of handover and return at the end of the day. Expecting a customer to leave a valuable item without any receipt or assurance is completely unacceptable. Given that the staff member hadn’t even noticed me standing there, I had no confidence my property would be handled responsibly.
This is not a one‑off incident. Previous visits have shown the same dismissive attitude, and it is clear this branch has a persistent issue with customer service. The lack of professionalism, basic courtesy, and accountability is unacceptable, and the staff would benefit from proper customer service training.
I will not be spending any further money at this branch and will be advising colleagues to consider alternative options before using their services.

Yesterday, Timpson Tesco Hastings Extra transformed my battered and dead Citroen C1 key into a working remote key again. Nice guy. Great value. Excellent service. Thank you very much.

Really GREAT service!

Went to Timpsons in Selfridges, Oxford Street, London. The man who served me got my watch to change the date straight away- my fault it didn't and fitted a new watchstrap for me. Also changed the battery in another watch. Really GREAT service! Lovely man, very helpful and I will definitely go there again. They seemed very busy mending all sorts of things but customer service was second to none. Thank you so much!

Watch returned damaged after battery replacement

I sent my Longines watch to Timpson for a battery replacement because I believed they were a trusted brand that would take proper care of it.

The watch came back with the battery replaced, but the crown is now completely stuck. It used to pull out easily to two positions to adjust the date and moonphase, but now it won’t move at all. As a result, I can’t correct the date or moonphase.

This watch is my most valuable piece of jewellery, so it’s extremely disappointing to have it returned in worse condition than when I sent it.

I contacted Timpson through their website form five days ago and have still not received any response.

Between the service and postage this cost around £90, and now I’ll likely have to spend a similar amount again to get the watch repaired properly.

I chose Timpson because I expected a reliable service. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been my experience so far.

I went into Timpson in Harrow on the Hill (Branch 458). I was impressed by the customer service provided by Saiveon. He was polite , friendly and courteous towards others customers and with me. He is also knowledgeable about the services and built a good rapport. I would recommend the shop to all in the local area.

2 keys cut, both would not work

I went to a Timpsons store in a Morrisons store in Leeds for a key cutting. The key was cut and cost me £10.00. When i got home the key would not fit in the lock so I had to return it. I had another key cut and returned home only for the same problem, it wouldnt work in the lock. I returned again and asked for a refund due to the poor service which i got with no issues. May i add that each time i returned the staff concerned were apologetic and friendly with no problems there. I went elsewhere in the end and the key i had cut worked perfectly, and i paid half the price. Timpsons need to train staff better or whats the point of the service. I will never use them again.

Professional and prompt !!

The professional service at the Timpsons Ealing shopping centre on the main piazza is fantastic ! Very polite and prompt as well. I have gone there regularly and went there recently on 7th March Saturday.Both of the staff were great. Please make sure they get recognised.

A series of failure

My experience with Timpson has been a nightmare from start to finish. I originally took my vintage leather bag in for a professional colour touch-up; the result was amateur—patchy, uneven, and covered in a transferable black residue.

When I complained to point out the poor quality, the staff member was incredibly unprofessional. He refused to admit any wrongdoing and actually falsely accused me of "insisting" he perform the treatment. This was a total fabrication used to cover up his own lack of skill and a complete lack of professional integrity.

I escalated this to customer service and agreed to drop the bag off strictly for a specialist inspection. I provided clear instructions that no further work was to be carried out without my express consent and a formal assessment.

Timpson completely ignored these instructions. They performed an unauthorised "treatment" without any communication, and the black residue is now significantly worse. Because I was not informed that more product had been applied, I handled the bag normally, and it has now permanently stained my white clothing.

From the dishonesty at the branch level to the total lack of administrative control in their "specialist" centre, Timpson has proven to be incompetent and untrustworthy. I am now forced to find a genuine specialist to attempt to salvage the leather.

Twice I've been to my local branch to…

Twice I've been to my local branch( Sainsbury's Selhurst Park)to get a passport photo taken and twice it has been declined by the government site because the background they're using for their photos is inadequate. You're better off taking it a home yourself against a white background. Do not use their services.

I have always had an excellent service.

I have always had an excellent, friendly professional service from all the staff at Timpson's Great Barr Birmingham. Staff are helpful and cheerful, up for a friendly chat and deal with you without haste, you don't feel rushed by staff when you are handing in your garments. I recently dropped off a wedding dress to clean, and forgetfully handed it over in a personal garment cover and thought after I drove away "I probably won't see that again." However, I was pleasantly surprised to find it had been returned to me when I went to collect the wedding dress two weeks later. Many places would have probably discarded it, but Timpson's did not. Great service.

Boots ruined

I took a pair of motorbike boots in to be resoled. The boots were sent away and I collected them the boots now afford all the wind and rain protection of a pair of flip flops. I contacted Timpsons as I would prefer to give them a chance to rectify the problem. Apart from automated emails I have had no response. I have had to replace my destroyed boots at a cost of £465 plus the costs of paying Timpson's for their incompetence. I would not trust this company to fit a watch battery.
