Abysmal, trains are delayed at least twice a week on the reading line. Last minute cancellations over system errors and even don’t announce there is going to be a delay till you get on the train.

Website as good as the train service
New shiny website.
They didn't bother to port across old passwords so you now have to enter the new password, no rules specified and don't forget you have to type it in twice.
1st attempt, must have number I am informed, 2nd attempt, must have special character, 3rd attempt must have capital. They hate their customers and love messing with us.
Also now 2 different passwords , one for booking tix and 1 for delay repay. I bet some idiot got paid a fortune for this.
Passenger assistance today was…
Passenger assistance today was absolutely fantastic.I travelled from Sherborne in Dorset to Alton in Hampshire and had my case lifted on and off every train.Special thanks to Daniel in Woking station,he went the extra mile, took my suitcase into the lift to platform 5 and waited for my train to arrive and put my case on board.
Without all your help I would not be able to travel. You all make such a difference to our lives and are so appreciated.

Exceptional Customer Service
There are so many negative railway experiences these days that I felt I wanted to share my encounter with a young man by the name of Obriel, who was in charge of announcements and operations on platform no. 9 at Clapham Junction today. He could not have been more helpful and polite, and assisted me fully with my enquiry rather than making me feel that my very presence was a nuisance, which is so often the way people of my age are made to feel these days. And it was not just me who benefited from the attention of this kind and pleasant young man. I spoke to a couple of people on the platform who felt exactly the same, one of whom said that he had come across Obriel a few times before and this was his way. He was also in charge of making announcements which were made calmly and clearly and left no-one in any doubt as to what was happening and gave clear instructions regarding railway platform safety. You could do well, SWR, to put this young man in charge of staff training as sadly he might be the exception rather than the rule - hence his actions are so much appreciated. Truly well done Obriel. You deserve to do well.
Constant loud voice announcements, very tiring
It is not possible to read or listen to music or just rest on these trains. Constant loud announcements non stop during your whole journey. Absolutely unnecessary information like "safety information is displayed in all coaches" etc. hundreds of various absurd and meaningless announcements. If you are traveling from work you cannot rest. If you are traveling to work you already get tired before you started you workday. Terrible experience.
Trying to enjoy a peaceful journey yet…
Trying to enjoy a peaceful journey yet was harassed to do a survey. Gaslighting because 1 out of 100 journeys are actually reliable is not going to achieve anything
Would give 0 stars if I could
Would give 0 stars if I could. Worst rail network available. Train was cancelled last minute, all other trains delayed and then further delays along the journey. Was considerably late for a conference that was very expensive. Will drive next time rather than rely on such a terrible service - sadly not anone off experience with this network and a regular feature. Useless.
4 out of 9 toilets closed....…
Was at Southampton Central Station on Saturday evening at around 6.30pm. Toilets on platform 1 all closed. Platform 4 had around 4 or 5 youths enjoying one of them repeatedly throwing a phone to the floor to try and demolish it,I wasn't sure if it would bounce up at me. I needed to pass them to get to the disaster which is their unisex toilets on platgorm 4, as they have removed the single sex provision. 4 out of the nine toilets were out of order. I am queuing with men and women, and thinking if those teenagers need the toilets,it's such an intimidating experience for me and other women. SWR has ignored the safety needs of women, and the urinal needs of men,in its determination to remove separate toilets. That's not to mention the needs of women travelling with primary age children.
Scandal
Sadly, they are a bunch of thieves. £10 admin charge to change the date of a ticket. It’s theft with a legal guise. No other trade or organisation could get away with it. Imagine taking back that shirt that doesn’t fit. £10 admin charge to get your money back. Scandalous. I can’t make the journey because I’m in hospital with gallstones.
Another Audacious RUDE INSPECTOR
Today I am submitting my third formal complaint regarding South Western Railway and the conduct of its staff. The fact that I feel compelled to complain yet again speaks volumes about the declining standards of customer service on your services.
On the 17:55 South Western Railway service from Fratton to London Waterloo, I experienced unacceptable and hostile behaviour from a ticket inspector named Kallum.
When I boarded the train, it was not busy. I initially sat at a six-seater by the window and placed my handbag and a gift bag on two of the seats. I then temporarily moved two aisle rows away to a two-seater with a table so that I could finish applying press-on nails and tidy my makeup. I was within clear sight and close proximity of my belongings at all times. I had every intention of returning to my original seat within approximately five minutes.
Kallum approached me in what I can only describe as an unnecessarily hostile and confrontational manner. After checking my valid ticket, he questioned whether the items on the six-seater were mine. I calmly confirmed that they were and explained that I would be returning to that seat momentarily. Despite this, he instructed me to move my belongings immediately or he would remove them and place them in lost property.
This threat was entirely disproportionate. My items were clearly not lost. They consisted of a visible gift bag with clothing and a handbag. There was nothing unattended in a suspicious manner, and I was seated only two aisle rows away. I explained I would be finished within minutes. Nevertheless, he proceeded to remove my belongings and place them in the overhead storage without my consent, claiming they were occupying “eight seats across the train,” which was factually incorrect.
Approximately two minutes later, I returned to my original seat and retrieved my belongings. I then approached Kallum to request his name, as I intended to make a complaint regarding his conduct. Instead of responding professionally, he immediately became defensive and questioned why I “needed” his name, implying that I had no right to complain. He further stated that this was “his train” and that I was “lucky” he had not moved my belongings to lost property. Most concerningly, he stated that next time he would throw my belongings onto the platform.
This statement was made audibly in front of other passengers and was both inappropriate and deeply unprofessional. A paying customer should never be threatened, belittled, or publicly embarrassed for a minor seating issue — particularly when the train was not full and when I was in close proximity to my belongings.
At no stage was I aggressive, disruptive, or refusing to comply. I simply questioned the proportionality of his actions. Instead of de-escalating the situation, Kallum escalated it, adopted a possessive and authoritative tone (“his train”), and attempted to intimidate me for asserting my right to complain.
I would like to understand:
Is it South Western Railway policy to threaten customers with disposal of their belongings?
Is it company policy for staff to challenge a passenger’s right to make a complaint?
Is it considered acceptable for staff to create a public spectacle over a minor seating matter?
This incident reflects extremely poorly on South Western Railway. I regularly use other operators, including West Midlands Railway and Avanti, and have not encountered this level of hostility or dismissiveness from their staff. The contrast in customer treatment is stark.
I expect:
A full investigation of this incident (CCTV should be reviewed).
Clarification of staff policy regarding passenger belongings and lost property.
Confirmation of what action will be taken to address this conduct.
I am a fare-paying passenger and expect to be treated with basic dignity and respect. This level of hostility from staff is unacceptable and continues to damage confidence in your service.
I look forward to your formal response.
Shepperton line trains always getting…
Shepperton line trains always getting cancelled or delayed. It is 2026 in one of the world’s biggest capitals, yet public transport is worst than that in most third world countries.
I was denied access to the train station and I had to purchase another ticket
I was travelling from Yeovil to Lawrence hill and I had a valid ticket. My journey involved changing train to Salisbury.
I caught the first train in Yeovil at 15.31 and arrived in Salisbury around 17.30. My next train to Bristol was the Cardiff central scheduled at 17.46 so I have asked the lady at the entrance gate if I could get out the station for a cigarette and come back. After checking my ticket she agreed to let me go out. Upon my return, the person who let me out wasn’t there, instead there was another assistant, so I asked him to let me. He checked my ticket and said that my ticket wasn’t valid and I had no right to access the station without a valid ticket. I objected and explained him the situation again but he just kept saying I did not have a valid ticket. I went to the ticket office and Jon, the assistant, repeated the same thing and basically forced me to pay for a new ticket if I wanted to board the train. I despite having a valid open return ticket I had to purchase another ticket. I am utterly appalled by the poor customer service I have received, both the station assistants stopped to listen to me and kept challenging me in an unprofessional manner. They did not even checked the train journey I had been shown on GWR website and I had to ask the assistant to stop challenging me because it was making me uncomfortable.
Horrendous
Horrendous. On so many levels. Clearly no one cares.
Cancelled, Delayed and Cancelled Again
I'm so unbelievably fed up of this company. I am all for nationalisation as I follow a socialist political mindset, however SWR has been absolutely shocking since this happened. The amount of trains that are delayed or cancelled has to be a record high now. One train this morning arrives 20 minutes late, only to not be stopping at any stations between Malden Manor and Waterloo. Luckily I'm never normally late when trains are (regularly) delayed or cancelled, but I really feel for those who have probably been told off by their bosses because of these delays.
Also, the Arterio carriages are shambolic - if you're taller than 4 foot 3" you're gonna struggle with leg room.
Absolutely terrible.
The only reason they still operate is because people rely on their trains. If there was another choice than taking the train for these journeys, SWR wouldn't last a day.
They're overpriced, poorly staffed (the staff are lovely, but there's none of them).
If you go on the London to Reading train, good luck using the loo, they're always closed, which I think is disgusting for a 1 hour+ train.
I haven't got a single good thing to say about this company, other than they run a service which I unfortunately have to rely on sometimes so don't have another viable option.
If I could, I'd walk over glass the whole way rather than take this train.

A really awful railway service overall. Consistently delayed or cancelled, worse pricing than buses, and their customer support is shocking. They demand so much proof, and even refused to refund a train ticket delayed by 50 minutes. Absolutely appalling.
