Dyno sent out Ian who quickly fixed my emergency!

Dyno sent out Ian on an emergency call to my home to deal with a leak from my central heating on a Saturday evening. A short time after arriving Ian had cut off and capped the failed pipe, isolated the radiator where the pipe was damaged and got my central heating up and running again. Thanks Ian for great job, very much appreciated.

Terrible Plumbers - Good Customer Service

I was referred to Dyno-Rod by British Gas because I am a HomeCare Complete customer, although not for much longer thanks to this.

The issue was that I had a leaky kitchen tap and the cold tap knob had more or less threaded off, meaning unless you applied just the right amount of pressure at the right spot the tap just wouldn't come on.

After the referral Dyno-Rod were in touch promptly to arrange a visit. The first bloke (called 'Ian', didn't mention his last name) arrived on time although it was early in the morning and he looked absolutely knackered. Needless to say, my confidence in him was not high. The tap was old and needed copper pipes swapping for flexi-hoses and some minimal rearrangement of the pipework under the sink.

He had difficulty getting the old tap off and the new tap on and basically just kinked up the hoses in the small amount of space he had and jammed them onto a couple of isolation valves he'd bodged on to the copper pipes already present. He said the job was sorted, I took him at his word and he left.

Within an hour, water was dripping from both the isolation valves he'd put in. I rang Dyno-Rod at their North-East/Trimdon office and the lady I spoke to was brilliant and incredibly understanding. She arranged for the bloke to come straight back out.

Upon arrival, he had a look, nipped up the isolation valve on the cold water pipe and removed a small section of the hot water pipe before adding a push-fit elbow bend and reattaching the isolation valve, leaving things marginally better but still cramped and pressing against one another. At no point did I see him deburr any pipe section, polish any pipe section or apply jointing compound to any compression fitting. I was watching the whole time in disbelief. He said it was sorted and left.

Fast forward an hour. Still leaking from the cold tap.

Rang Dyno-Rod back and again, amazing customer service from the office lady I spoke to. She was genuinely sorry and arranged for a different engineer (at my request, I'd had enough of the first cowboy) to come out even it meant him coming out after hours.

The chap arrived earlier than I thought. He was a sound young lad and completely removed the cramped cold water pipe section, leaving a good amount of original pipe. He fitted a brand new push-fit Tee-piece (to feed my washing machine) and a new isolation valve. He deburred and used jointing compound. He was happy, I was happy, and he left. Cold water pipe fittings troubled me no more - the lad was decent.

Went to put the kitchen stuff back under the sink an hour or so later and the hot pipe fixings were wet. Only a couple of drips, but it couldn't be ignored. Another call to Dyno-Rod the following morning, another pleasant exchange and another convenient appointment. This bloke (third plumber, fourth visit at this point) did...well, I'm not sure what he did. I told him the problem and I left him to it and when I came back nothing really had changed and he just said he'd nipped it up a bit around where he felt moisture. I asked him if it wouldn't be better to rearrange things and take things off, reassemble, add new fittings to create space, etc, and he said no. So he left and sure enough it was still leaking hours later.

By this point I was absolutely demented. I tried to ring British Gas but only got excuses from their out of hours people so waited and rang Dyno-Rod back for a final time the following day. I have to say again, the customer service was amazing. The lady was completely sympathetic, shocked at the experience I'd had and arranged someone to come out at the date and time I had requested (as I had plans that day).

Upon arrival, the fourth plumber (fifth visit) was again a young lad who took the time to do things properly. He completely removed the bodged elbow-bend the first bloke had put in, trimmed back the pipe to create space and put a new isolation valve onto the hot water feed. He did use jointing compound (although didn't deburr) and seemed competent. To his credit, he waited a long time to see if things would leak. They didn't. We were both happy and he left.

Now, whether this was through sheer bad luck, inexperience (the lad was only 20, just out of training) or the cruel hand of fate...a day later the hot water pipe isolation valve was leaking.

I'm not a plumber by trade but I know just enough from past experience and so I resolved to complete the job myself, with YouTube covering any knowledge gaps. It cost me just over what I'd paid to British Gas (as a compulsory excess) for the tools and the fittings and I spent a morning cutting and reattaching things to my satisfaction. No leaks. No drips.

Honestly, I can only imagine the anxiety I would feel if I had to get Dyno-Rod back out to do a bigger job with even a small amount of complexity.

I will certainly be avoiding them in the future.
