I've been buying Proper Marmalade for a couple of years now, wouldn't go elsewhere! I'm a big fan of the gin and tonic and blood orange flavours, perfect on hot buttered toast with a cuppa. The marmalades make lovely gifts too, they are so nicely packaged. Great to be able to support a lovely small business.

Ordering and delivery on their website was simple. What a great choice of fun marmalade recipes and they taste amazing. I will be ordering again needed.

This marmalade is unparalleled, in my opinion. The classics, Seville and Tawny, are delicious, and I've not found better in any supermarket. I've been exploring the range a little and some of these recipes deserve classic status: chocolate splattered is a genius idea, with just the right amount of splatter; the orange and bergamot like having a fine earl grey at your side, and the Clementine and ginger is just delicious.

It's not the cheapest, (nor eye-wateringly expensive) but the taste makes a breakfast something special, and is worth a few pence extra of a morning. The dozen or so jars I've have been consistently good.

I recently had the pleasure of buying some jars of marmalade from this great little company, based in Devon. Love that all their marmalade is hand-made and the jars are also quite lovely to keep after you've finished! They had some really different flavours, and the taste was always delicious! Alex was also very helpful, when I had a query about the delivery. Highly recommend!!

The marmalade tastes nice, but it's nearly £6 for a tiny 225g jar, and the consistency is completely unpredictable. One jar can be a solid block, while another one is almost like water. I understand that fruit can vary, but that's not really the customer's problem. If you're charging premium prices, I expect a reasonably consistent final product. I shouldn't have to gamble every time I buy a jar and wonder whether I'm getting marmalade or orange-flavoured liquid.
Another issue is the lack of transparency about the oranges. Citrus peel is used in marmalade, and citrus fruits are commonly treated with pesticides and post-harvest chemicals. Yet there is very little information about where the fruit comes from, how it is grown or whether it is treated after harvesting. Considering that the peel itself ends up in the final product, I would expect much more transparency about the main ingredient.
What makes the price even harder to justify is that I can buy a much larger jar of organic marmalade from M&S for a fraction of the price. The ingredients are just as simple, with no unnecessary additives, the oranges are organic, and tastes succulent!
So for me, "handmade" and "small batch" alone don't automatically justify charging nearly £6 for 225g. If I'm paying premium prices, I expect consistent quality, proper transparency about the ingredients and something noticeably better than a supermarket product. Unfortunately, I don't feel like I'm getting that here.

Thank you for your response. I think you have slightly missed the point of my review. I'm not questioning whether other customers enjoy your marmalade, I'm explaining why, based on my own experience, I don't consider it good value for the price. My concerns were the inconsistent consistency and the lack of transparency around the sourcing and treatment of the oranges. Those points aren't really addressed by saying that other customers enjoy the product.
I completely accept that other people may value the handmade, small-batch aspect more than I do. That's precisely what reviews are for sharing different customer experiences.
