Bought this sunscreen thinking I was doing the right thing for my kids. Tried it myself when it arrived. Applied a small amount on my bald head. Took me about 30 minutes to rub in! Even then it didn’t absorb. Walked round to pick up my daughter looking like a ghost Don’t buy. Has to be better alternative out there

We're sorry Shade wasn't the right sunscreen for you, and we completely understand that the texture and appearance can be surprising if you're used to conventional sunscreens.
Shade is a concentrated, water-free mineral sunscreen made with non-Nano zinc oxide, so it isn't designed to absorb into the skin or be rubbed in until it's completely invisible. Instead, you warm a small amount between your hands and spread it evenly over the skin, where the zinc oxide forms a protective mineral layer. A visible white sheen is normal, although it does tend to soften and fade as the product settles and warms on the skin.
We appreciate that this isn't for everyone, which is why we're working hard to make the differences between Shade and conventional sunscreens as clear as possible before people buy.
We're genuinely sorry you were disappointed, but we hope this explanation helps clarify why the product behaved the way it did.
smelly sunscreen
I like the fact that they are trying to make something that is good for our skin (without toxic chemicals) and also not damaging to the environment so I ordered some sunscreen. Unfortunately the product was very expensive for a tiny pot and not worth the money at all. It came out too white and thick and smelt absolutely horrible. When I went on the website to see if I could get a refund for the ones I hadn't opened it said they will not accept returns for not liking the smell or because of the white texture as that is how the product is. If they know it smells unpleasant and is white and thick maybe they should let people know in the description before hand.

Shade is very different from a conventional sunscreen. It's a concentrated, completely water-free mineral sunscreen made with just four ingredients: non-Nano zinc oxide, unrefined shea butter, coconut oil and beeswax. This means it is naturally thicker than a water-based lotion and the zinc oxide can leave a visible white mineral sheen on the skin.
Shade is also unscented, meaning we don't add any synthetic fragrance to mask the natural aroma of its ingredients. Unrefined shea butter has its own distinctive natural scent, which can vary from batch to batch. Some people love it, others find it earthy or unusual, although the scent generally dissipates quite quickly after application.
We completely take your point that these characteristics need to be made very clear before someone chooses to buy Shade. We've been working to improve our product descriptions and customer education so that people understand exactly what to expect – including the texture, natural scent and visible mineral finish – before purchasing.
On price, Shade can initially appear expensive for the size of the tin, but it is a concentrated, water-free formulation rather than a diluted lotion, so a little goes a long way. We also use carefully selected natural ingredients and non-Nano zinc oxide, and manufacture on a much smaller scale than multinational cosmetic brands.
We're sorry that your experience didn't meet your expectations, and we appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback. Feedback like this helps us understand where we need to communicate the differences between Shade and conventional sunscreens more clearly.
Try the smallest size first
It's great that this sunscreen does not contain nasty chemicals, however it wasn't for me. I suggest getting the smallest size to try first.
