The car broke down on 31st December. My partner who is disabled relies on the car to get about. We contacted RST Breakdown about towing the car as it was left in a potentially unsafe position. They quoted £160. £80 was to be paid up front with the remaining £80 to be paid upon completion. I paid the initial £80 online and received a receipt for this. So far, no issues.

When the breakdown driver arrived, he informed that the remaining £80 had to be paid by cash only and to him. He also claimed he didn't have the means to accept online payments. The RST website says "Card Terminal, Bank Transfer or Cash once job completed". There is nothing on their website, or within the agreement I made for their services, to suggest that any part of the payment for services must be by cash only. There was also no suggestion that the second part of the payment would also be made to a third party. It was my understanding that upon completion of the job, I would be sent a link to pay the remainder online.

The driver also claimed that I had to pay by cash only because if I paid online, then he would have to add VAT which he also claimed was an additional £20. 20% of £80 is £16, not £20. He also claimed that if I paid by card, he would have to pay VAT as well.

Due to the circumstances and urgency, I reluctantly agreed to pay the remainder by cash.

After the job was completed, I requested a receipt. The driver claimed he couldn't provide me with one because he would have to add VAT to it. VAT should have already been part of the quote and price. Despite my requests, he refused to provide me with a receipt.

Whilst businesses aren't legally required to provide receipts, they are legally required if one is requested. Refusing one upon request is illegal.

To rub salt into the wounds, the driver revealed that the job was only £80. The initial £80 went to someone else just for agreeing to the service. I was quoted £160 for the service of having the car towed. There is nothing on their website, or within the agreement made, to suggest that any part of the payment agreed and made had nothing to do with the actual service. This was very misleading. Had I been aware that the job was only £80, I would not have agreed to pay £160.

I contacted RST, raised my concerns and requested a refund. They read this and initially failed to reply so I had to chase them up. They denied most of what took place but, perhaps inadvertently, admitted to a particular action which is illegal. I replied to inform them that the driver, and by extension them for hiring the sub-contractor, have operated illegally. They have not replied since.

I have screenshots and have reported them to HMRC for tax fraud.

I strongly recommend that this business isn't used due to their misleading, dishonest and illegal practices.

Had 3 recovery trucks sent to me before I was recovered, seem to send different ones from different companies wouldn’t recommend unless you want to get ripped off

I needed my broken down car recovered and they did just that.

Car wouldn’t start in a car park. Rang RST to help. Said it sounds like I needed a jumpstart. Said it would be 30 minutes for recovery to attend. I paid the initial £40 deposit (£80 in total). 30 minutes later, still no recovery. I rang back to tell him no one had attended like promised. He said the recovery man had to go and get his recovery vehicle and would be another 20 minutes and is now on his way. I said I agreed to use your services and paid £40 deposit on the terms recovery would be here within 30 minutes as promised. He kept me on the phone saying “I’ll contact the driver” then came back to me saying “the driver is 15 minutes away now”. THE DRIVER IS NOW 15 MINUTES AWAY BECAUSE YOU ARE KEEPING ME ON THE PHONE! I asked him to cancel the call and refund me for a service I paid for but never received. I asked for an immediate refund which the call handler agreed to yet I am yet to receive it so have to dispute this with my bank. Tried calling RST again and shock horror they are not answering my call. AVOID. NOT INTERESTED IN HELPING, JUST RIPPING OFF VULNERABLE PEOPLE IN NEED.

I had an excellent experience with RST Breakdown Service! The team arrived promptly and handled my car with great care. Their professionalism and friendly attitude made a stressful situation much easier. The pricing was fair, and there were no hidden fees. I highly recommend their service for anyone in need of reliable and efficient towing!

My Golf R vehicle broke down in ongard. Needed it recovered to Enfield and called RST Breakdown Recovery in Enfield. After a quick conversation. I was quoted. Paid a deposit and the driver arrived within 35 minutes.

The driver was profissional and friendly.

Within two hours I was home with my vehicle.

I needed a quick tow and googled towing services near me. RST popped up, and after a check over their website I made a phone call. Just for reference here, their website in multiple places talks about "their" dedicated team and "their" experienced recovery drivers. I had no key for the vehicle, and it was explained to me that specialist equipment would be required - some kind of skates to get the car onto the vehicle. I was quoted £220. When the recovery driver came he actually had not been given an accurate description of the job and didn't have the equipment needed. He proceeded to wedge a piece of plastic into the door and forced a large branch through the gap to press the handle and unlock the door. This took some time, but he was eventually able to get in and release the handbrake in order to get the car in the truck. On the journey, the driver informed me that RST do not actually have their own drivers and that they essentially call local towing services and hire them to do the jobs. He was shocked at what I had been charged due to the fact that they were only paying him £110 and had even bartered him down to that price from his original quote to them. Once the job was done I contacted RST to complain, I felt that they had been extremely dishonest, and as they told me that special equipment was needed and ultimately was not used, I didn't feel as though the price I had paid had been fair. Their polite attitude quickly changed. They made excuse after excuse, tried to tell me that I was lying in what I'd said and would send me phone recordings - I never received these. I had initially spoken to Daniel who was helpful to begin, but quickly turned rude and unhelpful after I complained. The manager Michael was no better, promising to address my concerns via email which never came even after I chased them up. Messages are now going ignored and unread. They even sent me the email address of another customer claiming I had provided that to them, when I let them know I had no idea what email address that was and that I was concerned about their lack of awareness for GDPR laws they went very quiet. I would highly recommend not using RST. Absolutely horrendous customer service claiming to be something they are not. Essentially they are making money from people by making phone calls and hiring genuine companies to do the real work.
Within an hour of posting a google review I was contacted by RST. They claimed to have spoken to the recovery driver and that he said that what I claimed was untrue. I conacted the recovery driver myself who explained that they had not actually spoken to the RST since the job, and was not willing to work with them again. I recieved multiple messages calling me abusive when in reality I am an angry, displeased customer. Daniel told me they are not happy with my Google review, to which I explained that I had given them opportunity to resolve my issues and they had not. I will never use this company again, in my opinion it is completely not genuine and they will lie over and over.

Contact was maintained throughout my breakdown period. I was never left wondering what was going on, they kept in contact with me until I was dropped off at my local garage.
