They really are a shambles
Last April I put in a claim for higher tax relief on my personal pension. They contacted me to say they needed a few more details which I sent and then waited. By November I'd heard nothing so contacted them and was told I'd get a reply by December. January I called again to be told it had been missed but they'd put it on priority and I would get a letter in 10 days. 10 days later and no letter so I called again and told they had no idea why they had not picked it up so they'd ask for a follow up and give them another 10 days. 10 days later nothing so called and told they were actually working on it now so just give them a week. A week later and nothing so called again (all these calls took 30 to 40 mins to speak to someone and very frustrating) on this call I was told all was good but they wanted one sentence added so they could process....I explained I did what was asked of me 40 weeks ago and in all that time no one sent anything else to say please add a further sentence. She said it's all we need and then can process it for you, I replied with ok I'll do that now but how long to process that and I was told they were getting more people in so time has reduced from 48 weeks to 40 weeks!..I gave up at this point and said keep the money I'm done and you've beaten me. The last thing I said was could I speak to a supervisor and I was told she would get someone to call me......Still waiting.
Disappointed with service
When the security questions were asked in the middle of the phone call!- I failed one because they asked for my P45 pay to date amount and apparently this did not match what the advisor had in front of them- on checking my account on line I have now realised this was because the amount they had in front of them included the taxable part of a lump sum payment- however I told the advisor i received the P45 before the lump sum so maybe they should have listened! So advisor would not speak to me any further- not at all helpful! Maybe if the tax office could tax things correctly in first place they wouldn't have so many people ringing them up! Disappointed with service.

Absolutely Shocking service, I am an agent and as an agent expect a helpful response as to why its taking so long to make my clients repayment! The woman spoke over me and all I could hear was a busy call centre in the background, very bad signal, she refused to have a conversation with me until I had done the online checker as to "when can i expect a response" I tried to explain there was a hold on my clients account last year and to check this hasn't happened again!! but she refused to listen and said she was following a guide!! Absolutely disgusted

If I could leave no stars I would have. Wasted a full day on the phone, absolutely incompetent customer service, they don’t know what there talking about so they just disconnect the call. I may start identifying as a boat person so I no longer have to pay tax and receive handouts instead.

They make so difficult to use,even my simple tax assessment form,for a retired person,I did manage to get them to accept the information they requested, told me to sign off,with a code they gave me,on closing it down,felt happy to achieved something, only to find out that when I did sign back in,they wanted to start again.
What Prats,but I did manage to do it online for simple assessment form with my code number on my computer, via my Lloyd's personal account, but still waiting for them to take it out,luckily enough I've got a copy via my computer.

There is no email support available to contact. The phone support also doesn’t respond—after a very long waiting time, there is still no answer. They apply penalties, but there is no proper support to understand or resolve any issues.

I have always considered government websites very easy to use, when paying in. The day is dawning where I’m at the age of qualifying for state pension. I am wanting to know what I’m entitled to. Tried numerous times with gov gateway Id. passport, driving licence . Nothing, not allowing me to access. Why is it so difficult, I feel like I’m going after something, I’m not entitled to😞

The woman who answered my call didn’t even introduce herself and just breathed heavily for about 15-20 seconds until i spoke. Her english was very poor and i was barely able to understand what she was saying. We spent 5 minutes establishing that my surname is Brown and not Prown……… Once i was through security she was unable to address my question and kept repeating the same rubbish so i just hung up. I have had to ring HMRC about 6 times during my 22 years of life and only once the service was good. unbelievable.

They maybe nice people, but their mats are weak. According to hmrc 2-1=2. And 20 percent of 50 equals 1700. I have this in writing :D What a way to run a tax office :D

Shocking, incompetent staff. Waiting over hour to get through only to be told by a member of staff,iam knot trained in that and hung up on us. They also had my address wrong and were sending my documents to someone else. Total failure of a government organisation.

Today at HMRC call I had an issue solved by a member of staff Mohammad Zaeed. His detail of targetting the issue in a pront and efficent way left me a happy costumer. I have to say HMRC have improved in their staff comunication and waiting time ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This Government and past need held accountable for causing financial loss to working individials
I can never get through to HMRC on the phone, no matter what time of day I call. Instead, I’m forced onto an HMRC app that constantly crashes or refuses to let me log in. I’m then pushed to use yet another app to “prove” who I am using passport chips and facial recognition, yet none of these systems work together. Half the time they don’t work at all, and the rest of the time I’m told everything is down for maintenance.
After spending many wasted hours trying to make contact, it’s clear this system is not designed for working-class families. People who work full-time, juggle jobs, childcare, and bills do not have endless hours to battle broken systems just to stay compliant. Despite this, HMRC has no problem issuing late payment penalties to honest, hard-working people who are actively trying to do the right thing.
Taxpayers are being punished for failures entirely outside their control. This is not just an IT failure — it is an administrative and political failure. The political system that oversees and funds HMRC has allowed essential public services to deteriorate to this level while continuing to enforce penalties with no accountability.
This raises a serious question: is this simply incompetence, or is it a deliberate setup to extract more money from people through fines and penalties when HMRC’s own systems don’t work?
Working people are fed up with being ignored, blamed, and squeezed for failures they did not create. Enough is enough.

What a total waste of time. Unhelpful staff with poor English speaking abilities. Then want me to spend time posting evidence and information when I’m giving them a business name and employer who is committing tax/No fraud !!
