Cream tea

Booked cream tea to enjoy with a friend. Enjoyed the steam train experience, but was disappointed with the cream tea. The scones and cake were already on the plate and table before boarding(not hygienic, my opinion). No table cloth to make it look pleasant. Scones were cheap out of a packet, really small. Cake not appetising. Tea and coffee were given only for the outward journey. Once got back in the train at Leicester, cups had been cleared away. This experience cost £40 really not worth the money at all. There was a lady to help and guide who was very friendly at all times.

Bought for monther's 90th birthday...so dissapointed

Bought for Mother's 90th birthday. A trip of nostalgia on a steam train. Only no steam train. Just a bog standard old ,tired looking diesel train. Understand reason for not having the steam train due to risk of bush fires (could be caused by spark from engine), BUT should have been notified beforehand and offered alternative date. Scones were nice. But take note, you only get 2 cups of tea or coffee, one in each direction! And you use the same cup so make sure you drink up all the first cup or you end up having a top up onto cold tea! We did ask for more but told had to wait for return trip! The scenery was also a disappointment. Just repeated green fields with a jumble of abandoned trains, burnt out carriages + grafitti along the side. Not views of the beautiful Kent countryside we had been expecting. And as train just goes backwards on return, you see the same scenery again! And didnt help being a very hot day. They did warn us in an email beforehand (with recommendation to wear appropriate clothing!), and wouldnt let us on train until it was just about to leave because so hot. It was unbearable. We took 4 electric hand fans with us but still wasnt enough. It felt like a long painfully slow boring journey. and the driver seemed to be fond of testing his emergency stop! Lucky didnt end up with a lap full of hot tea. oh no, silly me, cup only had cold tea so we were safe! And when disembarking, mobile steps were provided but big gap between the mobile unit and train step which my mother had to nervously attempt to use. Wouldnt recommend, but all staff at station and on train were lovely. It was everything else that let them down. All felt quite amateurish.

Fish and Chips steam train journey from Pickering to Whitby.

This was a fish and chips excursion to Whitby on the North York Moors Railway steam railway. Olly Fox greeted us at Pickering Station and was very friendly and welcoming. He kept us well informed throughout the journey and worked hard to ensure everyone was happy and well fed.
The fish and chips were a real success and we thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Care more about money than customer satisfaction

Booked the Fish & Chip train at Ecclesbourne Railway (Wirksworth) as a gift for my husband for Father’s Day, having thoroughly enjoyed this last year. This year was sadly a complete and utter travesty. The train was clearly booked out for a variety of different options, cream teas, afternoon teas as well as fish and chips. Some 20 minutes after the train should have departed staff were still bringing afternoon teas on board, though no explanation of this or advice that we would be late departing was provided.
We were shocked when a couple sat down opposite us with their cockerdoodle medium sized dog! There was also a larger golden retriever dog in our carriage too. The dog was expected to sit beneath the table, amongst 4 adults’ legs (2 of which were total strangers). Bearing in mind the temperatures on the day of our trip were in the 20’s, I was surprised anyone even thought it was appropriate to bring dogs out, let alone cram them beneath a table on a train for an hour and a half. The dog continually sat on our feet, leant against our legs and was generally (understandably) unsettled.
When we arrived in Duffield and collected our fish and chips, they were presented in styrofoam boxes in plastic bags, along with 2 flapjack bars and 2 small plastic bottles of water. The water was warm from having been stored with the hot food and the food had sweated from being in plastic bags for the half an hour we had been delayed.
But worse was yet to come, opening the boxes the food was completely inedible. The batter on the fish was so thick the inside was a layer of uncooked paste, the fish was not completely cooked through and nor were the chips. Although the couple opposite and on the other side all complained about the quality of the food, we were the only ones who spoke to the Representative on the train Jacqui, showing her the food and advising it was inedible. She confirmed the food was undercooked having seen it and advised us to contact the company via email.
I sent an email immediately and received a reply a few days later.
The company advised the policy is only 1 dog per train (I don’t know if they meant carriage, but the wording was train). There were several dogs all boarded our train. They advised the couple sitting opposite us had not booked their dog onto the train, but offered no reason why this wasn’t checked or why we were expected to be uncomfortable for the entire journey because of it.
They apologised for the quality of the food, but advised it was the same company they had used previously, which we had enjoyed… they refunded us £30 by means of a gesture of goodwill. The trip in total cost over £80, so we replied thanking them for the gesture, but politely requesting a full refund but have to date received no reply.
This was a truly awful experience, cramped in a table with a stranger’s dog on a hot sunny day, with truly inedible food and a luke warm bottle of water each. We will not be returning to Ecclesbourne railway and would advise anyone against wasting their time and money, as clearly Fox and Edwards who manage the food trains care more about money than customer satisfaction.

The fox and edwards steam train from Brechin

We went on the fox and edwards fish and chips caledonian train from Brechin, Angus. This was a Christmas gift and we had a lovely time. The fish and chips were great, we were also given a bottle of water and also a large flapjack ( lemon one and an original tasting one) we were so full after the fish and chips we took them home and had them later. The train stopped at Bridge of Dun for 15 minutes to allow you time to leave the train and go to the toilet if needed as there is no toilet on the train. All the staff were very helpful and knowledgeable. Cameron was very cheerful. The whole trip was an hour and we saw the beautiful open countryside.

Definitely NOT worth the money!

I bought a steam train ride with a cream tea from Bishops Lydeard Station to Minehead as a Christmas present for my wife. We drove an hour and 40 Minutes and were greeted by a lovely, friendly lady called Sarah. She told us which seats we would be sitting in. When we got to our allocated seats, it became apparent that we would be sharing our table with two other people. At no point on the website, when booking this trip (which was not cheap at all! Over £100 including a cheap box of biscuits), did it state that we would be sitting opposite two strangers for the 200-minute return trip and having to eat in front of them. (Luckily, our companions were very lovely and we got on great) We spoke to Sarah about this, and she said that they couldn't take up two carriages in case the train got busy! I believe that it has more to do with the fact that Fox & Edwards would have to pay the railway more money for a 2nd carriage, and this would eat into their massive profit. I say this because the cream tea consisted of 2 cheap shop-bought scones, two small pots of Rhodders Clotted cream (one would have been enough) and a small pot of cheap jam, which was definitely not enough for two scones! (The couple we were sharing with agreed) On the website, it also stated unlimited tea and coffee, and yet we were only given 1 cup of tea or coffee each. I think you should either pay for another carriage or at least make it clear on the website that you will have to share a table with strangers. At least this way you will have a choice.

There was also a member of staff called Denise, and from the beginning of the Journey to the end, she was very loud and abrupt towards some of the passengers who asked her questions, including my wife, and sadly, this is not a good representation for Fox & Edwards.

The gentleman (I believe was called Dave) was lovely and had a bit of a joke with us.

I would NOT recommend this, as I feel it is very overpriced, misleading with the seating, and some of the staff should have some extra customer service training.

And that is how little they care....they didn't even respond to this review!!

Great steam train trip with fish and chips too !

Sunday 21st June - actually Fathers’ Day but I didn’t realise when I booked but this was a present for my sister’s 70th birthday. We had a really great time - we were able to park in the car park at North Weald station - Epping & Ongar steam railway. Weather was lovely and warm - everyone was happy - the staff who run these events and the volunteers who look after the railway. We had a beautiful shiny steam train , the Cornishman , we took loads of pictures before, during and after the train ride - we stopped halfway for the best and hottest tastiest fish and chips! Also a bottle of water each and a cherry flapjack. Very filling. I would thoroughly recommend this company - so well organised and kept us up to date all the way right up to the day before . Would definitely use this company again. Thank you for a great day! My sister really loved it. So did I.

East Somerset Steam Railway Paddington Bear Experience.

The Staff both young and more mature where very friendly and helpful, the whole experience worked really well for us as a family group of 4 adults and a 2.5 year and 9 year old children. We arrived and parked in the grass car park where we enjoyed our picnic whilst listening to the train whistle, the railway station and carriages plus the steam engine took us back in time and we all loved it, especially the children. Meeting Paddington was friendly and a good photo opportunity, we also enjoyed the shop and the ride on the miniature railway which is included in the price. Thankyou to the team.

Our trip was on the Blaenavon steam…avoid wasting your money booking fox&Edwards

Our trip was on the Blaenavon steam railway. The actual steam railway and the various model steam railways on show were excellent. The short journey was not very exciting and lasted around 45 minutes.
The biggest issue was the food. The fish was impossible to eat. My grandchildren couldn’t/ wouldn’t eat it. There was too much batter and very little fish, plus it was impossible to cut with a wooden knife.
I did complain on the train to the Fox&Edwards member of staff who at that point was getting complaints from other passengers.
I contacted head office and was basically told they were sorry the fish was not to your liking
Like many other people avoid this company

Llangollen and Corwen Railway

We enjoyed a steam train trip on the Llangollen and Corwen Railway. This was a Christmas gift and we thoroughly enjoyed the trip with lovely views over the Dee valley. The carriage was very clean and the fish and chips were very tasty. Becky was a great host ensuring everything was well organised. The chap on the train whose name I can’t recall gave us some interesting facts about the history of the railway. All in all a lovely day out.

After the trip our taxi never turn up and the lovely hostess that was on the train with us took us back to the Birch hotel. The ladies name is Samantha, she really did go one step beyond.

Waste of £140

Paid £140 for premium compartment where you would think being a Paddington train ride you would see Paddington on the train but no started in east Dereham drove 10 mins up the road to Thuxton then had to sit at train station for half hour making our entertainment while the train turned around to go back in total your on the train for 20mins then you get off the train and have to queue for half hour to take a picture with Paddington , everything was very rushed like rushed to get on the train then get off so the next group can go , if you value money don’t do this journey it’s a waste of money and a lot better train experiences around , train was dirty and had food all over it from the previous train ride so I would say they should separate the rides and not try cram as many in one day as they can and spend abit of time between each ride to clean the train won’t be using this company again like money but not customers

Don’t believe their advert - small, dirty train travelling in the middle of nowhere…

Don’t waste your money on the Bo’ness journey - they have the cheek to advertise a beautiful steam train travelling across a viaduct for this particular journey - I should report them to trade descriptions act. Dirty train, soggy fish n chips, no view at all to speak of. The train was the one used for the children on their Thomas the Tank engine journeys ! I bought this for my dads 80th quite frankly embarrassing for all involved. £85 badly spent sadly.
