Joined C25 when a new group opened in my area. Have enjoyed every meet up. Made some amazing friends and attended lots of book events. Books can be hit or miss but that’s kinda the point. Have read genres I wouldn’t normally have picked up. If you are on the fence about joining - join now you are gonna love it 🫶🏼

Chapter25 Dundee Vol2 book club

I love my book club
I love my book club. It was so easy to sign up to and the people are so welcoming. It’s my favourite night of the month! It’s a way of branching out of your comfort zone and reading books you’d never usually pick up and I love that. There’s constantly events going on and meet ups, it’s perfect for anyone who feels like they would like to make friends who share the same love for books as you!

Chapter 25 is very welcoming and creates a really friendly and open environment. The book selection is great and I have read so many more genres that I never considered before, not only that but the recommendations made by the group have done wildly unhealthy things to my tbr not that I'm complaining!

Amazing!

AVOID - can't even get a Welcome email from them
I can't comment on the book club meet ups themselves as I haven't yet been to one but I can say that the customer service is dire. I signed up and received a "payment received email" telling me to get in touch if I hadn't received a welcome email within 48 hours. Well, guess what? No email received (and all spam etc checked). I then emailed to say I was still waiting, no response to that email. A few days later I chased again, and STILL no response (plus I noted the automated "thanks for your email" I got said to not re-email them as it puts your request back to the bottom of the queue!). So, nearly 10 days after they took my money, with now only 3 days to the local meeting from the little information I can glean from the website. I have no idea what the book is and no chance to read it which means that even if they do get back in touch, this months membership fee has been a complete waste of time. I am going to have to ask my bank to do a charge back for services not received and ask them to block all future payments to this company (as it sounds like cancelling is a nightmare - if I even can do that given that they are not responding to my emails to even get started with the club). ***Absolutely shocking service***. It is a real shame as I am laid up for 12 weeks with a foot injury and I was really looking forward to doing something sociable locally.

i'm sorry to hear about your injury - I truly hope your recovery is going well.
We do want to clarify the timeline around your emails. You contacted us on Saturday 29th August, and then followed up again on Wednesday 2nd September, before we had an opportunity to respond to your original email. Our response time is 2–3 working days, and emails received over the weekend are worked through from the following Wednesday in line with this response time.
As noted in our automated response, replying to an existing support email does unfortunately move the request back to the end of the queue, which is why the additional email meant that your request was pushed back.
We did respond to you on 4th September and confirmed that your welcome emails had all been sent on the day you signed up. We also provided links and instructions to help you get started in case the original emails couldn’t be located, including checking spam and junk folders.
We’re sorry that you had difficulty locating the welcome information and that the process felt so frustrating. If you still need any help getting set up, please email our support team and we’ll be happy to help you get everything sorted.

Predatory contract, poor experience
I did not enjoy the experience. Too many people in the book chat group, boring book choices, steep price when the book isn’t even included in the membership- or the drinks or food at the venue. I also couldn’t cancel- I had to continue paying for three months worth of membership even though I was unhappy with the service, as this is the “minimum commitment.” Being trapped in a contract when there is a waiting list of people who want to sign up does not make sense to me.

We recognise that reading is personal, so for the monthly book itself, members can choose how they’d like to read it — whether that’s buying a physical copy, borrowing it from a library, listening to the audiobook or reading on Kindle. We do offer discounts at HarperCollins and Libro.FM to help with book costs.
The membership also helps support the hosts and staff behind Chapter 25, who put a huge amount of time and care into creating the community, events and experiences we offer.
We’re also sorry that you were unhappy with the three-month minimum commitment. This is clearly outlined in our Terms & Conditions, as well as on every club’s sign-up page before joining, so members are aware of the commitment at the point of signing up. We understand that this may be frustrating if you decide the club isn’t the right fit for you.
That said, we genuinely appreciate you giving Chapter 25 a try and being part of our community, and we’re sorry that your experience didn’t meet your expectations.

No seats!
Member for over a year, venue changed temporarily and not even enough seats were booked! Left straight away because I didn’t have a seat. Contacted them to ask for a refund and to cancel (I’m paying £10 a month, a seat is the least I expect) and was refused - apparently 20 seats were booked to match the poll of who was going, ha 21 people said they were going and 1 person had said maybe, so was already underbooked! There were only 13 seats on the night and all full when I got there for starting time. Was told to sit in unbooked tables or drag over a chair, absolute joke.

Increases variety of reading but late meetings and dear for what you get. Overall good fun, but think it could be better
Meetings are very late in the evening, which means I only usually stay for half of it. Enjoy meeting the others and having the challenge of trying various genres and the host on the night makes it a fun experience, but I think it is expensive for what it is as you buy the books yourself and then have to obviously get transport to the venue and back. I appreciate we pay for venue hire - in our case a lively wine bar - but we could pay £20 a week in total for a church hall,BYOB and it would be just as fun. I really appreciate the way it makes me read new books which I wouldn’t normally choose so that means overall it’s a more positive than negative experience but I think if I had the willpower I could do that myself? Late meetings are a hassle though and I hope this gets changed soon to an earlier slog. Finishing at 10pm to get buses is not ideal and most of the attendees are women so perhaps feel more nervous - also it’s a work night so doubly difficult.

Great way to spend an evening.
Have been a member of the Belfast Volume 2 book club from the start (February 25). Look forward to it every month. A little bit of me time. Enjoy the different genres. Have met and made new friends. Our host Ellen is the best, so friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend.
