ABSURD amount of info for a part number
I called the technical assistance number listed in the manual. I asked to get a part NUMBER for the anode rod on a water heater. They required I provide them with name, address, phone number, location in the house of the water heater, serial number, model number, and who installed it. This amount of information is ABSURD to get a part number for a non warranty part. Anode rod can be bought at a local hardware store. After multiple conversations, I was told it was due to gas regulations. Not true. I called a supply distributor and ordered the part before even being asked my name. Ao smith kept referring me by a name I stopped using (get this) 33 YEARS ago. When asked where they got the name, they refused. No need to wonder how my identity was hacked.

Purchased a Natural gas hw heater from Lowes with a 6 yr.warranty. Working in the industry for 30 yrs. I installed it myself and maintained it regularly ! After less than 3 yrs, the water I regularly drained from it began to show rust and showed leakage in the drain pan ! Warranty staff instructed me to remove it and return to Lowes for replacement and pay the difference in cost !!!! REALLY !! Keep your warranty ! I'll never buy your products again !!
Bad warranty and low quality control
I purchased and installed an AO Smith Signature 100 water heater in June 2022. About a year later, the electric panel circuit braker started to trigger, causing the water to go cold. After contacting an electrician and conducting a review, it was determined the water heater was defective. I went to the manufacture's website and contacted one of their approved technical support companies. I called New York Cooling Corporation (843) 458-1302 for warranty service. After verifying some information about the heater, the representative informed me the service was not covered under warranty, only the parts. The warranty flat fee was $250, parts would be covered. I agreed and scheduled an appointment for the following Friday, the first opening available. On Friday late in the afternoon, I texted the technician who then informed me he was not going to be able to come to service the unit because his previous job had taken longer than anticipated. Finally, when the water heater was serviced, the upper heating element was 100% corroded and malfunctioned. It is IMPOSSIBLE the heating element would be in this condition in only one year of use, which makes me come to the conclusion this was a poorly refurbished water heater that I paid as new. Unfortunately, this is not a reliable product, lacking good warranty service and has poor quality control.

Water heater is less than 3 months old and it will not let the hot water be of any temperature other than "ULTRA HOT". Called AO Smith and they will cover up to 100 dollars for a plumber to come out to replace the control. We paid over 750 dollars for this piece of crap and apparently it is only worth 100 dollars. The people I spoke with were very nice but could not do anything for us except say do you want to speak to a supervisor. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING THIS COMPANY SELLS OR MAKES!!! As far as sending this to AO Smith they just don't give a @#$% about either their reputation or the customer. Hope what happened to Bud Light happens to AO Smith.
8 months and leaking
8 months in and the pressure relief valve is leaking. Wont cover under warranty. Total trash tank and customer service is another joke of its own.
purchased an A.O. Smith Water Heater
purchased an A.O. Smith hot water heater on 7/21/2023. Water would not get hot. On 7/22/2023 was told by support to replace upper thermostat and upper heat element water is now warm, still no hot water. Was then told by support to replace the lower heat element, which was done and still only warm water. I will swallow my loses and purchase a reputable hot water heater and get it installed. I will also no longer do any business with Lowe's who sold me this piece of junk.

WORSE Company with support, first you are treated like you are stupid, then when you show that you actually know what is going on, they find every excuse to not support you or provide technical support, I bought a Hybrid Water Heater, the unit will ALWAYS use one of the elements, regardless of the settings (support basically quoted me the manual, yet, still uses one element even on heat pump setting) then they basically told me there is no way I would know...like I dont have a home energy meter that monitors circuits...it is 2023, anyone with solar knows we can monitor energy usage.... then I told them that the "time of use" is useless as the whole point someone will use it is so the heater only works during low rate hours, well....it does not, it will turn in ANYTIME... here, I was told again, to read the manual and that there was an "error" in the marketing, yeah, the main reason to buy this heater... then I was told to put the heater on vacation mode or just use a timer (like the one I had with my previous heater that cost 1/3 of the price, so this "smart" unit will be render useless with a timer. At this point since they refuse to actually acknowledge the issues I send them an email with a line full of sarcasm.... " I bet the next CSR will ask me to make sure my Heater is plugged in the wall" there the magic happened, next email ignored my issues and I was told that I am REQUIRED to submit a picture of my heater (that was installed by a professional from Mr Rooter) to ensure it was installed properly and MUST show that it does not have a plug going into the wall...really!!! if I do not comply, my technical support will not be honored....yup, they did not read all my requests, but used a sarcasm line to find a loophole to not admit that the unit does not work as advertised!!! Save your money, buy a Rheem as these people could have had a great unit, but they literally do not care for their customers ...watch how they reply with a generic answer cut and paste from a manual just like they did at the LOWES website, to act like the unit is ok and I am just stupid

I wish I could give ZERO stars. This product is JUNK and "customer service" is a joke. Don't hold your breath for a labor auth code for that "1 year labor coverage"!!! I was told that they count from the manufactured date, not the actual installation date. So apparently AO Smith built my tank right in my basement last year since mfr date was 5/22.
My home warranty company installed a GCR 40 400 model as a replacement for my Rheem in November 2022. I was not consulted about brands. I'm sure they picked the cheapest option. By May '23, the pilot was going out multiple times a day. Had a plumber come out & check it, was advised that the control unit was bad. Control unit was changed & guess what? STILL no hot water! Plumber came out again, advised that the pilot burner unit was bad. I called tech support to have them ship me the part and was promised "overnight" shipping. 2 days later, NO part has arrived--called tech support again and was told that the part isn't in stock.
So far, I have spent $500+ on service calls since May, not counting the upcoming burner installation labor. I could have bought a new tank with that money but instead I'm stuck heating water for cleaning and bathing while the AO SMITH company who actually manufactures the part I need tells me they don't know when they will have it.

These water heaters don't last long! Within 9 years I went through 2 units with 1 being an expensive Hybrid. My son also went through 3 units within 8 years. The sad part is that they tell you they have 6-10 years of warranty, but fail to mention that when your first unit goes, that original warranty carries over to the next. So the replaced unit has the remainder of the original purchase. (Example original purchased unit, 6 years warranty. The unit goes after 3 years, the replaced unit gets the remaining 3 years.) This sucks because now you will lose the remaining 7 years warranty on the replaced unit if it's a 10 year warranty. Customer service is lousy in trying to resolve the issue. Their solution is to purchase an extended warranty every time you get a replacement. For these reasons I nor my son will ever purchase another AO Smith product or recommend anyone to do so.
As for AO Smith, you should honor the full warranty,(not the rollover), if you have faith in you products!

Be advised before you purchase an A.O. Smith hot water heater! Our $1000, A. O. Smith GCRL 40 400 residential hot water heater failed just 14 months outside of the 6 year warranty period. The leaking heater tank trickled 120 gallons of water to our basement floor before it was discovered. Speaking with a ground level customer service, and a manager, each stated A. O. Smith would offer no relief in the matter repeatedly stating "we abide by our warranty period", and, "there's nothing we can do". A. O. Smith is not the premium, reliable durable goods / appliance manufacturer to spend your money on in our experience, because their product failed far prior to a reasonable life expectancy, and they offered zero empathy, consideration, or flexibility toward offering any type of relief or support in our case.
Leaky Water Heater
I will be joining the chorus of other dissatisfied A.O. Smith customers who purchased one of their water heaters. After just 4 years, the water heater was leaking and in calling the manufacturer, they indicated that it was defective and I got an RA#. Initially, they were only going to give my a two year warranty on the new water heater but Lowe's did manage to give me the full 6 year warranty. It amazes me that Lowe's would continue to carry such a poorly made product. Suffice to say that if this second water heater fails, I am done with A.O. Smith and will find a more reputable company to do business with. I really can't recommend A.O. Smith to anyone.

Very disappointed. Had to replace $2200 water heater couple wks after 6 yr warranty matured. My plumber mentioned it definitely failed and was surprised at its condition. A highly regarded company I believewould have stood by its product and offered me some form of reimbursementment.

A 2016 water heater failed in our house in 2021. It was replaced, but the replacement is now broken less than 2 years later! The company says it's "out of warranty" because the original purchase date was 2016. They do not stand behind their products and are a scam of a company.

We have had an absolutely awful experience with A.O. Smith.
I bought a 50 Gallon Electric Series 100 water heater from Lowe's in Tacoma, WA.
This was bought on Feb 4th, 2023. We got a small amount of water that was warm, but after that first shower, none returned. We called AO Smith, and they said that they do not have agreements with anyone in the area to service, so they would reimburse $150 (plumbers/electricians won't even show up for that).
I called and asked for a supervisor; one called me back but left no phone number or name. So, I called back, on Friday, Feb 10th, and was promised someone would call me back by the end of the day. No one did.
I called Saturday, Feb 11th, and was promised I was next in line for a supervisor. No one called me back. But, I did email them photos of where the unit was poorly manufactured.
The wire connecting the upper and lower thermostat had exposed wire and burned out the thermostat unit. Was told by authorities that this fault could have electrocuted someone (if it was mid-cycle) and potentially burned the house down.
I called twice on Sunday, Feb 12th. I finally talked to a supervisor named Keith who was incredibly rude and told me he would reimburse the $150 if I took the water heater back out and took it to Lowes.
Even with this information, I was not able to get a call from a supervisor. I emailed the CEO on Sunday, Feb 12th, and have yet to get a response (doubt I will).
Because the 6-year warranty has not expired, Lowe's will not honor the extended warranty that I paid for.
I wondered if I was an abnormal case, but, seems like based on the reviews that I am seeing, this company is doing an awful job when it comes to customer service.

The a o smith guc-40--400 water heater flashes 6 times saying to replace burner and gas valve but the warranty expires on manufacture date not install date which does not make sense. I use to love this line of water heater & mine lasted 20 years. Now they only last about six years before problems start happening. Being a plumber I have switched over to Bradford White water heaters.
