Never Buy a A.O. Smith Water Heater
I bought a new house with two 50 gal A.O. Smith Water Heaters in Oct., 2021.
By July, 2023, both water heaters had to be replaced. Both tanks were under warranty, but I had to pay the labor charge over $500 each. After 17 mos, another of the tanks had to be replaced. Again, they will not cover the labor charge even though none of the tanks have lasted more than 19 months. Either there is an issue with this model of water heater, or A.O Smith builds unreliable, cheap, pieces of junk. Regardless, they will not stand by their product. AVOID!!!!

Lousy company to deal with along with their distributer lowes ripped me off for 900.00 for a descaler and water filter do not stand behind their product and lowes does not want to deal with it either if i could give -5 stars i would
Our commercial grade hot water heater…
Our commercial grade hot water heater burner assembly stopped working in August 2024. It is now December, 2024. The wrong parts were sent twice. 4 months of waiting from someone in parts department to return phone calls. Requested numerous times for a parts supervisor to get correct parts sent. Now, customer service wants us to pull the defective part from the hot water heater, take pictures, upload them to send to their company email address. HOPEFULLY, it should get forwarded to somebody in the correct department. 4 months without hot water when I can get the part from Amazon within 48 hours.
BEWARE - DON'T BUY A.O. SMITH WATER HEATERS
I just had a 40 gal A. O. Smith gas water heater fail after only 2 years and almost flooded my attic and below. Prior to this I had issues with the pilot light not staying lit. I had to pay to have the replacement water heater reinstalled. Original warranty is applied to the new hot water heater so I still have to pay for install if it fails again anytime because the labor warranty is only 1 yr and is up. I have never seen a tank fail like this one with water coming out of the top of the tank like a fountain. I called A.O. Smith and they were apologetic, but weren't interested in helping to ease my concerns about a potential failure on the replacement water heater and though they agreed that the tank shouldn't have failed, they basically weren't willing to do anything to reassure or compensate me. I worked for a national retailer for 15 years handling hot water heater sales and installation and never saw a tank failure like this one. I wouldn't recommend A. O. Smith to anyone. Had I not been home when it failed, I would have had a very expensive mess on my hands. Be careful, because they also manufacture other brands, so a quick online search will list out the other brands they manufacture. Basically their response was, well this can happen and this is our warranty. When I asked what they do to prevent these failures, I was told that occasionally our engineers try to make improvements, but they don't look at the failed units to find the root cause. I was only looking for either some partial compensation on the install or the one year labor warranty on the replacement water heater so I didn't have to worry about a reinstall at least during the next year, but they said they can't do that either. So I am writing a review on every review site for any company that carries A.O. Smith Water Heaters to hopefully save someone else the headache and unexpected expense. Unfortunately, I am finding as I go on these other sites that this is not that unique of an experience with their water heaters failing and I wished that I had seen some of these other reviews before I purchased the water heater in 2022. Made in the USA is important to me, but it has to be made well and you have to take care of your customers.
Will never buy a A.O. Smith hot water heater again…
Will never buy a hot water heater again from this company. My first water heater lasted about 6 years that was from A.O. Smith brand. The next one was a replacement that lasted 2 years. It leaked from both heating elements and they could not be replaced. Plenty of corrosion. So now I find out that you add the two years of the hot water heater together and that equals six years. You would expect the two year warranty on the second replacement to be a 6-year. But no they add the two hot water heaters together. Plumber went and I paid him $1,500 for a Rheam water heater.
Disaster support team
I am writing to express my extreme frustration and disappointment with the repeated failure of your technical support team to resolve the issues with my water softener. Despite multiple attempts and shipments of replacement parts, the problem persists, and I am still without a functioning water softener.
The issue began 2- 3 months back when I first contacted your technical support team. I was assured that the problem would be resolved quickly and efficiently. However, after multiple phone calls, emails, and shipments of replacement parts, the issue remains unresolved. The most recent shipment of parts received a few weeks but unfortunately, it did not resolve the problem.
The issue is not with the replacement parts, but rather with the inability of your technical support team to identify and address the root cause of the problem. Each time, I am told that the issue is resolved, only to have it reappear shortly after. The most recent response from your team was that I need to reinstall the entire system, which is not only time-consuming but also frustrating, given that I have already done this multiple times.
I request that you escalate this issue to a senior technical support specialist who can review my case and provide a comprehensive solution. I expect a prompt response and a clear plan of action to resolve the issue once and for all.
TECHNICAL SUPPORT Personnels which i talked about today are arrogant and lack your product knowledge and expertise which is a pity we as customers reach to them when we need the support.
Buyer Beware- I purchased a water heater from AO Smith…
I purchased a water heater from AO Smith yesterday and had an unacceptable experience trying to register and complete the warranty process for it.
I'm technically savvy but found their online warranty registration process to be user-hostile, cumbersome (intentionally designed this way?), and more confusing than doing my taxes returns. No matter what correct information I input, I got continual error messages.
Unable to complete the verification online, I phoned their customer service and spoke with an agent asking if she would walk me through the online process. Instead, she asked me some questions regarding the unit model and serial number and announced that she had completed the warranty registration herself for me. I said great, please email or snail mail the confirmation of my warranty to me - and she said no, we don't do that if you register by phone. I insisted - hey, I just bought their hot water heater with a 9 year warranty for peets sake and I need some kind of written confirmation that the warranty is in effect. She gave me a case number to use instead of a written confirmation, I said, so I'm supposed to remember a case number for 9 years?? What recourse would I have if my water heater needs to be repaired in 8 years and AO Smith insists that my case number is invalid? She kept saying, don't worry, it will be valid.
I spent $2500 for their water heater and paid an extra $400 for the 9 year warranty and they refuse to confirm my warranty in writing??
This is a shoddy business practice. I feel cheated, fooled and manipulated by AO Smith. I bought their 9 year warranty for peace of mind, to protect myself financially in case of repairs. Now I feel totally fleeced instead, and angry. This is no way to treat a customer. In the future, instead of recommending AO Smith to others via of word of mouth, I will warn potential customers against buying products from AO Smith.
AO Smith - your customers deserve written confirmations of warranty purchases in writing. NOT a case number!

I reached out to this company to get an answer to a simple question. They had discontinued their Promax model. What model name replaces it as closely as possible. After getting through their voice mail and answering multiple questions, none of which were relevant, the CS Agent could not give me an answer. I requested a supervisor. Could not get one. Totally frustrated. Will be buying Rheem Water Heater.
Don’t purchase from this company
Don’t purchase from this company! My water heater was leaking not even a day old. They didn’t want to refund me the money. I lost 600 dollars. Their customer service is terrible. John Keept yelling and talking over me. Please look into another company all they care about is taking your money and not owning up to there products.

had AO Smith GPVX 75L 210 installed…
had AO Smith GPVX 75L 210 installed 4/2018, 2 weeks after install kept malfunctioning with 8-4 code Valve Fault Detected. My licensed local plumber that did install was not approved AO Smith warranty company. First AO Smith said out of warranty 11/4/2015 build date, I said BS just installed. Warranty company made 4 service call out over 4 month time period, 1st time replace burner, 2nd cut open ceiling AO Smith said vent issue it was Not a Vent Issue, 3rd visit replaced Honeywell module, 4th visit warranty company gave up. it has continued to malfunction. It is going to the garbage. Being replaced with a tankless system that is NOT a AO Smith product.
AO Smith Heater is Junk
We had a Rheem water heater for 13 years with not one single issue. We decided to be proactive and have it replaced before it failed. Unfortunately we were lead to believe AO Smith heaters were the best so that's what we had installed in Oct 2018. Today we just had to spend almost $600 to replace the Burner Assembly. So a little over 5 years after it was installed we're already having to put money into it. And supposedly the parts are covered for 6 years but it's all a scam with the installation plumbing company. It took all of maybe 40 mins to replace the part and we had to pay $568! Not sure exactly what was covered! Stay away from these heaters!
Very disappointed in this company
I am very disappointed in the way this company handled my still-under-warranty issue. My water heater has been used for less than 9 months. After I provided the proof of purchase, I was given a run around and refused service. They would not send anyone to fix the broken element because it was too far (103 miles). We followed all of the directions they emailed me, we know it is not electrical, we submitted the ohms, they still refuse to do anything. I am Day 4 with no hot water and current outside temperature is in the 30s F.
I have read great reviews for the company and its products that are more than 5 years old. The current situation is poor. Try another company.
Save your Money before you buy a heater…um
Save your Money before you buy a heater with aosmith they take advantage of the poor and elderly people can't they sell defective heaters! and won't give money back they make you jump through hoops. I HAD TWO DEFECTIVE HEATERS
150-year-old company has gone down in quality and respect
what heater 50 gl 3 years old gas valve goes out then 2 months later gas valve again goes out and the thermopile needed to be replaced and burner needed to be cleaned
I would give them a negative star if I…
I would give them a negative star if I could. First off the customer tech support is condescending and rude. Isn’t it their job to help and troubleshoot? My water heater is less than a year old. Just recently it would shut off. We would restart the pilot and a few or several hours later, it would shut off again. He told us there’s nothing he can do unless I count the blinking lights to get a error code. I’m not going to sit in my cold garage waiting for my heater to shut off to hopefully catch the blinking lights. He rudely told me I needed to pay a plumber to do it for me. I’m not paying a plumber $350 to count the blinking lights for a $700 water heater. They should not bother having technical support if their job is to give you the run-around. It’s very deceptive and poor business ethics. I would never buy another product from them again and highly discourage anyone from purchasing one.
On my 3rd AO Smith heat pump water…
On my 3rd AO Smith heat pump water heater in 3 years. Very Discouraging! I’m not sure what is going on in there factory, but these heat pump water heaters are junk and this will be my last one. I’ve been told that several heat pump water heaters made by AO Smith and installed in my area are having similar issues. This is happening in the state of Maine. The unit keeps throwing an error code or the compressor is faulty. The anode rods are also part of their failure. My hot water smells like rotten eggs, never have I smelled that only since the heat pump was installed. They just dissolve inside of the tank, what a mess. When I drained the tank to remove from my basement the liquid that came out of the bottom reminds me of gray wall paper paste.Would not Recommend!!!!!!
Stay away from the A O Smith Vertex
Stay away from the A O Smith Vertex. I just replaced this water heater after 8 years. I had six service calls on the unit over the ownership period. Everything from rust inhibiting operation in the first two years, to an igniter going out to ultimately a bad blower vent motor vibrating so much it caused the wires to come out of the plastic clip. I called A O Smith about replacing the blower motor and they wanted $1500. I don’t know how a company can produce a product with so many flaws and have the indecency to charge half the price of the water heater to replace the blower motor. My parents had an A O Smith and also had many issues. I will never buy an A O Smith product again.
Our old AO Smith lasted 34 years
Honestly after reading all the negative reviews I’m very shocked. Maybe this company has fallen? Im not sure. Im just here to give compliment of our own water heater from AO Smith which lasted 34 years without any trouble. It retired today, not because it’s not functioning but because the gas price in our area is rocket high and we want to switch to electrical water heater… all the plumbers visited our place were impressed by how long the water heater lasted. We don’t know anything about products from this brand nowadays, but it certainly WAS great and high quality. I really hope this company keeps its quality and last. We appreciate our old water heater and thanks for its service!
