Terrible company

Terrible company! They have terrible customer service and are the worst company I've ever tried to speak with. They billed me for power usage during a 6.5 day December power outage. I think we made 10 contacts with them to get our section of a neighborhood back online. Then, we got billed for 2.5 days of power when we had none. I contacted the company so many times I can't count, and each time asked to speak to a supervisor. They blew me off, didn't document the details, pushed me to paperless billing and then charged me another late fee while we tried to resolve the issue! If I could stop using them I would. I was nice and polite and know turning off the power helped prevent a fire. But to be charged for days we didn't have power, then be given the run around, and charged more late fees while trying to resolve the issue is so beyond awful, I can't give them a low enough rating. I "used" 50% less power than the previous year at the same kWh rate and my bill was at least $100 more! Find a different company if you can. NEVER use them.

They just don't care.

At the moment I can't speak for Xcel Energy's energy services, but their customer service is quite hit or miss.

We've moved to MN, and our energy supplier is Xcel. After having service established, I tried to set up an account with their website (which, along with their mobile app, is Xcel's strongly preferred method of interaction).

After setting up my account, I needed to verify my email address before proceeding, which I did. For some reason, this created a doom loop where, whenever I tried to log in, I was directed to the "verify your email address" page again.

The first person I spoke to through customer service was able to resolve that issue. However, when I tried to log in again, I started receiving a log in error. This error is consistent across multiple browsers and devices, including those with the Xcel app. I was advised by the same rep that it might take a few hours for the changes to propagate through their system.

Five days later, same problem. I called customer service again, and this time was told by the rep that "Uhh... someone's probably working on it. Just keep trying to log in." I asked if there was any confirmation that someone was working on my problem and was told "we won't send anything out if it's fixed so... uhh... just keep trying to log in."

After living in multiple states/countries where you could choose your energy supplier, I've forgotten how bad it is to live in a regulated state where the energy company doesn't have to do anything for you because you're stuck with them either way.

After 5 requests for a dupe bill, I'm still waiting

My August 2025 bill never arrived; the first or second time in 12 years of service. I have requested a duplicate statement FIVE TIMES, [YES 5 TIMES!!!], but not one of them has come. Seriously Xcel? How hard is it to make a copy? Not even your expensive automated system is capable of fulfilling this task, DESPITE IT BEING AN OPTION. 😒 I see the September bill arrived no problem.

Constant outages for no reason

Constant outages for no reason. Outages last for 6+ hours and service is never restored when Xcel says it will be restored. Planned outages are just a control tactic and I’m tired of it. You’re providing a service, SO PROVIDE IT! DON’T TRY TO CONTROL THE AMOUNT OF ENERGY USED IF WE’RE PAYING FOR IT!!!!! This is the most unreliable and untrustworthy company. How did they create a monopoly in eight states??? There are no other options for electrical services in Colorado. If there were, I would gladly switch away from a company that feels the need to control people through access to the power grid. Whatever happened to Tesla’s free energy??? I would just like to be able to work from home, do my laundry, not worry about what’s in my fridge and freezer, take a shower, charge my phone, and come home to a house with electricity after a long 14 hour nursing shift. Nice going, Xcel!!! Excellent work! I’m sick of your games. Get it together or let someone who is reliable, responsible, and trustworthy take over for you.

Poor Insurance Advice

I just received a notice from Xcel Energy suggesting homeowners should subscribe to paying $5.50/month to another company (Homeserve USA) for a home protection insurance plan for the natural gas and water service lines to our house. Xcel should not be in anyway connected with another company providing such coverage as the need for this protection is extremely remote with the very good materials used for these service lines to most houses in the US. This appears to me as a scam by Xcel and would not doubt they are getting a kickback from HomeServe USA. These two companies are obviously connected as the mailing offering this coverage came from Xcel Energy. Disgusting. If I could cancel my service I would.

The power has gone out 4 times in the last 2 months! Last 2 it was sunny no weather issues! I get it in a storm or accident taking out a transformer but it seems like it’s a power grid with not enough backup power.

Bill for service that doesn't exist, and impossible to get help

Xcel is billing me for service that hasn't been connected yet.
I tried contacting customer service, and after wading through options the automated menu hung up on me saying they were only taking emergency calls right now. (but they tell you if it's an emergency, hang up and dial 911, so...then they're taking no calls?)
I tried contacting the person in charge of the project to get my power connected, and he insisted he can't do anything about that because it's billing. He gave me multiple phone numbers for other departments that also insist it isn't their problem.
Ultimately I ended up back at Customer Service, and instead of disconnecting me, it just made me wait 30 minutes to talk to someone who says "well, we created your account, so service has been initiated, so we will bill you every month." This despite the fact that he could see in the system that my installation is actually scheduled for a date in the future, and my "meter reading" is 0kwh, because, again, the installation hasn't yet happened.
If only there was any accountability for this monopoly.

Sleazy, shady, slimy snakes in the grass that LOVE to try and change things without your knowledge

I had installed a smart thermostat in my home and was told by the HVAC company who installed it that Xcel had a rebate for it. I filled out the form and submitted it. Weeks later, it was denied because my property type didn't qualify. I live in a condo and nowhere on the form, website etc., did it say that condos didn't qualify until AFTER my denial. I had taken screenshots before applying and after I got the denial because I like to keep record of things. And in the screenshots I took before I applied, it did not say anywhere that condos didn't qualify. After I got the denial did they add that condos didn't qualify. That is some sleazy, shady, slimy snake type s*** that they pulled! Absolutely foul! It is a shame that they have a monopoly in the area they provide service. I wish we had more options other than Xcel!

Dismal company, dismal service.

A dismal company providing dismal service at exorbitant prices. 14 hours and counting without electricity and Xcel is unable to provide an ETA for when power will be back on. If only we didn’t have monopolies and had a free market system.

I see on the news that the new billing will increase your payment by $15 or less. My bill has been well over $100 more every month for a small 1300' square foot house. I can see why this company is forcing people to burn a camping heater in their house b/c they afford to pay this company. They have also passed their legal fees onto us as well. I am sure at some point we will be doing their building maintenance to pay them next.

The Most Hated Utility in the US

The Most Hated Utility in the US. Anytime Xcel is involved in ANYTHING it's a ClustF$%K!

They portray themselves as "customer friendly" in their public service ads, but they are criminal in their execution of their services & responsibilities to customers.

They go out of their way to deter customers from switching to solar power - IN EVERY STATE THEY SERVICE. I'm a victim of this scam. One of their service tech/employees said "every solar array we approve, is that much more revenue we lose"

Read the reviews from Colorado, Minnesota, etc... Contact your states PUC & Attorney General. Customers beware!!!
