Avoid Thrifty Car Rental – Our Florida Experience
We have just returned from Florida, and our experience with Thrifty Car Rental was by far the worst part of our holiday.
From the moment we reached the desk, we felt under constant pressure to buy additional insurance. It seemed as though every possible extra was being pushed, despite us already having the cover we needed. It felt like a sales pitch rather than a customer service experience.
To make matters worse, when we returned the car, a £500 deposit had been taken, and £183.45 was deducted for insurance products that we did not believe we had agreed to purchase. We are now disputing this.
While we were waiting, we also witnessed another family being told they couldn’t have their rental car unless they took out additional insurance. Seeing that made us realise we weren’t the only customers feeling pressured.
We were then told that the car we had booked wasn’t available and that we would have to upgrade. We made it clear that this wasn’t our mistake and shouldn’t become our problem.
Another thing to watch out for is the toll pass. We were encouraged to buy one at the rental desk, yet there was a machine nearby offering what appeared to be the same service for around half the price.
Whenever we questioned what we were being told or challenged the extra charges, communication suddenly became much more difficult, making the whole situation even more frustrating.
In our opinion, the staff appeared to be focused on selling extras rather than providing good customer service.
The only positive part of the experience was booking through Debbie’s Villas. They were excellent from start to finish, and we cannot praise them highly enough. They have also told us that they’ve had other customers report similar experiences with this rental company, and they have been very supportive while we try to resolve the issue.
Our advice is simple: think very carefully before using Thrifty Car Rental. Read everything you’re asked to sign, question any additional charges, and don’t feel pressured into buying extras you don’t want or don’t need

Very disappointing
I am extremely disappointed with my experience with Thrifty.
I received a vehicle where the keys were simply handed to me. There was no joint inspection with me, I was not taken around the vehicle, I was not shown the condition of the tyres, and I did not sign any check-out paperwork confirming that I accepted the vehicle condition.
During the rental period, I noticed a tyre concern and, rather than ignore it, I contacted Thrifty and followed their instructions to have the vehicle checked at Kwik Fit. I acted responsibly and reported the issue.
Despite this, Thrifty later held me responsible for the tyre damage. I disputed the charge and requested evidence showing how they could prove the damage occurred during my rental and evidence confirming the tyres were free from any existing or hidden issue before I received the vehicle.
The most concerning part was the documentation. Thrifty relied on a check-out report containing a customer signature against my name, despite me not signing anything at handover or authorising anyone else to sign on my behalf. When I raised this concern, I was told the signature “matched” another signature, but my question about how the signature was created and who completed it was not properly answered.
I also felt that my other concerns were not properly addressed. The response focused heavily on the fact that the tyre issue was reported during my rental, but reporting a problem does not automatically prove that the customer caused the damage.
Overall, I feel the process was unfair and that my concerns were dismissed rather than properly investigated. This experience has left me with no confidence in Thrifty’s handling of disputed damage claims by their credit control team.
Please make sure Thrifty completes an all round check with you so you do not end up with any surprise charges.
However after several emails back and forth the customer service department did rectify this and waiver the charge. So thank you to them!

Jason and Corsa at the dudley branch, they were both very helpful, polite and friendly with the service that gave us, the customer service was first class and the staff were polite to us, they and went through all the paperwork with us, taking things one step at a time. Helpful with the paperwork on the phone to get the dvla codes for me and my partner, they are both a great asset to the company worth keeping. They know their jobs and deserve a recognition for their hard work that they both do,

Very unprofessional and rude. Left my disabled parents standing in a tiny hot reception area, whilst the manager was on the phone for 45 minutes, didn’t even acknowledge their arrival - appalling customer service.
The cost of the car hire seemed to fluctuate for no apparent reason. Avoid.

Professional service
We hired a car from Thrifty in Aylesbury, Bucks over the weekend. Easy to book online and by far the cheapest of all online options. We dealt with Mohammed Tayub, rental agent at the desk. He was so helpful, efficient and professional. The car was spotless and ready to go. Really impressed with the whole end to end service. We would definitely use this company again.

SCAMMERS - I hired at car from Girona airport & was advised to return it full of fuel. I did this, took a photo of fuel gauge & kept fuel receipt. They still debited my credit card for tank of fuel

Keep sending harrasing emails and invoices stating liable for damage I did not do during rental agreement. Evidence provided car was moved by someone else before their photos were taken, but they still state I'm liable AVOID

Good car and service at a reasonable price, but the usual overcharging is a total pain. Clearly it is a managed and planned procedure as trying to get support to resolve is easier than opening the Strait of Hormuz. Better to avoid.

Complete ripoff merchants
Complete ripoff merchants. At Kerry airport, I was charged for premium emergency roadside cover(€56) and also Wheel Tyre and Glass Cover (€56) withhout being asked. According to their website, the latter is included in the €152 Supercover that I took out. Because the plane was late landing, I was charged €30 for late collection (they had to stay open till around 7pm rather than usual 6.30pm). The actual total bill was over three times the headline rental price of €169 for 8 days rental.

I recently visited the Switch branch in Stirchley Birmingham and I couldn’t be more impressed with the experience. From the moment I walked in the atmosphere was welcoming and well organized, but what truly made the visit stand out was the exceptional service I received from Anil and Brian.
Both Anil and Brian were incredibly professional, approachable, and genuinely attentive. They took the time to understand exactly what I needed, answered all my questions with patience, and made sure I felt confident every step of the way. Their knowledge and calm, friendly manner turned what could have been a routine visit into a genuinely positive experience. It’s rare to come across customer service that feels this sincere and effortless. Anil and Brian are a real credit to the team I truly hope they get the recognition they deserve.
