"Not flashy, just fabulous, The Oberoi Beach Resort, Mauritius”
Firstly, and most importantly, I would like to apologise to the Oberoi General Manager, Mr. Aditya Vikram Pandey and Amanda, our wedding planner for our tardiness in posting this review. Life, work and a wedding party took all our free time and to our everlasting shame the Oberoi review kept slipping down the list. Putting that all to one side we enjoyed a fabulous 12 nights at The Oberoi Beach Resort in May.
Having been fortunate enough to have stayed at several high-end international chains and independent hotels, who claim to deliver great service, we can report that The Oberoi delivers the highest standard of service you should expect from a five-star hotel.
Plan: Holiday – Wedding – Honeymoon. We wanted a simple wedding, and the wedding planner Amanda worked diligently to ensure The Oberoi Beach Resort didn’t disappoint. From the amazing flowers to the exquisite food, helping us navigate the legal paperwork - she had everything covered. To Amanda’s irritation she couldn’t control the slightly unpredictable weather, but she did have an alternative Plan B in place, which fortunately, was made redundant by beautiful blue skies. We had a magical day and have many happy memories.
We found that each and every member of staff gave a warm greeting to every single guest and always looked after the guests to the very highest of standards. All the staff went out of their way to ensure we had what we needed. Our room was immaculate (pool villa 103, has a large sunny garden), and it stayed that way due to the hard work of the housekeeping staff.
The food at both restaurants was great – ‘The Restaurant’, breakfast and dinner, smart casual, and ‘On The Rocks’ Lunch and Dinner, was fantastic both in terms of choice, and taste. The Room Service menu was as good as the restaurants.
The gardens are well maintained, the beach was always clean, and beach beds were actually comfortable. Make sure you are on the beach at 1415 hrs, when the staff deliver the best sorbet or ice cream, supervised by the Oberoi’s resident ducks. Best of all, the hotel does not play music all day in public spaces, so you will find a peaceful place to relax. The Oberoi has gone to the top of our list for places to go back to for a fly and flop holiday, and we hope it won’t be too long before we return.
Special thanks to Aina in the main restaurant, Omar at ‘On the Rocks’, Preeti in the Beauty Salon, and Ragini Vimish& Nilesh of Team 103 / Housekeeping. And of course, top marks to Amanda, for ensuring it all went to plan and JJ for some great photos!
Top tips:
• Cocktails at sunset are magnificent.
• You can eat seafood every day and never get bored of the menus.
• Check out all three pools - none of them were busy on our stay, but it would be a shame to miss one out.
• If you can stretch to the use of The Oberoi airport pick-up, then you will be very comfortable in their brand new 7 Series BMW.
• Bring beach shoes to help navigate the stoney waterline in if you are not a confident swimmer.
• ALL beaches in Mauritius are public beaches.
