Botley park Southampton was the worst…
Botley park Southampton was the worst hotel experience we have ever had. The rooms were awful, there was not enough staff, the food was appalling and overpriced and our complaint from September 2023 has still not been dealt with. DO NOT waste your hard earned money
Genuinely shocked this is a 4 star…
Frimley Hall - Camberley
Genuinely shocked this is a 4 star hotel. My boyfriend booked the Sunday spa getaway to celebrate my birthday and graduation. We booked a standard double and the room looked nothing like what was advertised. The room was icy cold and had a portable heater in it, which warmed the room up, but the bathroom felt like a freezer, given it was 0 degree weather. The bed was so soft and weirdly slanted, your feet felt more elevated than your head even with two pillows. The sofa was abismal, with pancakes for seating and we had a lovely view of the car park. We then went to the spa. We were told we could not upgrade our 25 minute treatment until the day, but they didn’t answer any phone calls. When we arrived we asked to upgrade but we were told they were fully booked until the next day at 3.30pm, when we would have already checked out and needed to be back home. The back massage was good, but over far too quickly, therefore ineffective. We then headed to the pool, which had at least 4 children under 10 in it, screaming, splashing around and playing catch… not relaxing. The hotel policy clearly states children are not allowed in the spa area “due the relaxing nature”. There was a plaster in the shower by the pool, which just felt dirty. The loungers were terrible quality and there were hardly any available, we had to wait for loungers, wait to fit in the sauna, wait to fit in the steam room.
Dinner food was good, but I’ve never had to eat with such a blunt knife and even the steak knife I requested was blunt. I also wasn’t asked how I wanted my lamb rump cooked, I would have preferred it rarer.
After a terrible night sleep, we went back to the spa after breakfast and checking out. This time there was a full blown water aerobics class taking place with 80s music blasting and an instructor shouting, not relaxing… couldn’t use the pool, no loungers were available again and the sauna and steam room were full again. The same plaster I had seen in the shower the day before was still there, the floor was grimy, there was a giant toe nail next to our lounger, dirty cups everywhere and no clean ones for water. I saw staff come into the spa/pool area with dirty trainers on.
Overall the stay was just shocking. I will never visit a MacDonald hotel again and I think their 4 star rating seriously needs to be reconsidered.
Stayed at Macdonald Barth spa hotel
Stayed at Macdonald Barth spa hotel. January 2024.
Food was horrible had battered haddock and chips. Fish was burnt chips were undercooked didn’t eat dinner again. Breakfast at 25.00 per person was also poor at best and if you drink a latte or cappuccino etc it’s another £5.50 per cup, beware though they don’t tell you that until you leave the breakfast room, 4 star hotels don’t charge extra for coffee. Bathroom was dirty, rooms are dated and in need of refurbishment opened the window couldn’t get it shut again without a struggle. They rate this as a five star but at best it should be a 3 star. Watch out the price on drinks they are outrageous 12.50 for a single gin and tonic. After all the above did not bother using the spa. Won’t stay there again

Wow what a shambles..
Wow what a shambles..
Wife flies in to Uk alone for cancer treatment.
Leaves the room 101 returning at 4pm to find the room empty ipad personal stuff including her cancer meds imwhich are totally impossible to replace quickly.
Stuff was returned later that day in a bin bag! having been placed in lost property.. what was still missing were the Belgium chocolate Christmas presents which turned up a day later ironically.
Sent e mail to head office .. nothing ..
Tried to call the manager but the reception just rings out for 30 mins then cuts off.
Been staying here for years.. not again.
Shambolic !! Not such a Merry Christmas Day !
Portal Hotel - Cheshire
I had booked a Christmas lunch back in Oct / Nov for three people, as advertised on their web page and confirmed on two occasions my reservation with reception.(2.30pm).
My name and number were taken, and when I rang back closer to Christmas Day to confirm, I was told by reception “yes your booked in and in the system, we look forward to seeing you”
We arrived at the hotel for 2.15 and asked at reception where we go for the Christmas Day lunch. The receptionist informed us that the kitchen was closed and there is no lunch. We were astonished to hear this as the website says the Christmas Day lunch was sold out.
The receptionist didn’t seem to know anything about the event. We were all very upset and annoyed. I was unable to contact anyone with any knowledge as to why the event wasn’t going ahead. Basically a total shambles and a complete disgrace ruining our Christmas Day!
Oh I wish I had read reviews before I…
Oh I wish I had read reviews before I made a purchase. Just phoned reservations to ask about my vouchers. I purchased £400 on Saturday the 16th December as they advertised Christmas delivery if ordered before the 18th.
I have spoken to 4 different people but their resolution is to either cancel for a refund or have them re-issued. Seriously!!!!! Christmas delivery gives the hint that it is a Christmas gift. Apparently they don’t do the vouchers, they are outsourced and posted by SKchase voucher. They said it’s Hotels fault and that they are only the software company, they offered a refund of the £9.90 delivery fee. Then Jen a manager said I could cancel. Honestly, they are quick enough to take the money but customer service is diabolical. Jen also offered an email voucher. If I had wanted an email voucher I would have just gone to Wowcher or Groupon. Now to read that the hotels are rubbish. I wish I had bought my children something better.
So disappointed, spend your money elsewhere!!
We booked this spa weekend at MacDonald Crutherland House for our joint birthdays and we were both disappointed with our stay. The animosity between staff was palpable, they were swearing about each other and openly mocking one another in front of us. We did not feel welcome because of this.
The room was tired and in need of some necessary repairs. The restaurant experience was soulless and mediocre for a company with the reputation they have had. We ordered breakfast to our room and had dinner in Strathavon on the Saturday as well to avoid going in
Our time in the actual spa was the highlight of the weekend as the staff there made an effort.
We wouldn't return as it wasn't value for money!
Avoid - look to other better options
Been trying to give Linden Hall Hotel a 7 room booking. Was offered a price which I communicated to my party only to be told 30 minutes later that they’d made a mistake !! Original price per room £420 suddenly became £566! A joke - golf breaks on their own site for just one room were cheaper and rates on Trivagi etc cheaper still. Incompetent doesn’t begin to describe the ineptitude
Unresponsive & terrible hotel
I've been emailing via their website, the resolver app, social media about an appalling experience I had since August but not had a single response
AVOID ABERFOYLE RESORT AND SPA
A place where dogs get treated better than humans. Thought at the end ANT and DEC were going to jump out. “PET FRIENDLY” wouldn’t even allow my dog stay there. Seen better kept kennels.
Power cuts
Disgusting operations manager
Rooms from the 60s
Dirty laundry in the rooms
Spa and pool never open
Pint costs £7.95
Regrettably, our recent stay at your esteemed hotel was marred by a series of distressing mishaps and disappointments. From booking issues to unclean rooms and unprofessional conduct from the operations manager, the experience was far from satisfactory. We hope urgent measures are taken to address the concerns outlined in this review, and we urge a thorough investigation and a full refund. It is crucial to restore the professionalism that should define your establishment. Rebecca on reception showed effort, but the behavior of the operations manager, Claire, calls for scrutiny. We trust you will take appropriate action to ensure a better experience for future guests.
Macdonald Aviemore Resort - AVOID!!!
AVOID!!!
If I could give this place 0 stars I would! We visited here for one night in September for my partners birthday/September long weekend with our 6 year old son. Not only was the activity centre closed so nothing to do with our son, the breakfast was horrendous - overcooked food, disgusting coffee & sticky floors but there was GLASS in the bed which had been set up for my son! He came in the double bed so his dad decided to sleep in the spare & was cut during the night by shards of glass under the covers.
By far the worst customer service ever..
The hotel have refused a refund - offering another overnight stay instead.. not a chance would I step foot back in here. The management are horrendous, giving me the run about & not even bothering to get back in touch, staff claiming members of staff dealing with the complaint are not at work when I have already spoken to them that same morning. I have been refused details for head management & also been ignored after asking multiple times to be contacted directly from head management.
Only advice I can give you is to steer clear of this resort & if you do attend hope there’s no issues whilst there as they do not care about customers!
The room was in an extremely poor…
The room was in an extremely poor condition. Every chair arm was frayed and worn through, a carpet join had split and separated leaving a gap between the two pieces, in other places the carpet was bare down to the backing. the wardrobe had doors missing, the bathroom needed the drains unblocking to allow the water to flow away, the shampoo and soap bottles were almost empty, the water fountains were never replenished apart from in the spa. In other words it was anything but a luxury hotel. I had booked a macdonald hotel having always been satisfied, but this experience will make me think twice before ever staying with macdonald again. It's reputation as run down and in bad need of renovation is well known among the locals. I only wish I had checked before booking this break expecting a really good stay at the end of our fortnight's holiday. The food was good, the staff were good, the location and grounds are really lovely. It suggests that the whole problem lies with the management either locally, or more probably at the Macdonald HQ.
Just really awful, Shabby overpriced rooms.
Just awful. We stayed at The Bear Hotel in Woodstock for 2 nights 15th/16th Sept 2023. How this company can charge £329 per room per night is just unbelievable. It's shame I can't upload photos, but to give you an idea, there were water leaks on the ceiling, peeling paint, dirty paintwork, mould in the bath/shower, hairs in the bed, stained carpets, poor quality, chipped furniture. Just a total disgrace. To top if off, for this price you would expect some bottles of compilmentary water, but no, no water. The room was very warm, appreciate it's a very old building and unable to have aircon fitted, but a fan would have been nice! We did complain and were moved to another room, which was marginally better. The whole place needs a complete refurb. Do not stay here.
VOUCHER SCAM
I booked for my girlfriend the
Luxury Weekend Overnight Stay - Voucher for £200.
Take time to relax and enjoy a break at Macdonald Berystede Hotel & Spa. Your break consists of a three-course Table d'hote dinner in our award winning Hyperion restaurant, an overnight stay in a beautifully appointed classic room and full English breakfast. Use of the hotels luxury Spa facility is also included in the price. Valid Friday - Sunday Inclusive.
When we went to redeem this we were told we would actually havr to pay the difference on the £200 to book the room, and that we'd just booked a £200 voucher, not the overnight stay including breakfast and dinner. They said it would be an extra £100 for the night (Voucher is valid for 12months so price increases shouldn't be reflected in that time) and we had £25 each to spend at dinner, and we would need to pay everything on top. It was completely false advertising from a company that obvioulsy cares nothing about their customers and all about profit. Do NOT buy a voucher from them, it's to try and lock you in, and then ramp up prices so you have to pay more.
Craxton Wood Hotel
If . . .
If you want to sleep on pillows so hard
that you’ll need a physiotherapist by dawn
Or a bed so hard you’ll wonder
if you have been laid out!
If you want your coffee whisked away
while your are fire-fighting the toaster
Or impersonal staff barging you
as they roam this plastic palace
If you want good value and service
with a smile, then it’s got to be anywhere
But Craxton Wood Hotel
No one even answers the phone
I booked the 'ultimate luxury spa break' for two nights at Frimley Hall on Monday and Tuesday next week (at a cost of £374) to spend some time with my sister and niece, but I am worried about going as my husband has been really unwell all week. I have spent the last two days trying in vain to speak to someone at the hotel (directly with eight phone calls at different times of day and an email, and via Head Office who also tried to put me through twice and sent an email to the manager). It was a non-amendable deal and, whilst I don't expect a refund, I hoped that anyone with compassion would allow me to change the dates/exchange my booking for a gift voucher. My daughter may have been able to go instead, if I had managed to speak to the hotel yesterday or even this morning, but it is now too late for her to rearrange her work commitments. As others have said, I wish I had looked at these reviews before booking – even if the hotel agrees to change the date, it doesn't bode well if there isn't even anyone to answer the phone. Still waiting for a response – it's now Saturday at 5pm and the spa break starts on Monday. And these are luxury hotels?
Terrible!! Please avoid!!
I booked a one night stay for my 40th birthday in July and paid £593 for one night bed and breakfast. I was expecting something pretty special for that price!
What I actually got was worse than a budget hotel. I wish I had checked these reviews first before booking and I would’ve saved myself almost £600 and a lot of disappointment.
The spa facilities were tired and unclean - if you could even call it a spa. I’ve been to better spas in your average gym.
Parts of the spa were not working, such as the jacuzzi, salt room and all areas of the spa were extremely unclean, smelled bad and there was mould in the swimming pool! There was not enough seating or loungers for the amount of people there.
The images and description of the hotel did not match what was actually the reality.
The gym was filthy, and it looked like the floor hadn’t been vacuumed in a very long time. Same with the breakfast area; bits of dirt and food all over the floor.
The room itself was okay, but very dated and the bathroom again had mould.
The service was average, and average food, which was overpriced.
They also charge £75 to your credit card upon arrival, which I don’t understand as normally they might just authorise it but don’t actually take the money... However I did get this refunded on checkout.
The hotel in general is in need of a refurbishment and is nowhere near worth the amount I paid.
The property and the service was not worth £600 a night. I’m very disappointed and I feel like I wasted that money.
Utter disappointment. Avoid!
Utter disappointment. Room was below average. We got a baby cot with NO MATTRESS AND NO BEDDING!!! Rock hard frame - that’s it. Place looked fun down. I can tell hotel is struggling. Food in a restaurant was overpriced. It would have been OK if we got quality food for a price we payed. However, we felt like we were paying fine dining prices and getting canteen food. That is how it tasted- bland, mediocre. Service was mediocre too. No one offered us bar food menu when we were having drinks. We did not even realised there is a bar menu. Coffee in a main restaurant tasted bad - like cheep bitter Nescafé instant coffee. Waiter brought cup with coffe all spilled around a cup. Then we asked a box to take pizza away with us and water brought a dirty box full of crumbs inside. Everything looked run down and in disrepair. I do not recommend - earful place!!
Money grabbing without class
We arrived at the Kilhey Hotel very late on a Friday night with two kids, having seen on Booking.com that there was space with a final quote of £194. We didn't just book as we had a couple of questions so turned up with the quote at reception. They obviously realised that we, and our kids, were very tired as they put the price up to £325 and we were told they absolutely wouldn't honour the booking.com price even if we booked it there and then.
With little choice in the middle of nowhere we paid the extortionate rate and stayed. I really wish we hadn't. Our whole side of the hotel stank of weed, the rooms were in a state of disrepair and the walls paper thin. We were awake until gone 3am with people banging and shouting in the hallways.
We spoke to reception staff in the morning and were told there was no one who could help us with our complaint, but -sounding very sympathetic - we were promised a call on the Monday by an operations manager. No call has ever been attempted and this place clearly don't care. Next time we'll find a Holiday Inn
