After a two year wait facing legal…
After a two year wait facing legal action the Legal Ombudsman mishandled my case by shutting it down without reviewing my evidence, failed to investigate my solicitors conflict of interest and other serious professional misconduct including the misallocation of minors’ funds, ignoring the safeguarding risks, refusing disability-adjustment requirements, misapplying their own rules, and leaving me without a lawful or fair remed. Refusing to report to SRA who also refused to investigate on approach. My service complaint was shut down without valid explanation and they simply stopped responding leaving miniors funds at risk. It’s a set up to defend legal firms in my eyes.
Pathetic Service
If there was a -10 for the LO would go for it - after 4 months I still wait for a case worker allocation - they cut you off after 10mins when you try to call - Pathetic, unacceptable and utterly substandard service
Keep complaining, write to the MPs, social media and the newspapers -they are not paid to take the mickey - keep writing negative reviews - the legal profession in this country is overpaid and provide an appalling service (I like their taking monies on account and then try to get your money back) - worst lot on the planet (alongside insurers and bankers)
Don't expect compensation - this is for service issues only
Jodie was helpful, efficient, and set out the basis of their powers from the outset. The Legal Ombudsman will not impose compensation orders on law firms, just small amounts for poor service (max about £1k).
They do require significant amounts of evidence, and it takes a *long* time, but when my complaint was finally allocated to a case handler the process worked.
My only gripes are that they are under resourced, and do not offer the same remedies which used to be available via the Law Society. This does force those with a legitimate loss to seek redress through other means (e.g. the County Court System or (no-win-no-fee).
[UPDATE]
Having been through this tortuous process, and the law firm having agreed to pay the (small) amount recommended by the Ombudsman, I am no further forward. The law firm (Carpenters - AVOID!) simply ignored the remedy they had agreed to, and failed to pay me.
I approached the Ombudsman for their further assistance and - radio silence!
IMHO they need to be replaced with a statutory body.
I filed a complaint with the Ombudsman…
I filed a complaint with the Ombudsman back in August 2025 about a law firm. It has taken all this time—several months—for them to come back with a decision, and ultimately they have sided with the law firm I complained about. The delay has been frustrating, and it feels like the Ombudsman process has been slow and unhelpful by just backing the firm rather than fairly considering the complaint.
I forced the give a star this fraud
I forced the give a star this fraud , corrupt organisation called the do called ombudmsn that the do called service improver Jody and heady toe lie and cheat to cover up their fee payers serial and serious unlawful practices this the so called legal ombudman who has nothing legal about their unlawful practices should be dismantled and replaced by the independent body to protect the rule of law , justice sytem unlike now .
Hypocrites
Hypocrites. lots of reviewers seem to think that LEO are biased toward solicitors. Solicitors see it as the other way round. LEO can take a year to review a conmplaint but can criticese a solicitor for taking a couple of weeks to respond to a disgruntled client. Our society is now full of demanding clients who think they are buying legal services from Amazon with next day delivery. And they are becoming more and more rude and disrespectful hence lawyers now finding the need for notices stating abuse will not be tolerated. I think the dismissal of clients by firms is going to be commonplace going forward.
Biased, not fit for purpose, useless organisation to waste your time
After over a year of waiting, the Legal Ombudsman dismissed almost my entire case on a technicality that doesn’t stand up to basic scrutiny. They treated a routine goodwill discount from my solicitor as a “full and final settlement”, even though there was no agreement, no waiver, and no consent from me.
When the only remaining issues were the solicitor withholding court documents and failing to close the case properly, the Ombudsman dismissed those too, calling them “not worth investigating”. After a 12-month delay, this came across as simply clearing their workload rather than delivering justice.
Throughout the process, it felt like every benefit of the doubt went to the solicitor, not the consumer. Important facts were ignored, delays were never acknowledged, and the reasoning in the final decision was inconsistent and deeply unfair.
The Legal Ombudsman is supposed to protect the public, but my experience felt biased, slow, and dismissive. I am now seeking legal advice for Judicial Review, something no ordinary person should have to do just to get a fair investigation.
The public deserves better.
Unbelievably Incompetent
Every thing. Started in June 2023, Lied to us in March 2024 about working on it then . Only just finished this month Nov 2025. Incompetent and totally unfit for purpose. Believed everything Solicitor said, not proof passed to them. At final decision included following: On the 30th they sent a FINAL decision and indicated on 14th Nov we had not replied, Had replied on 21 Oct 2025, but ignored. ON THE FINAL DECISION DATED 30TH OCTOBER THEY ASKED FOR A REPLY BY THE 21 OCTOBER 2025.
""WE ARE NOT TIME LORDS""
We the tax payer are financing their INCOMPETENCE.
Ineffectual, biased and a complete waste of time
I completely agree with the 96% of all reviewers here who have awarded the lowest possible rating of 1 star. The Legal Ombudsman does not have the remit, the will or the expertise to hold to account the firms that are complained about. Firstly, it only considers matters of `service' and not the quality of professional advice. Secondly, it only looks for `reasonable' service and not `perfect' service (an idea I struggle to apply to the law where a client expects informed advice and nothing less). Thirdly, its investigators/ombudsmen are unqualified to challenge the firms they are investigating. Fourthly, even where they find failings their awards are paltry, not worth the time of any claimant, and serve as no deterrent at all to the poor practice of law firms. Don't be fooled by their adoption of lofty legal terminology, and onerous requirements for evidence/detriment, into thinking that your case will be considered with any rigour. Neither the investigator assigned to my case who reached the first case decision, nor the ombudsman who reviewed it for a final decision, has any legal background. The firm I complained about, on the other hand, retains one of their ex partners, a retired deputy district judge, to handle complaints made against the firm.
I spent huge amounts of time providing clear and detailed evidence to support my complaint at both stages, cross referenced to the different elements. Throughout, the Ombudsman investigations leaned in favour of the firm, readily accepting their assertions and overlooking or discounting mine. The first case decision particularly contained errors of fact and understanding. Even where they conceded that the firm could have done more at different stages, they decided that that would have constituted a `perfect' service rather than a `reasonable' one. They even provided excuses for the firm's failings that not even the firm had put forward. The whole thing took 21 months from when I took the complaint to them to the 'final decision'. Although they found in my favour in some elements of my complaint/claim, they awarded me £150 (which they said was in their `moderate' category of awards so goodness knows what the minor category is). This does not even touch the sides of the tens of thousand of pounds losses which I had claimed resulted from the firm's failure to provide me with key legal advice and information. Even the firm itself had admitted some shortcomings and offered me just over £1,000. So in fact the Ombudsman `lost' me money, despite assuring me in writing at the start that the offer from the firm would not be replaced with a lesser award. In fact that is exactly what happened and the Ombudsman now say they are sorry if I relied on that advice! I am now making a complaint about that.
Unfortunately, most people using the Legal Ombudsman will not have the option of going through the courts - but I suggest that unless your case is blindingly obvious (eg your solicitor lost a bag with all your money in it) you don't incur years of further stress by attempting to seek any resolution through this service . Although I can pursue my own case no further, I will be raising questions elsewhere about the Legal Ombudsman's fitness for purpose. It is in no way providing 'justice' for ordinary people.
Institutional Bias: I Rejected Their Decision—and So Should You!!any complainants don’t realise that…
Many complainants don’t realise that Legal Ombudsman decisions only become binding if accepted. If you reject the decision, it has no legal force, and you remain free to litigate. (CHECK YOUR LEGAL HOME INSURANCE)
- “A watchdog that protects the pack—refused to investigate, ignored evidence, and shielded misconduct.”
- “Not fit for purpose: delays, bias, and a refusal to assess negligence while blocking access to justice.”
- “They dismissed my complaint without scrutiny—no legal training, no accountability, no justice.”
- “A regulatory smokescreen: designed to deflect, not resolve. Consumers beware.”
- “I rejected their decision—because it wasn’t one. No legal reasoning, no fairness, just obstruction.”
My solicitor and barrister failed to identify the correct order type, misrepresented my position, and advised settlement without full disclosure, with fraudulent and inaccurate financial disclosure, without scrutiny. The Legal Ombudsman refused to investigate, despite clear evidence of procedural error and professional misconduct. This isn’t just poor service—it’s a public interest failure. This system needs exposing, and I intend to do just that.”

Grateful to LeO for proving my case, but this does not change defiant law firms
I am leaving this review to express my sincere gratitude to the Legal Ombudsman (LeO) for their independent investigation into my case against Brethertons Rugby. I had been pursuing the law firm for years over a critical currency error they made in my Consent Order, which cost me an estimated £57,000.The Ombudsman did their job thoroughly. They officially ruled that Brethertons made an error, failed to rectify it, and acted unreasonably toward me. I am incredibly grateful to LeO for this official acknowledgment and accountability; without them, it never would have happened. However, my case highlights a frustrating gap in the wider system. Although Brethertons formally accepted LeO's findings, it has not translated into them taking actual responsibility or rectifying my financial loss. They admitted wrongdoing to the regulator but continue to operate in the exact same unreasonable way toward me.Ultimately, LeO proved my case, but firms like Brethertons know the court system is too expensive for an individual to pursue further. They exploit this loophole to evade paying out for the damage they caused, leaving victims with a win on paper but no true justice. Thank you to the Ombudsman team for their hard work, but the system needs stronger teeth to force defiant law firms to fix their mistakes.
The LO covers up Law Firm Fraud with Decision not to Investigation
They were so invested in not finding against the Law Firm, they made up to 3 attempts to have the case dismissed. The first 1. Outof date, which failed, it wasn’t! Then the 2nd “headers” with another investigation officers wording - not working, ie untrue and not my words! So, he was removed - disappeared from the case and new wording,by an ombudsman, replaced the wording with more incorrect interpretations of my words. And said if l didn’t accept the poorly defined representation of my words, they wouldn’t continue my case/investigate: So knowing l had to make a minor correction, they used their poor interpretation to say my claim should not be investigated because of a word change . Apparently their rules allow them to do that too! Ignore very serious allegations and serious evidence of fraud! And as it was the second complaint l had made against the same law firm, they totally used their powers, them and the ombudsman, to holt a second investigation of their consistent unlawful behaviour. And Claiming my very serious evidence of the firms data selling should be struck out!!!! And all evidence they tried to hide, but failed, using data protection. And all 3 separate attempts not to hear the case won! The strike out, the final bullet, in a repartition of the neurodivergent client being to hard to simply agree lies, so “we can’t agree” headers. But l did agree - ie so l didn’t want the law firm to get off! But It’s clear muzzling of a client -with a legitimate case - they just had to close. And silence the client! That had every chance at winning. Think Luigi Mangione. DDD. Because my case had a 200% chance of wining, like my PI case, which was accepted, but the law firm LD sabotaged the case, altered medical records and the closed the case, having underestimated quantum. And how did they close the case, by pretending we couldn’t agree - when in fact their deliberate incompetence! Lies and a lack of professionalism and integrity was key. And the LO Service defended that look too! Because they and the insurance companies were in some sort of Kartel. And Luigi knew that too!
A Complete Betrayal of Trust - Incompetent, Discriminatory, and Unfit for Purpose.
Do not walk, run away from the Legal Ombudsman. If you are a disabled or vulnerable person seeking justice against a law firm, I urge you to find another path. My experience has shown them to be a profoundly dysfunctional organisation that fails at every level: service, investigation, impartiality, and its basic duties under the Equality Act 2010. They are not a route to justice; they are a barrier to it.
My case was simple: I paid a law firm a significant sum for legal advice that was so deficient it caused immense damage to my Employment Tribunal case, necessitating three separate case management hearings just to fix the mess they made. What I received from the Legal Ombudsman was not a resolution, but a masterclass in institutional failure.
1. Blatant Disregard for Disability:
From my very first communication, I clearly stated my disabilities (autism, ADHD, PTSD) and outlined my simple, legally-protected reasonable adjustments for communication. These were not suggestions; they were requirements for me to access their service. They were completely ignored. Dense blocks of text were sent, clear instructions were not followed, and a supporter I had asked to be copied in was excluded. When challenged, the investigator's manager defended the failures. This isn't just poor service; it is discriminatory and unlawful.
2. A Shamefully Incompetent Investigation:
The initial investigator assigned to my case was grossly incompetent. His first assessment was factually incorrect, brazenly stating I hadn't suffered any financial loss when this was the entire basis of my complaint. After I complained about his service, he sent a "revised" assessment. He admitted his first one was wrong, but then invented a new, equally absurd reason to dismiss my complaint, concluding the legal advice wasn't "obviously wrong".
This ignores the concrete, real-world fact that the advice was demonstrably unfit for purpose, evidenced by the three court hearings required to undo the damage. Their logic is a bureaucratic shield to avoid proper scrutiny.
3. Conflict of Interest and Institutional Indifference:
The most shocking part was what happened after I filed a formal complaint against the investigator for his incompetence and discrimination. Instead of removing him from my case, his manager insisted he continue to handle it, forcing me to deal with the very person I had a live complaint against. This is an outrageous conflict of interest that caused me immense distress. Their justification was that they were "following the process". Their process, it seems, is designed to protect their staff, not the public.
The final decision, unsurprisingly, rubber-stamped the investigator's flawed recommendation. They have closed my case without ever properly investigating the core issue.
Conclusion:
The Legal Ombudsman has failed me. They have failed in their duty of care, failed to uphold the Equality Act, and failed to provide anything resembling an impartial or competent investigation. They took a clear case of professional negligence and turned it into a bureaucratic nightmare. If this is the "justice" they offer, consumers are better off without it. Avoid at all costs.
Please don’t waste you time using this unfair service!
If if have known then what I know now I Wouldn’t have wasted the time and effort that I put into this! They are a lengthy process that generally don’t even work to their own set timelines, when you do eventually get a case worker. I have used an ombudsman’s twice once for a legal service dispute and once about 10 years ago for a deposit/ rental issue both times the only people protected and treated fairly where the companies that I was mistreated by… I feel extremely let down I went to a service that I believed was there to protect the “ little people”but sadly this really couldn’t be further from the truth!!
Not fit for purpose useless…
Not fit for purpose useless organisation who care little for the people it is meant to serve.
Do Not Waste Your Time!
I made a complaint to The Legal Ombudsman Service and received a response stating I would hear from them within 10 weeks after 13 weeks nothing so I referred the mater to my local MP. I received a reply claiming they have a backlog; would it not have been common sense to issue an email to advise of this.
They said they would investigate my complaint but I believe they are just paying lip service. They did not uphold my complaint but I believe they never do it is apparent they will always fall on the side of the solicitors involved; maybe this is because of the way they are funded by the legal profession through a levy and case fees paid by legal service providers.
Do not waste your time making a complaint
Recently had my first experience with ……
Recently had my first experience with … a word of advice for anyone think of using them … don’t bother wasting your time !!
I really don’t understand why they even exist as an organisation… I wanted my solicitor’s complaint investigating properly … basically they refused ,and simply told me to take the insultingly small compensation offer … so again …
WHAT IS THE POINT OF THEM EVEN EXISTING ????
Terrible service I was told that they…
Very disappointing experience. I was informed that the Legal Ombudsman cannot hold anyone accountable or conduct any form of investigation. In a case involving what I believe was illegal abandonment, they accepted the solicitor’s version of events without properly investigating or considering the evidence I presented. My key points highlighting misconduct were ignored, and every part of my complaint was rejected without a thorough review.
If you’re looking for accountability, I would not recommend using the Legal Ombudsman. It’s disheartening and alarming to realize that there seems to be no system in place to truly protect our legal rights. It leaves you feeling like you’re on your own.

For anyone who was dealing with this shit show of a company
Gareth Webb & Co LLP, a law firm based in Yeovil, has been closed down by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) due to suspected dishonesty on the part of one of its managers, Katherine Louise Mickler, and non-compliance with the firm's license terms. Here are some key points about the situation:
- Reason for Closure: The SRA intervened on June 6, 2025, to protect the interests of the firm's clients or former clients, citing reasons such as suspected dishonesty and license non-compliance.
- Impact on Clients:
The closed firm can no longer act for its clients, who will need to find new solicitors to handle their cases. Clients can contact Shakespeare Martineau's Interventions Team for assistance with transferring their files and retrieving any documents or money held by the firm.
- Complaints Process: Clients with complaints about the service provided by Gareth Webb & Co LLP should contact the Legal Ombudsman directly.
- File and Money Retrieval: Clients can request their files and any money held by the firm by contacting Shakespeare Martineau or the SRA. The SRA will attempt to return any money owed to clients, and those who urgently need funds can apply to the Compensation Fund for assistance.
If you're looking for more information or need assistance with a matter related to Gareth Webb & Co LLP, you can

- Visit the SRA's website for guidance on interventions and the complaints process
- Reach out to the Legal Ombudsman for complaints-related inquiries: 0300 555 0333
I reached out to the Legal Ombudsman over 20 months ago regarding this firm and Ms Mickler and to date it is still waiting for an investigator to be appointed... Fuming doesn't even begin to cover how I'm currently feeling.
We even complained to the SRA who also dismissed our concerns, 5 month later in March 2024 and they also dismissed our concerns.
There needs to be a better system to protect beneficiaries that doesn't potentially bankrupt them if they need to fight so called professionals...
How could they not know after chasing a 20 month old complaint that they recently pushed back yet another 3 months, what was actually happening?
Legal Ombudsman and the SRA have a lot to answer to.
It stinks of a cover up.
