Great Experience, wonderful tutors... but very intensive workload.

You’ll probably find this message long and tedious, but please bear with me. If you value your time, money, and peace of mind, I urge you to read this through to the end.
As a student who was born and bred here in England, I’ve experienced two very different university environments. I completed my undergraduate degree at a reputable university in England where I felt genuinely supported, not only by teaching staff, but also by admin teams, careers staff, and student support services. The atmosphere there encouraged students to succeed, and I performed very well academically because of that support.
Unfortunately, my experience at the University of Law has been the complete opposite.
In my experience, the university feels far more focused on money than student welfare or academic support. Many tutors appear disengaged and inaccessible. I have booked meetings with tutors to discuss important academic concerns, only to find them distracted or clearly not taking the meeting seriously. Personal tutors often take a very long time to respond to students, and communication frequently feels inconsistent or dismissive.
Students are told that extra support and drop-in sessions will be available closer to exam season, yet tutors then go on annual leave without properly notifying students or ensuring alternative support is in place. At one of the most stressful points of the academic year, students are often left without guidance.
Another major issue is the quality and consistency of teaching. Some staff members are genuinely good and do try their best, but the overall teaching standard is inconsistent and often limited to the bare minimum needed to get through content. Many tutors are former solicitors rather than trained educators, and while professional experience is valuable, being knowledgeable in practice does not automatically make someone an effective teacher.
Study Skills support is acceptable, but much of the advice given is extremely generic and often repeats information students already know from reading course materials. There is very little practical guidance on how to actually approach assessments to achieve higher marks. Students are often told what they did wrong in feedback, despite previously being advised differently by tutors or support staff.
Communication across departments is extremely poor. Different teams regularly give conflicting advice about exams, assessments, and procedures. Information on the university website regarding exam formats, assessment expectations, and course structures is often unclear or incomplete. Students are left trying to figure out important information themselves.
The administrative side of the university has also been incredibly frustrating. Responses are often dismissive, delayed, or unhelpful. Many services appear heavily outsourced, and staff frequently seem unsure of processes or unable to provide consistent answers. This creates unnecessary stress for students already under pressure.
The handling of Exceptional Circumstances/EDMC applications is another major concern. Students can wait three to four months just to receive an outcome about whether they qualify for a first sitting or whether their exam attempt will stand. That level of uncertainty has a huge impact on students’ wellbeing and academic progression.
Mental health support has also felt inadequate. In my experience, students struggling with stress or burnout are often met with responses that essentially amount to “you just have to manage it.” There is little meaningful understanding of the pressure students are under.
I also strongly feel that the university heavily markets opportunities and support systems to prospective students that do not reflect the reality once enrolled. International students in particular are charged significantly more, yet the quality of support often does not justify the cost.
Overall, while there are some good individual staff members, my experience has been overwhelmingly disappointing. I would not recommend this university to others based on the lack of support, poor communication, inconsistent teaching, administrative issues, and the impact it can have on students’ mental health and finances. Too often, it feels like students are left to struggle alone after paying extremely high tuition fees and taking on significant debt.

Extremely disappointing experience overall. The university showed very little care or understanding when handling mitigating circumstances, which felt dismissive at a time students are supposed to be supported. Communication was consistently poor — emails went unanswered, updates were unclear, and students were often left chasing for basic information. Organisation across the course and administration was chaotic and lacked professionalism. To make matters worse, the preparation course was badly run and did not adequately prepare students for the demands of the programme. For the fees charged, the level of support and organisation fell far below expectations.

Dear Olivia,
Thank you for your response and for acknowledging my perspective.
However, I believe it is important to be direct about the specific issue I was raising. Whilst I appreciate the reference to supporting “students from all backgrounds,” I do think there is a tendency within institutions to broaden discussions around racial disparities in a way that unintentionally dilutes the particular experiences of Black African and Caribbean students and graduates within the legal profession.
The concern I raised was not simply about “different barriers” generally. It was specifically about the disproportionate barriers, exclusion, and underrepresentation experienced by Black individuals, particularly those from African and Caribbean backgrounds, within legal education and progression into the profession. Broadening the discussion to “all backgrounds” risks shifting attention away from the very group that statistics, lived experiences, and professional outcomes consistently demonstrate are impacted differently and more severely.
Inclusion should not mean avoiding specificity where specificity is necessary.
I also note the reference to “valuing conversations like this.” Whilst discussion is important, meaningful progress cannot rest solely on asking those affected by inequality to repeatedly explain or justify their experiences. The more important discussions are often the ones that need to occur internally within institutions and professional communities where the biases, assumptions, gatekeeping, and structural barriers originate.
There is already significant awareness amongst Black students and graduates regarding these issues because they live them. The real challenge is whether institutions are willing to critically examine uncomfortable patterns within recruitment practices, employability expectations, networking cultures, perceptions of professionalism, and access to opportunities.
My intention in raising these concerns was not to have a generic diversity conversation, but to highlight that there remains a persistent gap between equality language and the lived realities experienced by many Black aspiring legal professionals.
Ultimately, meaningful change is reflected not only in institutional statements, but in tangible outcomes relating to access, retention, progression, and representation.
I do appreciate your response and acknowledgement of my feedback, and I hope the University continues to reflect critically on these issues in a meaningful and measurable way.

The staff were great and supportive. You could count on the best of assisstance when the need arises right from the lecture halls to the administrators.
Also, because of their many campuses across the country you can choose a favorable one depending on your situation and location.

Generally good but,,,
Marking is slow so by the time we get results (specifically the mocks) they felt irrelevant
In one exam I scored an overall mark of 95%. I was curious to know where that mark stood in the year. A strong standing would have made a useful comment on a CV for future applications. The information would have been easily available but the university declined to reveal that
The feedback on the two coursework assignments was of no help at all. It was impossible to fit a proper answer into the word count . I re-drafted many times and had to miss our import references. I appreciate your response to that will be to tell me the art of being concise is an important skill to learn… sure. But that riposte is too easy. The feedback, as I anticipated, identified the references I had had to cut out yet identified no superfluous information. I would suggest those setting course work should attempt the question themself to see if it can be completed fully within the word limit

My course was fully remote and Dan (lecturer) was super structured and supportive. It was not easy to study whilst working full-time, but all lessons were recorded and uploaded onto the VLE which made possible to catch up on any missed lessons. Overall a great experience!

The ceremony was beautiful and enjoyable. However, the speaker calling the names was rushing. He was not careful to check whether the person he called had already finished finished shaking the vice chancellors hand before calling the next few names. His eyes were fixed on the paper. As a result, he began calling names ahead of the people that were actually walking on stage and this created an overlap in time which meant that he called the wrong name when it was my turn to walk the red carpet. This also happened to other students until one student addressed it. I forgive him but it did temporarily ruin my day as I had deeply looked forward to that moment my name would be called on stage and I walk the red carpet. Nevertheless, not even he could stop me from strutting my stuff down the carpet in victory walk style to whose ever name that was :).
For future, the person reading the names should look up and be more thorough. Seems easy enough to adopt don’t you think? :)

Teaching was fairly good, every teacher you get is or has been a lawyer which is always a plus! Unfortunately the admin at this university is absolutely awful: any issues I have get ignored if I try to email them, (or get responded to weeks/ up to a month later). When I call about an issue it’s the same thing, I get transferred about 5/6 times to different departments with no resolution & when I do manage to speak to someone they then tell me to email. It’s really quite disappointing & unfortunately if you have any issues you want to raise it does take quite a while for anyone to get back to you.

I had really great lecturers who were instrumental in ensuring I didn’t disgrace myself. My supervisor gave clear guidance around my dissertation, and the overall teaching experience was good.
Sadly, I was less enamoured of the admin. The student handbook had some provisions that I had not encountered at other institutions. If you want a glitzy certificate, ULAW may not be the place for you. There’s no university crest, and the colours seem rather plain. I would also have liked to have been handed a scroll (or a scroll case) during graduation.

I attended the (now defunct) Guildford Campus for my LLB (Hons) from 2022 to 2025. The teaching was good, delivered to us in small groups, the timetable was convenient, and my experience was generally positive.
There were just two drawbacks, really - there was very little social life (literally no societies), and the university decided to sell the Guildford campus partway through my degree, meaning the final year was done on the premises of a local college. I really can’t express how disappointing that was - they offered the opportunity to switch to another of their campuses elsewhere, but I was already stuck in a rental contract and settled in elsewhere, so I didn’t have much choice.
I am now doing my postgraduate studies with the University of Law, because I felt that my experience was sufficiently positive the first time around. I’m focusing this review on my undergraduate degree as that’s what I’ve been asked to do… and the university should really be grateful for that.

I like the university and studies and the support. But I'm not satisfied with student finance team because Im asking them for 500pounds refund for the early bird discount and they wanted to send it to forex and I wanted the amount in my UK bank account. When I ask them about this there is no update.

They cancelled my course one month before it was due to start. I had already arranged accommodation, booked flights, and paid for everything, so I couldn’t get any compensation for all these expenses—not to mention the money I spent applying for the master’s program, including document translations and language exams.
A total failure.

One of the worst university in terms of SQE 1 preparation. Expensive course and shit service is their quality. Does not try to understand the perspective and difficulties faced by students. Just opened the univesity to make money from students. Please do not use them for SQE instead find cheaper options suitable to your needs. Their face to face classes are joke just waste your time to show that they provide quality education. In additoin, they give their sqe portal access for 3 attempts/ for 1.5 years which means that you have to take sqe 1 attempts back to back. They do not care if someone has funds to take second attempt or not. However, if you take LLM SQE so then you have 5 years access to their Elite app/sqe app. Simply pushing and undue promotion of LLM to students. Would never recommend University of Law to anyone.

I thought, I will get a global exposer but it seems like a Asia exposer that I am receiving. When it comes to classroom, everyone sets with their local people and talk with their own language. If I try to talk in English , they just ignore me. In some courses, university should focus on more such as Data analytics for Business, this course cannot be completed with 9 classes. I got only one class for machine learning. If university cannot give us time then they should give us the access to some online course in online platforms, namely, udemy and coursera.
