Better than nothing, but just barely.
Better than nothing, but just barely. This place is a small (don't believe their 750 foot vertical claim) ski area south of Buffalo, NY. It serves as a "destination" ski area and daytrip area for people from Southern Ontario, Buffalo, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Their snowmaking is great when they use it, though they prefer quantity to quality. Their grooming is downright dangerous as they employ "countour grooming," a term they've coined to designate grooming without putting the front blade down to grade out the surface. If you like death cookies, this is your place. If you like getting yelled at or your kids getting yelled at by the over zealous "yellow jackets," this is your place. The food for sale is wonderfully expensive and most employees are miserable. Must be due to the constantly grey weather. Lodging is not worth the price, nor are lift tickets. One thing that is great, they will give you free ponchos to wear during the many rainy days to protect you from the weather and chairlift grease. If you're heading to Ellicottville, NY to ski, prepare to drink your sorrows away, but if you're there during the week, go ski the private ski area, Holimont. Their snowmaking, lifts, grooming and attitudes are much better.
Yes, it is close to a few large metropolitan areas, but for the money, go west and experience real skiing.
