I’ve been visiting your stores since the late 80s. I’m an old school hippy with enormous respect for life and have always been mostly happy with what Ive seen in your stores. Largely because they seemed ethical. I’ve always been able to get what I need cheaper elsewhere, but I’ve been pleased with the health of the fish and their general wellbeing in Maidenhead stores which is of course among the most important things to me.
However.
I had a discussion with a member of staff at one of your stores yesterday. We were discussing koi as i was looking to buy some new stock for my indoor zen garden and the experience left me feeling not very zen at all. Especially as the member of staff was very rude to me when he realised I was not impressed with where these fish had come from, I think the exact wording was “buy them somewhere else then”.
It was revealed to me that a large portion of the koi you stock are sourced from fish farms in Israel.
I don’t think I need to go into why in the current climate this is concerning, but it is, extremely. There have been issues now for long enough that suppliers could have been changed if there was any desire to but greed trumps (ha) all once again.
I haven’t consumed a Coca Cola product since the 80s and nestle no longer exists in my life among many others for varying ethical reasons. Finding good chocolate used to be a nightmare! Thanks fairtrade.
I never thought I’d have to stop using Maidenhead, but here we are.
I can’t justify contributing to a company that values money over ethical sources.
I’ll be going to independent stores from now on and so will my friends. Slightly inconvenient, but less expensive AND I know my money is supporting real people and not another soulless chain.
That response, goodness... “b-b-but I started doing business with the bad guys before WW2!” No, it’s greed.

This place has gone down hill over the last year. Original staff have seemed to jump ship and the new ones don't seem to have a clue. Overheard a disturbing comment from one male member of staff that has finally caused me to boycott this shop. The young lady was very helpful but the guys in the shop let it down. Not keen on the new manager either seems very disingenuous.

needed help to replace feed pipe to my pond pump-
staff quickly cut a new length of pipe, and attached it to the cones at either end so I could fix it in place immediately and restart the pump. for £5.99. At Aylesbury /Wendover store on old Wyevale site now Dobbies but about to change to Blue Diamond Garden Centres.

Bought 4 Mollies,cost me £15,had water tested at purchase,all okay.Within 4 days 2 had died.When I took them back to store,I was told they only gave a 48 hour guarantee ! If the water was fine,it must have been the fish,won’t be going there again !! 😡👎🏿

Very disappointed with fish from here.
Brought 6 tetras and within 48 hours 3 were dead. Took them back and had them replaced these are now dead less than a week later.
Brought 3 gouramis at same time and also 2 of these are dead and 3rd dying.
All other fish I had before are fine and water is testing as good.
Asked for refund and in the end they reluctantly gave a credit note to spend on more fish.
Why would I want to buy more fish from this company after my son spent £40 and only has 2 fish left.
Would have been nice to have a cash refund given my young son had saved his pocket money for these fish and was so excited now he dreads getting up in a morning to see dead fish.

A Fantastic Experience at Maidenhead Aquatics Thornbury!
I’ve wanted a fish tank for years, fueled by my passion for aquascaping and love for fish. When my wife finally gave me the green light, we headed to Maidenhead Aquatics in Thornbury—and it turned out to be the best decision ever!
From the moment we walked in, the experience was fantastic. I appreciated being able to explore the shop at my own pace without feeling pressured by staff, which let me really take in the variety of tanks and setups available. My wife and I narrowed our choices down to three tanks based on online recommendations, and that’s when we approached a staff member named John for advice.
John was incredibly knowledgeable—though he seemed a little shy at first, he quickly warmed up and expertly guided us through the pros and cons of each option. He answered every one of our many questions with patience and enthusiasm, helping us choose the Scaper 90L as the perfect tank for our needs.
What really impressed me was John’s dedication. The tank we wanted wasn’t in stock, but he went above and beyond by checking a delivery note, finding one that hadn’t been booked in yet, and ensuring it was sorted so we could take it home that day. On top of that, he helped us navigate the click-and-collect process to pick up the matching cabinet from the Cadbury branch the next day. Thanks to his help, I had the tank set up and cycling by Saturday night—exactly as I’d hoped!
Since then, I’ve been back to the store weekly while my tank is cycling. Each visit has been a joy, thanks to the friendly and knowledgeable team. John, Shannon, and the store manager (whose name escapes me) have all been incredibly helpful. Whether it’s testing my water, helping me choose hardscape and plants, or simply sharing advice, they’ve made me feel like Maidenhead Aquatics Thornbury is my store.
Now, I’m counting down the days until my tank is fully cycled so my wife, little boy, and I can pick out our fish and truly bring our aquarium to life.
Thank you, John and the team, for making this such an amazing experience! You’ve gained a loyal customer in me.

Went to my local Maidenhead aquatics (I go every week and buy plants, fish etc)
I needed a new filter for my isolation tank and always noticed the price guarantee banner in store. asked the chap in the store if it included filters and he looked at me like a bit of crap on his shoe and sulkily said "depends on where its from and we add delivery charge" anyway showed him the filter £10 cheaper from a wel known online retailer.
He then said "nah that retailer ain't on my list" confused why the well known retailer wasn't on their list I mentioned that they are a massive aquatic company. he huffed and puffed them remarked that he actually found them.
He mentioned straight away that although the item was eligible for free delivery they have to add the delivery charge anyway to the price match.
He then argued that the item was out of stock although it showed clearly 2 in stock.
At this time a que was forming and the embarrassment was something I've never experienced. this chap was gearing up for a full blown argument about a £10 saving on price matching a filter, the sulky and bad attitude from this guy just made the entire price match ordeal embarrassing, argumentive and uncomfortable. they really didnt want to price match and tried everything to argue with me.
In the end after he had interrogated my phone with his dirty hands I just brought the fish and plants and told him to keep the filter. he then sarcastically said well its a different filter anyway which it wasn't
I ended up buying the same one from pets at home store after I left for £18 cheaper anyway as the had a offer on.
I'm glad this happened anyway as i am in the process of adding a marine setup to my hobby and had planned on using Maidenhead aquatic's to purchase a new set up etc, I will now go elsewhere.
its been a blast spending silly amounts of money with you Maidenhead, you've lost a consistent customer that spends and will be spending a decent amount of money in the future over your staff having a huge chip on their shoulder and not honouring your advertised price match promise and or making it embarrassing and difficult to engage with.

Steer clear from these amateurs!! Every time I’ve visited one of the shops always find dead fish or diseased ones, marine fish are cramped into tiny tanks ( no surprise they lose so many) staff have little to no real experience and have no interested in being there.

I came here to personally acknowledge the absolutely fantastic service I received from your colleague Freya in your store over the weekend.
I have never met such a passionate, knowledgeable customer sales advisor ever! Freya was so helpful and patient, she made my experience in your store 10/10. I really hope that she is personally recognised by the store manager for her superb customer service. She is truly a credit to your store.
I visited this shop today inside dobbis garden centre in Stockton and was very impressed with the customer service was spot on couldn't of been happier they were so friendly and very helpful
