Distressing experience

On our visit last week, my son asked a young member of staff to prepare three Chocolate Gourami fish for us, as they were on offer, ready for when we had finished looking around the garden centre. When we returned to the counter, the fish were already bagged up and we paid for three. However, once back at the car we checked the bag and discovered that only two small fish had been given to us.
I immediately returned to the store to resolve this issue, while my son waited in the car. I spoke to a blonde woman with a foreign accent who was extremely rude, abrupt, and unprofessional. I explained that we had paid for three larger fish but had only received two smaller ones. Rather than calmly assisting, she raised her voice in an aggressive manner and repeatedly asked what water the fish would be kept in. I explained that my son is a proficient fish keeper and had already discussed the tank with the previous staff member. Despite this, she continued to talk over me and stated that if the fish were to die, the store would not replace them. Her tone and manner were completely unacceptable, leaving me distressed. Eventually, I left the store with the correct fish.
Unfortunately, when we returned to the store on 30th September to purchase lava rock, the same member of staff acted in an even more humiliating manner. As soon as she saw us, she loudly told a colleague — in earshot of both myself and my son — that we had been “stupid” the previous week for not checking the fish before leaving the store, then coming back in, and that we had been “awkward” customers. When I asked her directly if she was referring to us, she laughed in my face and said yes.
This public humiliation was completely unnecessary and deeply upsetting. I already live with Parkinson’s disease, which can make me feel vulnerable and anxious in public situations. To be openly mocked by a member of your staff in front of others left both myself and my son embarrassed and distressed.

Pleco died within 3 days

Bought a number of fish in their Radyr store on Saturday, looked in the tank yesterday (Monday) and the pleco i bought was dead. Not happy but not a problem as the other fish are thriving and I assumed that as it was within 3 days I'd get a replacement or refund. Was fobbed off by someone who sounded like he didn't even know what day it was, never mind anything else, and he muttered something about coming down in Saturday. I gave up and hung up. Nice place but the staff don't sound professional at all

Best fish shop around!!

We have been attending this shop for years and the staff. Amy, Max & Rich, are fantastic and we have built a wonderful relationship with Amy especially!
Always there for any advice and help needed!
We have very successful fishtanks thanks to these guys! Couldn’t ask for a better team to help us look after our growing passion/hobby!!
There is no comparison when to comes to their friendliness and expertise!!

Lovely fish but the staff let the shop…

Lovely fish but the staff let the shop down. We went in to buy fish and they were too busy talking to want to help us. I felt like we were an inconvenience, someone reluctantly helped.

On asking what fish food is best, he pointed randomly to one, which we bought. Stupidly we trusted him as he's supposed to be the 'expert'. Our fish have not eaten this. On research, this type of cold water fish are definitely not meant to eat tropical fish food (I had made a comment about this before buying).

Well I'd recommend going for the variety of fish, don't expect any level of good customer service. Do your research before going, as they will not help you and do not seem to care about what happens to the fish once you have bought them.

Maiden head aquatics (Stourbridge)

All the tropical fish iv brought from maiden head aquatics ,inside cherry lane garden centre (Stourbridge) have lived along time,even years ,they are all healthy well looked after, no dead fish in any of the tanks ,the pricing can be on the more expensive side, but in reality they are great quality and thriving ,also a great choice of cold, tropical and marine fish, plus everything from gravel to tanks ,complete set ups , very good with knowledge especially steve who has been there years! Think he is part of the furniture 🤔 highly recommended for everything fish related

I cant suggest these guys enough , I've become quite the regular in the Aberdeen store, staff are always helpful and have gone above and beyond every time I've been there, with my tank project and my 8year olds. i bought my son his first pet ,he wanted a betta ,after a while..... unfortunately our filters died ,we had to cycle everything with our fish in the tank and one member of staff went above and beyond helped us with everything we needed and was really knowledgeable , saved a massive melt down. and all of my kids are learning loads about environments and fish keeping which is a boost. i love it... best place I've been to in Aberdeen and I've been to few. the selection of fish they have is insane a swell. don't think ill be shopping anywhere else.
even if you go in for a look you wont be disappointed

Don’t pass them by

After 30 yrs of using various fish shops for pond and aquarium items… I needed somewhere local for an emergency… I used Maidenhead aquatics Dartford … used others main one being pollhill… but have to say Dartford have it to a tee in all aspects… also staff took the time to get me out the proverbial… as of now my first port of call 👍

Online store is not working

Online store is not working.
Tried to order aquarium plant soil twice now..
Every time I complete the payment website just bounces back and appears like I havent order anything.
Payment is pending but no confirmation is sent by the store regarding the purchase. Then later payment just comes back to me.

A very well set up shop at maidenhead…

A very well set up shop at maidenhead aquatics at summerhil Basildon essex.
Very disappointed with them due to the fact I bought £85 worth of fish within 24 hrs 1 gourami died phoned the shop up and said to bring a water sample with me for then to check and quess what the water was all over the place according to them and want replace the fish ,so I took the water sample to another shop and the only problem that they could find was the water was a bit soft but not enough to harm the fish, my argument is if the water is as bad as they say why haven't the other fish died that i brought and my other fish!!
I did point out that the member of staff used his thumb to flick the fish into the bag.
When you get in contact with them they just baffle you with science ,
The end result is that I won't be going there again.

Hi Richard,

Thank you for your review. As stated in previous emails, the fish loss was almost certainly due to nitrate levels exceeding 200 ppm and KH being at 0 ppm. The test results were attached to the earlier email.

We have offered to replace the lost fish despite the water parameters being significantly outside our recommended ranges. We are still happy to provide that replacement, but I’m afraid there will be no further investigation into the lost Gourami, as it is clear this was a water quality issue.

Paid £384.00 for a Oase thermo…

Paid £384.00 for a Oase thermo biomaster set it all up swapped the cycled media etc from my old fluval filter filled and primed the Oase to find the heating element plug is snapped and unable to function. I asked Maidenhead politely if they can help me out here somehow as it’s a 2 hour round trip for me and I’ve spent allot of time setting it up and it’s now a running filter minus the heating. They said no I have to box it up and return it. For a fish store specifically they seem daft enough to think this is even feasible to do. I could happy cap the thermo section off and post it back for repair or replacement but no they need the complete unit in the box absolute joke I’ll just have to waste more money on a new thermo spare part online.

They don't even deserve the 1 star.

I rarely in my life leave a negative review, but my experience with Maidenhead Aquatics Trowel, nottingham was extremely disappointing and left me with financial loss, stress, and decision to stop fish keepiing

On April 28th, I bought a Superfish tank with a stand, plus ornaments worth £90, and later spent over £100 more on fish, plants, and aquarium products from the same store. I carefully cycled the tank before adding fish from their other branch in Edwalton, but two fish died within 48 hours. I had raised concerns with staff about the fish looking sick (possibly septicemia), but was told it was just stress. I later learned antibiotics were needed, and that stopped further deaths.

On June 28th, we came home to find the tank leaking badly, which damaged our expensive new carpet and two toys. I returned to the store with videos clearly showing the leak, but they insisted on testing it themselves. 24 hours later, they admitted it was a faulty tank. Everything is documented by emails.
I told them I no longer trusted Superfish and asked for a Fluval Flex 57L, which they confirmed was available and promised to order. I even bought a new stand for £80 from Amazon to be ready when it arrived. I emailed multiple times and was repeatedly told the tank was on its way.
Then, on the day I was due to collect it, I received an email saying it never arrived and the manufacturer is now out of stock, leaving me with no tank, dead plants, and dead fish. I went to the store again and was told they could only refund the tank and stand, but not the ornaments, plants, or products, even though I made it clear I am now stopping the hobby because of this whole situation. I even asked that i will buy a more expensive tank if they give me a good offer to show my good well but they said NO . Honestly, Unbelievable.
I’ve now spent over £250, lost fish and plants, wasted many hours, and been left with no solution . The replacement tank they offered has poor reviews, which I had already rejected as i can not afford another catastrophe. Their salesman even told me that had some issues with that tank when I asked about it and he recommended the fluval flex.
I am sharing photos, emails, and videos throughout this process. I expected better support, especially after investing so much money in their products. This experience has completely put me off keeping fish. I’m sharing this so others can make an informed choice.

I bought a Pontec solar fountain pump…

I bought a Pontec solar fountain pump set at the Christchurch branch.. you think when buying this, baring in mind all information is in German so it’s difficult to tell tell what your getting, that you think your buying a solar panel that will work a fountain from sunlight but what you actually need is a battery to make the solar panel work well & consistently..
the Manager informed me they are absolutely useless in this country.. 🙄
but proceeded to tell me as I'd used it he couldn’t give me my money back..

Goldfish bought for 12 pounds

Goldfish bought for 12 pounds . Overly aggressive to other tank members. Contacted the shop do not accept returns ! Poor customer service for a fish that cost pennies obtain from suppliers. And we wonder why Amazon will take over the retail world!

Poor Advice Preston Branch

Really poor service from the preston branch this week.
I was miss sold a beautiful pair of rams for my african cichlid tank. When i returned to the store to question the advice that i was given, the same lad sniggered and said they'll all be fine because they are all raised in tap water these days. Needless to say, i left the shop distraught and took my business elsewhere, bought a new tank for the rams alone and will never revisit that store with that staff sorry.

Excellent Communication. Excellent Support. The advice I received concerning the purchase of potential fish for my uncompleted outdoor pond was professional. When my pond is in perfect condition for the fish, I will revisit and complete the purchase.
