Mr David W. Woo FRCOphth 

I was referred to Dr. David W. Woo, Consultant in January 2018 for possible Glaucoma as my field of vision was beginning to become impaired and my eye pressure was very high, in the 30’s. I continued with Dr. Woo until he recently, September 2019, moved away from the UK to return to his childhood home country. After the initial appointment, Dr. Woo brought my Glaucoma quickly under control so that no vision was lost and my eye pressure returned to low normal via medicinal drops. Several months ago I believed the drops were causing some side effects and he worked diligently with me to look at other options for treatment including laser and surgical interventions. He took me very seriously and was extremely supportive while looking at these possible interventions. Fortunately we decided the drops were not at fault and I have returned to using them with great success. As a woman, I have sometimes felt my reports were not trusted by some physicians and that as a result my concerns were minimized. This was definitely not the situation with Dr. Woo. He always listened carefully to my reporting and discussed all options for treatment in understandable detail. In addition, he was always professional and personable in his manner. I would strongly recommend Dr Woo to anyone needing help with Glaucoma or other related ophthalmic issues. He is an excellent Consultant and a kind and thoughtful person.

He is very good in his specialty and I have total faith in his abilities, he has transformed my vision and has kept me informed every step of the way. When my previous glaucoma consultant retired he unhesitatingly suggested that I transfer to Mr Woo, and stated that he was " a rising star and first class". And he was right! Mr Woo is a superb consultant and immediately instills confidence. He has trained at Moorfields , is now a highly experienced surgeon and keeps abreast of all new developments in glaucoma treatment. He calmly explains his suggested treatment plan and involves me in his thinking and decisions. With Mr Woo looking after me I felt in very safe hands, something that is very important to those of us with glaucoma.
He has now decided to return to Malaysia and whilst I wholeheartedly wish him every continued success I know that his departure will be a major loss to glaucoma patients in the North East and I am very sad indeed. We are losing a very talented consultant.

I first meet Mr Woo in March 2017. I thought what a lovely man he was, so passionate about his work. He instilled confidence in him straightaway. I had lost confidence in how I was being treated, so I was very fortunate that he agreed to take me on up at Sunderland Eye Infirmary. Mr Woo has been so kind, polite and caring with me. I could not have wished for a better consultant.

I’d had a very bad experience after the first trabeculectomy that I’d had done elsewhere, so as you can imagine I was dreading having another trabeculectomy done. Mr Woo reassured me and told me that it would not happen again. True to his word, I have not experienced any pain with any procedure that I have had done. Mr Woo is extremely professional and has so much concern for patient comfort. He has always explained everything fully, even drawing diagrams to help me understand what was going on and what he was trying to achieve.

Mr Woo has been brilliant and I would recommend him to anyone without hesitation. He has the perfect bedside manner that makes you feels so special and that nothing is too much trouble for him. Through his care and professionalism, he has restored my confidence in the NHS. His skill is exceptional and you couldn’t get better treatment even if you went private.

I am so sad that he has to return to his home country and I shall truly miss him. He is a credit to the profession and anyone fortunate enough to have him treating them is very lucky indeed.

Mr Woo, thank you so very much for everything that you have done for me and for getting my pressures sorted out.

Mr Woo is a wonderful doctor with a lovely manner who could not have been more helpful to my mother in law and myself, he was especially considerate concerning my mother in law's COPD when it came to removing her cataracts and he made sure she had the best possible care at all times. He will be a huge loss to us and many more when he leaves for Malaysia. At every appointment he was friendly, courteous and extremely helpful. We wish him nothing but the very best, Mr Woo is a top class Doctor and an extremely nice person too.

I count myself lucky to have been managed by Mr Woo. I had come to consult him from Nigeria.
He exhibits a high level of professionalism. He is very patient with me and takes time to explain my condition and the proposed management. Within a matter of couple of weeks my glaucoma which until now has been difficult to manage massively improved. He planned surgery but this was cut short because of his imminent return to his native country- Malaysia. In his spirit of honesty and transparency, he took measures to ensure my management does not suffer. He made alternative arrangements while emphasising my safety is ensured at all times.
I appreciate his care and for me it’s with mix feelings he is leaving the UK but I believe the good people of Malaysia also deserves to benefit from this great eye surgeon. I wish him all the best in his future undertakings

Over the last 18 months I've experienced the pleasure of having Dr Woo perform cataract removals on both of my eyes. As someone who can tolerate pain and medical problems in anyone other than myself I count myself as lucky to have Dr Woo as my consultant
surgeon. At all times I was massively impressed with his patience and professionalism in explaining every step of the process, even to the extent of going beyond my basic condition to ensure all issue were addressed, Unfortunately I understand that Dr Woo is returning to Malaysia and whilst this is an enormous gain for that country it is a sad loss to the NHS in this country. I wish him well in anything he enters into. Thank you so much for the improvements in my sight and your care, consideration and professionalism.

I have been teated for cataracts by Mr Woo at Sunderland Eye Hospital during the summer of 2018 and am completely satisfied with his treatment of me.
He has been an excellent professional and I can't praise him enough. The operations were completely painless and speedily done with no problems whatsoever. No after effects were experienced.
Mr Woo is a true gentleman who really cares about his patients and he was prepared to listen to my concerns and was able to put my mind at ease as this was my first operation during my 80 years life.
Having my sight restored almost to normal - I need reading glasses - was so wonderful I can recommend the removal of cataracts to anyone having problems.
Mr Woo was very friendly and seemed really interested in my problem and speaking to the nursing staff I learned that they all held Mr Woo in high regard as both a surgeon and a gentleman.

I can honestly say that Mr Woo is the most professional and patient-focused Consultant I have ever had the privilege of being treated by. After my previous Consultant left the NHS, I was a little nervous about someone new taking over my care but I needn't have worried. I needed surgery fairly urgently and Mr Woo operated to insert a Baerveldt Shunt into my eye just a few weeks after starting at York hospital. The operation went completely to plan and his surgery has since been admired by several Consultants who have seen me for appointments.

I think it's fair to say I have had a bit of a whirlwind journey with my glaucoma and related conditions, but Mr Woo completely laid all my anxieties aside. He was always honest with me and gave me as much information as possible at all stages of my treatment. He provided me with external reference points so I could do my own research but, more importantly, he repeatedly checked to make sure I was comfortable with any decisions that were made and that all my questions were answered. I couldn't have asked for more support.

I know the NHS is under pressure but Mr Woo let this show. He always gave me his undivided attention and as much time as I needed at every appointment. Whenever I saw him he made me feel as though I was his top priority and that he truly cared about doing everything possible to improve my situation. I cannot thank him enough for his continued dedication to helping me. The patient-focused care he delivers is second to none and I am so thankful that I was treated by him. I am truly sorry that he has moved on from York but I know his new patients will be in the best hands and will receive the very highest standards of care. I would recommend Mr Woo unreservedly.
