cancellation
I took out a car insurance policy with this company 2 weeks ago, sent off all the required documents, the first 2 times with no avail, but finally received an email last week saying that all required information had been received and my insurance was now fully valid.
All good you might think....
BUT NO!!!!
Yesterday after working a 13 hour shift I got home and opened a letter from ecar, dated 5/5/2015 but only received on 12/5/2015, informing me that, due to a discrepancy regarding the dates of a MS90 i had openly declared on the form, namely a typing error on my part when i dated the conviction as 01/03/2013 instead of 03/10/2013, my insurance would be cancelled at midnight on 12/5/2015! the very date i received the letter! as you can imagine i was totally gobsmacked! I tried in vain to contact them which as everybody else on here has stated is almost impossible!
I have tried to obtain insurance elsewhere but I am quickly finding out that the action of ecar cancelling my policy has now resulted in my insurance price going through the roof! It may actually result in me having to give up my car!
I cannot honestly believe that something so petty as an obvious typing error would have such a severe outcome!
Why on earth would they think that I had purposely entered the incorrect dates knowing that I was sending them copies of my licence with the correct dates clearly printed on it! it should have been glaringly obvious that this was a genuine mistake, and an email to inquire about the mistake would have rectified the situation quickly and easily!
And why, considering that all correspondence is supposed to be conducted online, did I not receive an email notifying me of the cancellation of my policy instead of a letter through the post, not arriving until the day the policy was due to be cancelled which resulted in me driving around late at night trying to find somewhere safe off-road to store my car until i can somehow sort this mess out!
I am in total despair at how I have been treated, and I am thinking of contacting the Citizens Advice to find out if anything can be done to resolve this!
Any other suggestions would be gratefully received!

UPDATE - Wed 13th May
After sending my feedback to gocompare (I found ecar through them) and requesting that someone from gocompare contacted me, I had a call from ecar today (6 days after cancelling the policy) and they've agreed to a full refund (no cancellation charges applied).
So the message, if you've used them, is to complain to the comparison website which flagged them to you.
Hope this helps other people having to deal with them.
ORIGINAL POST BELOW
I would give them zero stars if I could.
Bought my first ever car yesterday, took out ecar insurance based on go compare rating. Cancelled the insurance 24 hours later.
Their website won't let you log in to check your details and their phone numbers are either (1) premium rate (£1 a minute) which keep you on hold for a while then cut you off before you can speak to anyone, or (2) basically dead phone numbers.
A massive waste of time and money, and I fully expect them to ignore me and try to keep my money.
Terrible!
Threatening to cancel my insurance due to a none fault previous accident despite emailing proof that I was parked up and this wasn't my fault. I've sent them multiple firms of documentation for the other insurer to prove this. I only saved about £20 by using these clowns and will not be using them again! I'm in a situation where they are not responding and I'm unsure if I'm insured or not. Terrible company!
company created by conmen
Worst insurance company I've ever had to deal with in 20 years of driving, and I'm not exaggerating.the webpage is diabolical, and if you phone them you will pay through the nose with a premium rate number, and are badly understaffed so you wait for what seems like an eternity for an answer.I was able to have three shaves and attend a wedding while waiting, lol, but seriously, avoid like the plague.
Absolute con merchants - avoid like the plague
My elderly father was insured with these crooks, he changed his car and ecar insurance repeatedly ignored his request to transfer insurance to the new car. Eventually, he took out another policy with the Post Office and ecar ins wouldn't send on his no claims bonus. It took 10 days of emailing hourly pleading with them to help us, in the meantime my father who is 82 was so stressed by not being able to get through to them to sort it out, he wouldn't eat for 4 days. When they finally sent the ncd to me, they glibly said they would have done a verbal notification to the new insurance company. How the hell anyone gets to speak to these crooks is beyond me! The company is part of the Bright House group, a rent to buy firm which exploits the poor by charging them £17.50 per week to rent a tv for 3 years, actual cost of tv £2730.00 via BH,real cost about £350.00?
They should be closed down.
It should be no stars but this website won't let me leave a review with no stars.
awful
Never use this company, my first years insurance was difficult enough, one department was saying that my insurance was going to be cancelled because I had not produced proof of address, which I had, another department was saying no, that's fine, it's all ok. This year was even worse, you can only speak to them on a £1 a minute phone call, took 38 minutes to get through. Same as last year they again said they were canceling my cover as I had not sent proofs, this email from them looks like junk, no reference to Ecar insurance, so I dismissed it as junk. I have sent five emails in two days asking for clarification without a single response. A terrible terrible company
awful, awful, awful
Please don't insure through Ecar. Whilst the quotes seem good value, as soon as you need them, for anything, you will have to use their premium rate number (£1 per minute) and they WILL make sure that you are on hold for at least 15 minutes for each call. I had to call them twice and ended up spending almost £ 30 on calls to their 'customer service' On the 2nd call, I was so incensed, I cancelled the policy 6 months in. They are unable to tell me how much refund I will receive after they have taken off £ 45 fees + a whole bunch of other charges the agent told me they must also deduct. What a disgrace.
Totally unethical, possibly criminal- a con in every respect. Deserves NO Stars
A week after paying in full for insurance I was informed that a further £101 premium was required for an undisclosed SP 30 my husband received 18 months ago.
Since I found this Company via a comparison website where this information was entered in full I cannot see how they can say it was undisclosed.
I won't deal with such an unethical company so have now requested the policy be cancelled however they warned that there would be a considerable charge to pay so my refund will be nowhere close to the premium I paid.
I went with them to save £50 but now it seems that it will cost me lots more to NOT be insured with them! A very expensive lesson-I hope this sham of a Company is soon exposed for what it is-a total con!
I just had a thought-I'm not saying this is true about ecar insurance but if a company took insurance premiums from Customers, then created a situation where the Customer got so upset they cancelled the policy, would the cancellation charges and other fees be enough to sustain a business?
(DON'T DEAL WITH THEM)
Like many reviews on here, Ecar denied receiving copies of my driving documents even though i sent them numerous times either via post or email. I was only with them a few days in fact a week when i started suspecting something was not quite right, contact links not working on their website forcing me to use a premium rate number, which when i did, the hold times was extortionately long.. in total £54 pounds of calls for nothing other than confirmation that my policy was cancelled.
looking at other reviews only reinforces my decision to cancel as i have no confidence in Ecar should anything had happen to me or my car . i'm still waiting to find out how much my final cancellation changes will be for 7 day poor service, i will update my post when i do....
If you find yourself in the same situation as myself and others try phoning them on 03332224522 this is their new customer policy hotline they answer in about two rings "surprise surprise" and its charged at an normal rate...
Con Artists should be closed down
Absolute con artists!!! They specifically make sure that the login details on line do not work so that you phone their premium rate number at £1.09 per minute to be waiting ages. its very frustrating. If you need to change your policy you will not be able to do it on line like they claim. They sabotage it on purpose. Why this company hasn't been struck off and sued and the directors put in prison for FRAUD i will never know. Never use them!!!
Cowboys
Awful company wrote my car off 3rd October n have had nothing I have emailed & phoned which costs a fortune only to be told that their underwriters in Jebraulter (wrong spelling) is currently 3 weeks behind with paper work. Wish to goodness ad read reveiws on this scam company & saved myself a lot of time & money in the long run. Avoid at all cost people they are a terrible company. Ps one star is too many.
Insurance is cheaper than others
I like Ecarinsurance please give me quote first.
steer clear of ecar
Ecar are a company that professes to do most of its business online. i could never get through to their website and after paying for very very expensive phone calls i discovered they had different website address didn't start with www dot. I had a cheap renewal notice on which my no claims discount was suddenly unprotected when previously it has been protected hence the cheap quote i guess. This company was a nightmare to deal with and i the a
whole experience left me feeling conned?
would recommend that everyone stays clear.
Do not use
Awful company been a year with them nothing but problems they lie saying they haven't received things like my licence no claims etc even though it's been sent RECORDED delivery FOUR times rubbish
STAY WELL CLEAR
STAY WELL CLEAR YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED SHOWER OFF CROOKS COULD NOT WAIT TO GET RID OF THEM GAVE ME HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE WITH ALL THE CRAP THEY PUT ME THROUGH OVER A £1 A MINUTE TO SPEAK TO THEM WASTE OF TIME I WAS GIVEN A NUMBER BY A FRIEND 01454634887 PHONED ON SKYPE FOR FREE
DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY
ecarinsurance made a mistake regarding my No Claims Bonus. I have 4 years and they issued a letter saying that I have 3 years. Even though I sent them proof that I had 3 years NCD prior to insuring with them, which I know they must have had from my previous insurer in order to validate my policy, they refuse to issue an amended NCD letter - all they have to do is change the word 'three' to 'four'! I have phoned them and emailed them several times and they just send me a link to their website which gives a drop down menu and doesn't allow you to explain what you want them to do. The problem is still unresolved as they just sent yet another link in response to my last email to them.
CRAP!!!!!!!!!
DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE AN ONLINE SERVICE BUT UNABLE TO COMPLETE CHANGES ONLINE. RANG HELPLINE AT A DISGUSTING PREMIUM RATE TO BE TOLD I HAD TO USE THE ONLINE SERVICE. VERY UNHELPFUL STAFF. POLICY INCLUDED A COURTESY CAR WHICH NEVER APPEARED! 3 WEEK AFTER ACCIDENT CAR STILL OUTSIDE MY HOME UNDRIVABLE AND NO FURTHER WITH SETTLEMENT.
If I could rate them zero, I would.
Well, I'm just off the phone to ecar (second time today) and once again it was like talking to myself. Their customer service operators become very rude and slightly aggressive should you dare to disagree or challenge them in any way.
Thing is, my car died today, and I want to find out how much it'll cost me to cancel my policy. Of course I wouldn't even have this car had not ecar refused to insure the one I bought to replace it when it failed its mot this year. Luckily the person I got the new one from took it back, but I ended up paying more than my current car is worth to keep it on the road, purely because ecar had 'changed their criteria and I was no longer eligible to insure a vehicle with them' (their words) Therefore I had to keep the policy as I couldn't afford to pay their extortionate cancellation fee( which was more than the cost of the entire years insurance premium I'd taken out 4 months before) plus the cost of a new car plus the insurance deposit with a new company.
Anyway.. I digress. My issue today is I just cannot log on to their site, which kinda defeats the whole online thing. I called customer services (using a third party app so I didn't pay the scandalous costs) and was told that they could log in using my details their end so it must be my fault.
As I'm using an ipad 4 and an iphone 5s I asked if perhaps it might be an issue with my devices, that maybe their site doesn't work with apple devices but was told that's not the case. I suggested that an online only company should maybe.. Just maybe.. Think about developing mobile apps if indeed they're serious about the whole concept?
Anyway, got nowhere re the login issues and discovered.. Surprise surprise.. That if I do have to replace my car this time, it'll be a lot cheaper just to keep paying the payments until policy end.. Which luckily for me is mid jan.
I just cannot wait to be done with this company, and even if I do have to replace my car now, I would rather take out new insurance and pay double premiums, as by the time they've slapped on their admin fees etc, that'll work out cheaper.
Avoid at all costs. I agree that they appear to make more money from either erroneously cancelling clients policies and making them pay for the privilege, or forcing you to cancel yourself as no other option is available.. Or like me, spending twice what your cars worth to keep it on the road as it's cheaper than cancelling.
Thing is.. They actually weren't a lot cheaper than some other companies, so in future, I will, same as everyone else, be trawling the net for reviews before I sign up.
scammers
Instead of renewing my insurance, I got a new quote from a third party website as i moved to a new address. After buying online, I called to ask if I still need to send copies of driving licences and NCD as my previous insurer were them. Caroline said no she will update it in their system. 1 wk later im still waiting for my motor insurance certificate. I logged in and checked online to see that they have reverted my address back to my previous address. I tried to change the address online but was asked for additional £108. digusted, I called them and told them of what had happened. They would not listen and blamed me. They even told me that there was no Caroline working there. I ended up cancelling. They charge high for admin fee and cancellation fees. I am still waiting for my refund. I don't even know how much refund I will get for the 7 days insurance. It makes you think that when you call their customer service to complain they will give you the option to cancel or pay up, their customer service people probably gets commission on cancellation. I think that's what they truly sell and make their money on.
