I thought long and hard before writing this review. I have previously written a review on Google detailing my problems with this company. Due to a breakdown of the vehicle we lost some nights’ prepaid camping fees and the company agreed to reimburse this amount to us. That was fine and we were pleased. Unfortunately because I had written an honest review ( and to be quite frank the review was kinder than it should have been because like a previous renter wrote here the quality of the vehicle ruined our whole camping experience and as for Lauren - well to say that customer service is not her strong point would be kind) of Awesome Campers they are refusing to refund me the money they promised me until I take down my Google review and sign a document saying I will not say anything bad about the company. On top of this as we returned our vehicle we encountered a couple who were told that they would have their money refunded to them because the vehicle did not seem roadworthy. They were told they would receive a full refund in front of us and we heard all this but Awesome then said they would not return the money. It was a very bad situation and they also had to sign this for m and take down the review in order to finally get some money back. I have thought and thought about this and I do not think that someone should be forced into taking down an honest review in order to receive money which was promised to them. I would have reluctantly signed the form stating that I would not say anything else about this company but taking down the review is a step too far. So here I am saying to people be very very careful before you choose to rent from this company. Understand that the vehicle will be old and in some cases according to the reviews I read before booking will work fine but I have now read reviews on TripAdvisor and other platforms where people describe just how bad these vehicles are and although I was told that I had chosen a budget company I never expected to encounter the problems we did. I was also told that had they known my age they would have told me not to rent from them - they knew my age as we spent a long time electronically sending them all our information before collection. This company ruined our holiday, not only because of the condition of the vehicle, but because of the lack of customer service and then asking me to take the review down is just not acceptable. Be very very careful if you choose Awesome Campers. Read all the reviews before you decide and understand exactly the kind of service you might receive.

The good, the bad and the ugly

The good:
Did a campervan relocation from Melbourne to Adelaide. The van was very old, but it got the job done, and the mattresses were surprisingly comfy. Communication was good and drop-off was easy as.

The bad:
I plugged my phone into the van’s bargain-bin stereo USB-C port. The moment I unplugged it, my phone’s touch screen completely died and the screen replacement cost $300.

Stick to Bluetooth for audio and use a 12V cigarette lighter charger if you value your phone.

The ugly:
When I raised it, the company took no responsibility and didn’t seem overly concerned that the same thing could happen to future renters.

Not so awesome campers

NEVER rent with Awesome Campers

NEVER rent with Awesome Campers — they will cancel your booking and leave you stranded for the trip you’re planning. After having my reservation confirmed for over two months (since August) and less than a month before starting my road trip, they cancelled my booking supposedly because the vehicle “won’t be available” (with almost a month to go? How does that make any sense?).

On top of that, they didn’t even offer me a similar campervan — they just cancelled it and left me hanging, not caring at all if I’ve already booked campsites or external activities, forcing me to look for something else just a month before my trip.

When you contact them (by email, because they don’t answer the phone), they simply tell you it’s been cancelled and that you’ll get your money back. Seriously? That’s their idea of customer service? Absolutely terrible service.

I’m attaching screenshots of this s*** company’s email response to prove that this is real and not a fake review.

Do NOT book anything with this company unless you want to waste your time and money. I’m sure there are far more reliable and professional companies out there — this one should honestly be shut down.

Please note that our phones were not answered yesterday as it was a public holiday and our offices were closed. We’ve checked and didn’t receive a voicemail requesting a callback today.

Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, several of our campervans were recently involved in accidents and written off. This has significantly reduced our available fleet, and as a result, we had no remaining vehicles of any model to offer you at the time.

We made the decision to cancel your booking now—over a month in advance—so that you had as much notice as possible to make alternate arrangements.

We genuinely apologise for the inconvenience caused. While situations like this are rare, we do our best to communicate promptly and refund customers immediately when a cancellation is unavoidable. We have many happy travellers each year, and we’re sorry that this experience did not reflect that.

Très bonne expérience

Nous avons loué un van avec mon copain pour 45 jours. Malheureusement au bout d’un mois une urgence familiale nous a obligé à rentrer plus tôt en France et nous avons donc rendu le van plus tôt et nous n’avons pas eu de dédommagement pour les 3 semaines de perdu. Nous sommes un peu déçu sur ce point car la somme étais quand même importante et ce n’étais pas notre volonté de rendre le van.
Sinon le van étais parfait nous avions le van bully et il étais super sympa.
Nous avons fait cairns à Melbourne et rien a redire il étais parfaitement équipé. Attention un van comme celui ci consomme beaucoup.
Vous pourrez trouver un peu partout des endroits où dormir dans le queensland mais attention en descendant vers le sud les endroits pour dormir se font plus rare.

A word of advice: don't rent a vehicle from this company.

This company will almost certainly cost you more than you expect to pay when you reserve your vehicle.

Let me explain: we booked a campervan for one month (round trip between Sydney and Melbourne).
When we received the vehicle, check-in took less than 5 minutes. Why was this? The rain! We were given a very brief explanation of the car, and the impact check was carried out extremely quickly.

What happened?
1) We found the ceiling window completely cracked, and obviously no mention of this in the check-in. It's impossible to miss when you're a rental company.

2) The tap was faulty, leaking as soon as the water was turned on (a pump system).

3) The speedometer was faulty. We discovered the problem after receiving 3 fines for exactly the same "speeding"! As soon as we received these fines, we took care to drive 10 km/h slower than the speedometer indicated (faulty) and to our surprise: no new fines! We did several tests with different GPS units and the result was the same. As a bonus: a $75 fine administration fee, which makes you wonder if this is not done on purpose.

4) The red "door left open" warning light came on after just one day's driving and for no reason. We carried out several checks on the vehicle, but everything was normal and closed properly. We contacted customer service (advertised as available 24 hours a day) who took the liberty of replying to us 1 week later! Our questions and concerns didn't seem to bother them any more than that.

Naturally, we reported all these problems to the company when we filed the claim. No reaction from them: they simply wrote down the information on a small piece of paper and told us that everything was in order. Check-out took 2 minutes! The vehicle check completely forgotten.
I e-mailed customer service again, but they didn't take the problem on board. The only reply: "We didn't notice any problem. How can they see a problem when no check is made? How can we believe them when they have been negligent and dishonest from the start?

Apart from these problems, the car is absolutely unsafe. When we drove uphill, the car made worrying noises and didn't seem to have the power needed for this type of journey!

In short: go to the competition!
I no longer have any confidence in car rental companies.

je n'ai pas été remboursé de ma caution après 1 mois et je dois me battre !

Ne réservez jamais avec cette entreprise !!!
Au début de mon voyage, j'ai du payer une caution de 500$, nous sommes actuellement 1 mois après la FIN de mon trip n'a toujours pas été remboursé !
Je les avait appelé avant le début du voyage pour leur demander pourquoi ils prélevaient les sous et la femme au téléphone avait été très méprisante à mon égard mais visiblement j'avais bien raison de me méfier.
À la fin, tout allait parfaitement bien avec le van, la femme nous a dit : "vous serez remboursé sous 7 business days". Après 7 jours sans mon argent, j'ai appelé et seulement à ce moment la, ils ont déclenché le remboursement. Depuis, toujours rien sur mon compte en banque après 10 jours !!!
M'auraient-ils remboursé si je n'avais pas appelé ? Et maintenant, ou sont passé mes 500$ ?
Est-ce une arnaque pour nous prendre 500$ de plus ?
je n'ai pas la réponse à ces questions mais ce que je sais c'est que plus d'un mois après, je n'ai toujours pas les sous dont j'ai besoin et j'ai été méprisé par leur service après vente !!!
Très mécontente, je suis une jeune fille de 21 ans qui a besoin de cet argent et ne sais pas si elle reverra la couleur de cet argent un jour.

Aussi, nous avions loué un certain van et quelle fut notre surprise en arrivant de voir que nous avions été sous classé, et que ce n'était pas du tout celui que nous avions loué.
Encore une fois, J'AI dû faire des démarches pour être remboursé de la différence car ils n'allaient pas le faire d'eux-même...

I am sorry to hear you had some issues, when you return the campervan, we do say it can take up to 10 days for the bond to be cancelled, we do not take the money we only freeze it, sometimes with the banks and if they are not Australian bank accounts they can take longer than the 10 days, we do not steal anyones money nor are we defrauding anyone. its just a process and sometimes it may take some time, again we do apologise for any inconviences. Avoid at all costs!!

Where to begin.

We booked through Imoova which I have no problems with. The journey was from Brisbane to cairns for 8 days. When we arrived at the site in Brisbane, the gates were locked with no one in. Originally we were told to arrive at 9am which we did. They then mentioned that the car wasn’t ready, needed a service and that we had to wait 4 hrs so we missed a full day basically. Once the car arrived it was about 100 years old, damage all over the car and mechanically not okay. The funny part is, they expect you to check the oil and coolant everyday……. That just shows the level of quantity we are dealing with. The next worst part is dropping it off, if you are doing this in cairns you’ll find yourself in the middle of nowhere with zero help from the company to get back into cairns. We waited nearly 2.5 hrs for a taxi. The hilarious part is that they take a $3000 deposit which is more than what the cars worth. Surprised they still have cash flow to operate. Please take my advice and look elsewhere. (This is the first review I’ve ever done in 28 years).

I am surprised Sean that you have gone out of your way to write this review, but we do have the option of answering you also, and I do not like making it tic for tac and this is not what where about, but it's just disappointing when the truth is not told.

This was a FREE booking(Relocation from Brisbane to Cairns) it was booked the day before the pickup, when Sean came to our office at 9am the vehicle was not ready and we had apologised that because of the last minute booking we had to get it ready for our PAID customer in Cairns, and if he mind waiting for a few hours while we got it ready, he did agree and we even sent himself and his partner over to the local cafe and paid for there breakfast ($65) while he waited for us to get it ready. when it was ready to go, everything was explained to them that they needed to bring it back clean inside and outside and check the oil and water as per all our bookings, Unfortunately they did not bring it back clean, we do normally charge a fee of $150 but because of the time that it took to get the vehicle ready, we have waived this fee.

It's a shame that we have to go down this path, when really it was not necessary, they received a FREE Campervan for 8 days, the vehicle did not break down, they slept in the van and they enjoyed the trip. why make these comments, well i suppose each to their own.

I had a great experience with Awesome

I had a great experience with Awesome! Communication was fast, friendly and very transparent. Upon arrival we got a very thorough tour of the vehicle (Goanna). It was already an older model but everything worked perfectly and we even had new equipment and a completely new fridge. Goanna brought us back safely from our travels from Cairns to Brisbane and we had the best time on this roadtrip!

They notified me well in advance that the campervan was involved in an incident and so wouldn't be able to be ready for my pickup. Also arranged for my non refundable deposit to be returned from the booking agent. Excellent customer service

Charlie: the perfect travel companion!

Wonderful experience with Awesome Campers! Me and my husband drove for nearly 7000km from Perth to Brisbane! Our van was an Elite van called Charlie and it was just the most amazing travel companion ever! The process from booking to drop off was smooth and easy! Staff was kind both at Perth and Brisbane offices! We made amazing memories with Charlie and we felt sad when we had to drop it off after 50 days together. Awesome campers has been one of the best companies that we have ever used! Highly recommended!

Awesome Campervan - 17th Jan- 2nd Feb 2023

This is the fifth time I have used awesome Campervan from different locations Sydney, Cairns, Perth, & Adelaide and at each they have gone out of their way. Once even leaving the keys to the camper under a brick for collection, due to strange flight times, the vans maybe not be as posh as others but they give you that sense of adventure kitted out with essentials and always mechanically sound. Can’t fault the value for money. Will be using them again in the future

Booking process ok - car not

Booking the van was easy and quick.
What I didn't like so much is that you make the customer complete combersome online-forms, including upoading of drivers license into an unstable system which didn't operate properly. This was a very time consuming and annoying process, I was not aware of at the time of making the booking.
Further, our van was in a very bad condition when we picked it up, just to mention a few things:
- the passenger seat was loose and a safety hazard (fortunately we noticed this before we left the depot and they fixed it there, which took them about half an hour)
- the interior of the car was very dirty, including the matresses and the curtains
- the fridge was in a very bad state (rusty and dirty)
- overall, we spent at least an hour washing and cleaning everything
- many pieces of the wooden furniture inside the car were loose, with screws coming out (which posed a danger of getting hurt)
- there were three chips in the windscreen, which luckily did not grow, but could have done so anytime, but which was a safety hazard.
- there was not enough air in the tyres
- there was a problem with the heating of the car such that constantly hot air was coming out of the ventilation, even with the heating switched off; so even in moderate temperatures, we always needed have the aircon switched on
- the windscreen wipers were squeaking and did not wipe properly
- at some point the lever opening the fuel lid got loose, with the effect that we couldn't fill in fuel anymore; luckily I was able to repair the lever by myself
- the back door of the car was very difficult to close properly
- the sliding door moved very hard as well and was difficult to close

the El Grande was in disgraceful condition…

the El Grande as supplied in Perth had been in an accident parts of the body held together with cable ties and glue.The washbasin did not work it had been connected to the water supply with a hose which had been cut and unsuccessfully repaired with duct tape. The agent could not assure us the passenger airbag worked. The rear windscreen wiper was missing.The passenger interior door pull was "mended" with cable ties and glue but had a jagged sharp edge I had to use tape to make it safe.The agent said the spare tyre had uneven wear but was still legal.The mattress covers were torn and it looked grubby. No explanation was given about some of the child safety switch on the sliding cabin door which became engaged while we were both in the bed . My agile 92yo wife had to climb over the front seat to let us out .The outside handle still worked, a mechanic at the next town , authorised by Awesome to fix any problem showed us how it worked .The mugs bowls and plates were chipped and cracked , unsanitery condition. Because of minor electrical flaws - switches that did not work we returned the van to Brisbane 2 days early the flooding rains were an issue for us.There was no drivers manual with the van. I requested compensation of arounf $450 as the van in no way reflected the product shown on their website . We recieved an insulting offer of $110 and a legal document to sign which prevented us from talking about our very unsatifactory experince . I tried to have someone in authority at awesome talk to me about this but no one contacted us just silence , very rude . Was there anything good ? well the engine transmission and stove all worked well .

Great van for a very reasonable price!

We hired an Awesome Camper for 2 weeks and the experience was very positive. Sure the van isn't super flash, but either was the price. We had absolutely no problems with the van and were very happy with our decision to hire from Awesome. Prior to pick up I had lots of questions and Lauren was always so helpful. Can highly recommend .. You'll get great value for your money!

Friendly staff, always ready to help. The van was clean and everything that you need for camping was there. I would not hesitate to use their service again.
