SCAM

I adopted a kitten and opted in to receive a free month of insurance with PetFirst and since then have called over 5 times in order to cancel my policy and have my card removed from file, to this day they tell me they can only cancel a policy through an email form that requires access codes that THEY REFUSE TO PROVIDE YOU WITH. I ask to speak to a manager every time and am told that they are busy or on another call. I have lost hundreds of dollars over this and am taking legal action at this point.

Don't give your business to them

I was extremely terrified of signing up with these people after reading all the horrendous reviews, but there is a part of you that always thinks- they cant be that bad. Well, they proved that they are indeed, worthy of all the criticism. I was looking up pet insurance options, and after getting emails from them after they got my information from the microchip chip I registered on, I decided to sign up. Keep in mind they advertise of their immediate coverage on accidents, and I thought that would come in handy. Well, my coverage began midnight, and lo and behold, in a strange twist of fate that morning, my pet had an accident- he ate a ball and had to undergo immediate surgery. Keep in mind, technically the accident coverage had begun at this point. So I submitted the claim and provided the documentation. And after sitting on the paperwork for 20 days, they denied the claim, stating this is an illness, and my coverage wasn't in effect then. I called customer service, and the lady I explained to agreed at first with my dispute, then realizing she shouldn't have, and quickly changed her tune. Such terrible ethics, to promise customers one thing, make them sign up and not deliver on your promise. Especially when you are counting on the payment during these hard times. Now I am going through a lengthy appeals process, that will probably take forever and I will mostly get denied again. What a sad sad joke. I dont know how this company has ANY customers, their responses are robotic and their customer success team does not seem to care one bit. Needless to say, I am canceling my policy and I would suggest, you run away from these unscrupulous folks.

FEAR

I have 10 cats and have been a member off and on with PetFirst for over a decade. Once in a blue moon, I would take a cat to the vet for a minor injury, and I Would simply snail mailed my claim and got reimbursed almost a month later. PetFirst is really an ACCIDENT/ INJURY policy.
One of my cats was diagnosed with chronic renal failure and another one had a minor injury in one month and PetFirst paid out a little over $2400.00. LITERALLY- The staff turned Getting reimbursed into a Part - Time job. I thought that it would be easier submitting my claims through emails. PetFirst would bombard me with emails. I would send them one email, and I would receive 3-5 vague emails stating that they received my claim with the exception of when they needed additional information. Then The staff at PetFirst wouldn’t contact me. I was checking my account on a daily basis to see if the staff at PetFirst were missing legal documents even though I Know for a fact that I dotted all of my i’s and crossed my T’s. What the staff at PetFirst wasn’t banking on is that I keep all of my legal documents. Whenever PetFirst made a claim that they never received an invoice or medical record, I had all of the hard copies in an envelope. I love the story about how my vet faxed over my records to them, and Maggie, the customer service agent, told me that they never received the medical notes. She told me that their fax machine was malfunctioning in The month of December 2019. I hate when that happens, especially during the holiday season. PetFirst was issuing confirmation numbers to my vet, but they Would claim that they never received the records. The vets put a lot of stress on me and PetFirst turned getting reimbursed into a Part - time job. The end result is that I wasn’t making logical medical decisions in behalf of my cat and had her euthanized. Had I just been able to focus on my cat’s health and wait a month to be reimbursed, I wonder if my cat would have lived a longer life. I have a lot of “What If” questions on my mind. If I wasn’t being stressed out by the vets, I was spending hours on the phone with the staff at PetFirst who have a list of lies That they are probably reading off a wall. In all honesty, I’m writing this review when my emotions are still raw. I have only been grieving for one full day, and I wish I was dead. The Emotional pain involved driving to the vet knowing that you are having your loved one euthanized and being there for the entire procedure is excruciating. And to think that I will have to go through this process for my other 9 cats that are still alive is more than what I bargained for. I don’t know if I want to take that journey with PetFirst battling with me every step of the way to pay legitimate claims. The day that I had Samantha, my cat euthanized, was the same day that Petfirst sent me an email stating that they were denying my legitimate claim unless I resubmitted the invoices again. On the day that I had Samantha euthanized, I was making decisions based on fear.
——

what happens if you have a legitimate claim for an ongoing illness (chronic renal failure) for your pet? PetFirst sent me an email increasing my annual premium from $645.00 for 3 cats to $903.00 AFTER I cancelled Samantha’s policy. In spite of the fact that I had formally cancelled Samantha’s policy because she was deceased, her policy was pending to be renewed in May of 2020.
————

you’ve been forewarned about Petfirst insurance company. I have to resubmit the invoices for 2/8, 1/26 and 1/16. All of the claims are in 2020. I have 90 days to submit a claim. They just put the claim for 2/29/2019 for FUN. I never submitted a claim on 2/29/2019 and it’s past the 90 day filing period because today is 3/9/2020. I cancelled all of my policies effective today. Petfirst is an Accident / injury policy. You can buy a better accident / injury policy with Progressive pet insurance for $6.00 a month.

Scam

Whatever you do... search around for pet insurance before you settle with PetFirst. I have been a customer for over 11 years and over the last 5 years they have increased my monthly premium $25-35. No additional benefits offered. If you want to reduce your premium they will transfer you to a salesperson whom job is to make sure they meet their bottom line so he will offered to increase your deductible to decrease premium. Also, this insurance company offer no REAL incentives. Only incentive offered to me was .. get this... if you DON’T file a claim within a calendar year you get a $25 decrease off your deductible. PLEASE do your homework before selecting a insurance company for your baby.

BEWARE

BEWARE! Horrible company! My kitten had a terrible upper respiratory infection where he was sick and not eating for 3 days in a row so I took him to the emergency room knowing that I would be covered with insurance from petfirst no problem. I filed the claim and didn't hear from them at all. I contacted live chat and they told me that the claim was processing. The next thing I did was call customer service when I didn't hear anything further and they told me that they would call me back and never did. I finally got news after a week of waiting that the claim was denied because the kitten was noted to have been sneezing before he was adopted. He was absolutely healthy and fine when I got him it wasn't until later that he came down with the upper respiratory infection and stopped eating. They said this was a pre-existing condition!? Do your research and read the reviews before you invest your money in this company. The Humane Society does not adopt out sick animals. I would not adopt a sick animal either!

Horrible service

Horrible service. Adopted a dog and we were given Petfirst Insurance to cover any issues within the first 30 days of adopting.

Well...our dog had worms in his poo, so we took him to the vet to get him fixed and de-wormed.

Filed a claim with Petfirst for the Dr visit and the meds and we were denied.

I called to find out why. First I was told bc it was a preventative visit. So I went to the Vet and got the papers showing that it was in fact not preventative but to fix the worm issue.

Called back and was denied...for a preexisting condition because I created an account and took him to the vet the same day.

That was the whole point of the insurance was to take care of any issue that the adopted dog had.

Luckily...they made our decision on who to use long-term for future pet insurance. We took our business elsewhere.

Don’t waste your money!!!!

First let me apologize for the length of this post. I want everyone to know what a ripoff this company is through my direct experience with them and I want to make sure I communicate the facts, all the facts, correctly. A couple months ago I adopted a puppy (10 months old) and had him chipped, took out a Home Away plan should he get lost. Somehow, PetFirst Pet Insurance became aware of my adoption and contacted me offering a one month free pet insurance plan for my puppy, naturally hoping I would continue the coverage after a month. I have never paid for pet insurance for our fur babies and thought why not take advantage of at least the free month. After the new puppy was home for just a week and half something happened to her. She was in the fenced in area off my kitchen and I heard this horrible cry/scream from her. I rushed out to her and she was crying with her left front leg lifted. I immediately called my vet to get her in for evaluation. After X-ray, it was determined that somehow she tore a ligament in that shoulder. I’m pleased to say it did heal quickly after following my vet’s plan. I remembered I had this pet insurance policy and at almost $400 for my puppies treatment I was excited that I agreed to this policy and quickly submitted a claim. First, it was a nightmare satisfying what they wanted. I followed the instructions for the claim in the documentation noted for a claim but every time I tried following up on the status they wanted something else not noted in the original requirement. Weeks went by...almost another month, and every time I tried to follow up I was told it will just be a couple more days. Of course the first month free cake and went but I decided not to pay for the policy to continue until I saw how they handled this claim and boy am I glad I didn’t. Yesterday, I received an email that said my claim was denied and I could contact them to learn why. So I did. I wound up with this very arrogant woman on the other end that told me it was denied because the injury was a pre-existing injury? I was “what???!!!”. She told me “my vet stated in the report that I had said my puppy was screaming and crying when I contacted them”. I said of course she was....she tore a ligament!!!! That’s why I took her to the vet and this is what I told the vet. This arrogant woman argued with me for another few minutes until she realized that reasoning made no sense as well and then said “oh, I’m sorry. It wasn’t that reason it was denied it was because it happened two days short of the two week waiting period”!!!!! I told her I have no clue what she was talking about regarding a two week waiting period. I told her I was offered a month’s free plan and no one said anything about a waiting period. I asked her when the policy expired. She gave me the date which was 30 days from when I agreed to it. I then explained to her that this is really not a 30 day (month) if free coverage then, it’s only 15 days!!!! She was completely lost for words, argued a bit more with me and then finally said “It is what it is and the claim is denied”..... Bottom line I have never run into such a scam. Clearly it was denied because they saw I didn’t renew with a paid plan and they did not want to pay for anything on their nickel. This company is nothing but a ripoff. Save your money or make sure you really check out a reputable insurance company before you take out a policy. And certainly cross PetFirst Pet Insurance off your list!!!!

I decided to try this insurance

I decided to try this insurance, since the local shelter gives one month free when you adopt from them... well, it was a huge mistake! About 2 months after we adopted our sweet dog, her vet found and recommended the removal/biopsy of three mammary tumors. After I submitted all vet paperwork and shelter documents, and the vet hospital submitted to them twice, Petfirst just kept emailing me that the claim was denied for lack of documentation. When I called them, they said to resubmit, then one person said they'd check directly with our vet... still received denied emails. I've cancelled my policy, because they make it so difficult to get service. I believe that's part of their scam, so they mostly take money in and deny mist claims. Insurance shoppers be very aware of thurs place!

Surgery was classified as routine hence denied

Our dog underwent a surgery, we submitted a claim with all the receipts and necessary papers. Claim was classified as routine (a surgery, really?) and denied. Scammers. Cancelling my policy now, lost money on this useless insurance by paying a year policy in advance+surgery bills out of pocket.

Impossible to get claims paid

While the coverage is supposedly good, they do everything they can to avoid paying claims. They constantly insist the health records are incomplete or insufficient. I've been fighting for over 4 months. They finally told me they had what they needed and had reopened the claim. I checked online and the claim was never reopened. Still trying to get my $1600. Be very careful with this company.

WASTE OF MONEY

WASTE OF MONEY! I adopted my pet on 7/1/18. The vet notes from the adoption agency do not state anything about a pre-existing condition, even though he had been monitored for 2 weeks prior to adoption and "no health concerns were observed." Cut to his first vet visit on 7/13/18 where the new vet notes state he has had diarrhea since adoption. Diarrhea is now considered a pre-existing condition and not one vet visit or med is being covered by this company when the vet notes say my pet has diarrhea! Customer service won't budge on this, and it takes two business days to talk with a supervisor.

Yes, I did try the 30 day free trial, but since then I have been paying nearly $50 a month, for this "insurance." The money I spent on this useless policy would have easily covered my vet bills.

This company and plan are a scam and…

This company and plan are a scam and joke. Do not fall for it. I signed up for their standard insurance and added a routine care rider. My dog Olive started getting skin allergies 2-3 months after we adopted her. She has been getting treatment and I have been submitting the claims in order to meet her per incident deductible. I was told after a claim was denied in January that we still had not met it but that her allergies would be covered once we did.

Flash forward to March and this horrible company is now trying to claim that it was a pre existing condition that she had since adoption, even though NO claims had been filed regarding allergies prior to December and we adopted her in October (well past their waiting period for coverage). We just submitted $300 worth of allergy related issues and NONE will be covered even though I was told they would be. I spoke to multiple reps at PetFirst who all could not somehow understand my frustration with this situation. The manager (Sean) claims that our vet put down on one of the records that it was a pre existing condition. I called our Vet and they flat out denied this.

Typical scam of an insurance company not trying to cover anything by saying it is pre-existing. This company is the reason why no one trusts pet insurance and thinks it's too good to be true - it is. Do not waste your time. I could have been saving $54 a month rather than blowing money on a shady company who clearly does not give one ounce of care about my dog/pet.
