Much harder than it needs to be

First off, slightly sub-par bikes, even for secondhand, but the prices are fair. I started with trying to rent a bike, but after charging me and making me go look for it, it wasn't at the indicated depot. The only kind of refund they offered was in the form of Oxbykes credit, which keeps you stuck with them. The fact that no real refunds are offered isn't made clear on their website.
The website is a buggy mess, confirmation emails don't get sent, and when I tried to get help from the Livechat they were quite slow to reply. Also extreme nosiness for the simple act of purchasing a SECONDHAND bicycle: they asked for a driving license, two emails, my phone number, a selfie, and student card.
At least I have a bike now, but be ready for a lot of needless complications with them.

To clarify a few points regarding our process:
1. Identification Requirements: When booking or purchasing a bike, we do ask for identifications. This is clearly noted at the checkout page. The reason for this is to confirm ownership and traceability, as bike theft is unfortunately common in Oxford. This ensures that bikes go to genuine renters or buyers and keeps everything secure for everyone.

2. Refunds & Credits: While we generally issue refunds in the form of OxBykes credits (so you can easily book another bike in the future), you can absolutely request a full refund back to your account instead if you prefer. This just needs to be requested via our live chat support, and we’ll process it accordingly.

3. Bike Availability: Occasionally, errors can occur for example, previous customers may not return a bike to the correct depot, or they might encounter an issue with the bike but fail to report it. This can affect the next user, as we rely on customer feedback to ensure the bikes are ready to ride. If no feedback is submitted, we assume the bike is in good condition. We’re working hard to ensure all returned bikes are in proper condition and at the right locations. You’re also welcome to contact us beforehand to double-check that a bike is available at the depot before heading out.

4. Communication & Support: At times, our support chat may be undergoing quick maintenance updates, usually after 8pm, which can temporarily affect response times. In addition, we offer multiple channels to reach us, including WhatsApp, Email, Facebook, Instagram so you can always contact us anytime for assistance.

We truly appreciate your understanding of the identification and security measures, they’re in place to protect both our customers and the bikes. We also appreciate your patience while using our service and hope your bike is serving you well. If any issue arises with the bike, please don’t hesitate to book an appointment with our mechanic. They’ll sort out any problems at no cost within the 30-day warranty period.

OxBykes is honestly the best! Pretty cheap great bikes!

OxBykes is honestly the best! From rentals to purchases, everything is so affordable and super easy to access. The workshop and support team are always there whenever I need help, which makes such a difference. I love that I can swap bikes anytime and get support any time of day. As a student, it means a lot to have something so reliable, thank you so much, OxBykes!

Ox bikes!

Pretty cheap and easy and to get a bike. And what is best, is that they recycle bikes. So all that rusty bikes that some one forget. They bring in to life again. Oxford it’s a city for ride. Don’t hesitate to click Ox.

Wonderful experience

I've been so grateful for OxBykes! I've purchased and returned a bike, as well as rented bikes on several occasions, and all have been great experiences. Picking up a bike is made incredibly easy, and if ever anything is wrong with a bike, you can easily swap for another one, and I've always managed to find one I'm happy with. And the staff are absolutely incredible. Whenever I've run into challenges and needed support, they've been there to offer immediate assistance (truly immediate, and no matter what time of day!) which was both very kind and very helpful. I'll definitely keep renting with them whenever I'm back in Oxford, and would highly recommend!

FRAUDULENT Never gave me bikes I paid for and never refunded me

Bought a bike and went to go pick it up but could not find it. Went back multiple times, spending hours looking for it. They told me to just cancel my purchase and buy a different bike that was there. Not a single bike on the website was there at the depot. I canceled my purchase, bought a different bike, and went to a different smaller Oxbyke depot elsewhere on campus. I spent hours looking for it on two different occasions. I am a phd student, and I have very little time and very little money. They later told me that the bike I had spent so much time looking for is unridable and therefore not where they said it was, and I could not buy/collect it. It has been almost two months and they still have not refunded me for both bikes and are now no longer replying to my emails and whatsapp messages.

Don't 'sell' your bike here

Brought a bike to the Wolfson College location and agreed to sell it. Was told I would be wired the funds, but more than 2 weeks later I haven't received it. Website says bank transfers are usually done same day. No response to emails requesting more information.

As per the Terms agreed when you booked online, our standard processing for seller payments is within 60 days, though in most cases payments are made within 14 days. I believe we have already sent your payment on the 14th day, but sometimes it can take a bit for banks to process it. The reason it can sometimes take longer is due to the volume of bikes sold to us and the daily payout limits set by Stripe, which is the system we use to process payments. This ensures that all sellers are accommodated fairly and securely.

We always aim to process payments as quickly as possible and make sure everyone is aware of the timeframe upfront. I hope this helps clarify the process, and we truly appreciate your understanding and patience on the process.

Unless you want to feel like the struggling hero of a classical epic, DO NOT USE

I’ve had so many frustrating experiences with this company over the last few months that it feels like a personal attack now.

My WhatsApp messages with Byke customer support take us from the website glitching and refunding the wrong bike (three times), to a refund of over a hundred pounds taking three months to process, to tonight’s saga of £94 being taken from my account with no explanation (and a later unfounded accusation of theft). Whenever victory seemed near, I was met with another trial in the form of an absent refund, or a charge four months later for a missing bike that was verified to have been returned at the time.

My experience with Byke has forced me to learn skills I had no desire to attain. I have had to adopt a formal register with which I am incredibly uncomfortable, and be more forceful than I thought I could be, and also probably a little bit rude (which was the only method which actually had any effect). Further to this, I’ve moved from accountancy, trying to calculate and receive refunds, into private detective and lawyer, trying to defend myself against an accusation of theft, and prove my innocence (which THEY THEMSELVES verified four months ago).

Throughout the many conversations I’ve had to go through with customer service, I’ve been made to feel like a nuisance, despite having caused none of the problems which impacted me. When, tonight, I was told that a bike I returned three months ago had gone missing, and I was charged £94 as a result, I felt insulted. I’ve now been told that I will be charged if the bike has been stolen, even though I have provided evidence that it has been returned. This company has insanely bad business practices given that they’re willing to validate a refund and then revoke it months later, taking a payment with absolutely no explanation. If this isn’t rectified soon, prepare for televised coverage of the ensuing proceedings.

Please, please, please, don’t use this company to buy a bike. Please. If the bike works for you then you’ll be fine, but if not (and the ones I bought had faulty brakes or punctured tyres), you’re screwed, and should take up jogging now. It’s your only chance of getting anywhere on time.

Regarding the £94 charge for the missing bike, the reason for this is that the bike was not locked at all upon return. The photos you submitted clearly show it wasn’t secured, which is why it went missing when a new buyer came to collect it. This was already explained via our chat support.

As per our Terms of Service, customers are responsible for locking the bike correctly upon return to ensure it isn’t lost or stolen. We always aim to be clear about this responsibility at checkout. We truly appreciate your patience and understanding, and we hope this clarifies why the charge was applied.

I 'sold' my second hand bike to this company. With promise of receiving payment within 14days. I never received payment.
Total scam.

Dont trust them …

I bought a bike from them with a 30 days warranty. Returned it within 1 week. I told them next day that battery is faulty . They advised that try it for few more days. When bike was returned they tried to sell another one which I refused. Held onto my money for almost 8 weeks . Before refunding deducted £70 without giving any reason and now not replying any mails , what app messages or live chat.
Dont buy bikes of them as not trustworthy.

Any time beyond that is considered a daily rental, which is why the additional charge applied. This was also explained via our chat support at the time. This company is a scam.

This company is a scam.
I hired a bike through the company and it was in an unrideable condition. The bike was rusted incredibly badly, the tires were flat and the seat was as low as it could go and couldn't be adjusted. As allowed by the policy on their website, I cancelled my bike booking and asked for a refund via email.
The email bounced back, their "customer service" inbox seems to be a do-not-reply one. The phone number on their website tells you to call a different number, which immediately hangs up on you. If you contact via WhatsApp or Instagram, they also don't reply. Their "customer service" is a Chat bot that takes about 20 minutes to respond and nothing will ever happen with what it says.
You should just not use this company. Everything is fine if there's no problems with the bike, but there will be problems because all of the bikes they rent are in shocking condition. It is literally impossible to reach any kind of customer service. Such a disappointing experience.
