Poor quality shutters and disappointing customer experience

Original post: I purchased Perfect Fit shutter blinds from Newblinds.co.uk for just over £300, and unfortunately the experience has been extremely disappointing.

Fitting the blinds was difficult from the beginning because my window has a handle at the bottom. At point of purchase, I was asked for the window handle position and was charged extra for having window handles at the bottom, which led me to believe the blinds would be suitable and would come with a rebate (that additional £14.12 charge was only refunded after I complained upon receiving the blinds and finding there was no rebate).

Once installing the blinds after having to navigate the issues with the window handle, the quality issues were clear. The brackets didn’t seem strong enough to support the weight of the shutters. The blinds fell off the window frame multiple times and several slats broke into pieces. I have documented photos of this.

For context, I have Perfect Fit shutters from another company (Order Blinds) fitted on a different window in my home and those have been completely secure with no issues at all. For the window in question, I eventually removed the Newblinds.co.uk product altogether as they just kept falling off the window frame and replaced it blinds from a different supplier (Blinds2Go) — which fit perfectly and have caused no problems. This really highlighted the contrast in quality.

Due to the issues I experienced with the blinds from Newblinds.co.uk, I subsequently raised a dispute with American Express, but Newblinds.co.uk contested it and the bank ruled in their favour. I then took the matter to the Financial Ombudsman. Despite the photos I provided, they concluded there was insufficient evidence to prove the blinds were faulty without examination. I did not accept their final decision, as it does not reflect what actually happened. I believe I received a low quality product and I’m sharing my experience so others can make an informed decision. Based on the quality of the product I received and the overall customer experience, I would not purchase from Newblinds.co.uk again.

Update:
Thank you to Newblinds.co.uk for taking the time to respond. I’m adding this update so readers have the full picture from my experience as a genuine customer.

1. “All Perfect Fit Shutters are identical” – this has not matched my experience

I appreciate the explanation about the Louvolite system, but in practice the quality of my shutters from Newblinds.co.uk was noticeably poorer than the shutters I’ve bought from other suppliers, including Order Blinds.
The components may be from the same manufacturer, but other factors involved in the process clearly make a difference. My review reflects the product I personally received.

2. Window handle configuration

I followed the measuring instructions on the website, including selecting the bottom handle position exactly as shown.
Other suppliers I’ve used did not require the same additional charges, and the shutters from them fitted without the issues I experienced here.
Newblinds refunded the £14.12 additional charge as I previously stated, which I appreciate, but the this didn’t resolve the problems with stability which resulted in me spending even more money on replacements with another company.

3. Lack of evidence / photos

It’s true that they requested photos and videos. I provided the information I could at the time, but the shutters were not staying in place and repeatedly fell, which made it difficult to capture everything they asked for while trying to keep the panels from dropping.
Regardless, the shutters were not usable as delivered, which is ultimately what matters to me as a customer.

4. Independent review

As I mentioned in my initial post, American Express and the Financial Ombudsman Service assessed the dispute based on the information available to them, but I would like to highlight this is not the same as a technical inspection of the shutters in person. Their findings don’t change the fact that the product I received was faulty in use and below the standard I’ve had from other Louvolite suppliers.

My conclusion:

I’m glad Newblinds.co.uk have shared their perspective.
My review simply reflects my actual experience: the shutters supplied to me did not stay in place, and were not comparable in quality to identical-style shutters I’ve purchased from other companies. I stand by my feedback so future customers can make an informed decision. And based on my personal experience (I’ve essentially wasted £300), I would strongly advise potential customers to consider other suppliers instead.

I was personally involved in your correspondence, and I’d like to offer some clarification for readers based on the information we have on record. 



1. Product Quality – All Perfect Fit Shutters Use the Same Louvolite System

The “Perfect Fit Shutter Blinds” you purchased are made using the official Louvolite Perfect Fit Shutter system.

For customers reading this, it’s important to note:
• All retailers supplying this system—Newblinds.co.uk or otherwise—use identical Louvolite components (frames, slats, brackets, hardware).
• All fabricators use the same Louvolite software to process measurements, which determines every cut and assembly detail.
• In our production process, the key structural element, the stiles, are assembled by Louvolite themselves.

Because of this, there is no meaningful variation in product quality between retailers. If two companies supply Louvolite Perfect Fit Shutters to the same sizes and configuration, the shutters will be effectively identical.



2. Window Handle Position & Configuration

At the point of order, you provided:
• Width: 100.5 cm
• Drop: 97 cm
• Glass Size measurement
• Bead Depth: 23–24 mm (24 mm bracket)
• 2 shutter panels
• Handle at bottom (51 cm)
• Tilt control right side

Customers are not asked whether they want a rebate (cut-out). The window handle position determines the correct configuration.

With two shutter panels and a bottom-positioned handle, the correct solution is handle packers, not a rebate. A rebate cannot be cut at the central join between two panels.

Handle packers sit behind the handle to give it enough projection to clear the shutter frame. This is explained:
• In the help text next to “window handle position”, and
• In the FAQ section

Our team highlighted these resources during your query.
The packer kit carries a cost (hence the charge), but we refunded this as a gesture of goodwill as soon as you questioned it.

If this same order had been placed with any other Louvolite supplier, the product would have been supplied in the exact same configuration.



3. No Evidence Was Provided to Show a Product Fault

Although you reported issues with fitment and panels falling, we were never provided with the photos and further information needed to diagnose the issue.

Across several emails, we requested:
• Photos of the handle and projection
• Photos of bracket positions
• A side-on image showing bead depth and how the shutter frame engaged
• A video showing the frame disengaging

Without this, we could not determine whether the issue related to:
• Handle projection (packer requirement)
• Bead depth and bracket size
• Installation positioning
• Or any other installation-related factor

We are always happy to replace faulty parts or provide installation guidance, but cooperation is essential.



4. Independent Reviews Found No Evidence of a Product Defect

Your case was reviewed independently by American Express and the Financial Ombudsman Service.
Both concluded that there was not sufficient evidence of a manufacturing fault.

While you may disagree with their findings, it is an important part of the overall context.



Final Note

We take customer experience extremely seriously. The Louvolite Perfect Fit Shutter system is widely used across the industry, and when matched correctly to the window, it performs reliably.

If something is not right with a product, we will always work with the customer to diagnose and resolve it — but we do require the necessary information to do so.

Fantastic light-blocking blinds

Organised blinds from Newblinds.co.uk to be installed for my friend, who developed extreme sensitivity to light. It was during the summer and we needed a quick turnaround, because of the light nights. The delivery was very speedy and they were very easy to install. The blinds did a fantastic job as they are fitted to the actual window frames. 100% recommend.

Still no order after a month…

It's been a month and I still haven't received my order. Courier just said they'll send it out when they can. Can't speak to anyone at New blinds, it's all by email so no joy there as well. Probably fine if your order goes right but no customer support if it goes wrong.

Edit: Thanks for your reply. You should have all my details from the email I sent you, but you can disregard it anyway. I've just been down to the depot to pick the order up myself.

2nd Edit: If you're now saying you haven't received my email, that just sums up my whole experience doesn't it.

Blinds were made wrong on this occasion

Have ordered many times before and always the blinds were excellent. This time, the cords on the roller blind were made wrong and this means that the blinds won't open all the way. Really disappointing because the blind colour and material are really nice. I contacted customer service who have been responsive -- they are going to send me new mechanisms to put into the blinds that will allow them to unroll all the way. But shouldn't NewBlinds have taken more responsibility for making the blinds poorly rather than forcing me to remake them at home? I haven't received the replacement parts yet and have no information on when to expect them, so not sure whether this will solve the problem.

Thank you for your review and I'm sorry to hear about the issue that you've experienced.

It sounds from your description that the child safety breaker on the chain is positioned too close to the chain operating mechanism, which is preventing it from operating fully.

The quickest / simplest thing to do in these instances is to send a new chain mechanism. You can simply pull the old one out of the end of the roller tube and the new one slots in, in its place.

I'm really sorry that this mistake has inconvenienced you.

I wouldn't like to say that we are 'forcing you' to accept this as a solution, nor are you having to 'remake' the blind. We have only proposed a really simple fix to an unfortunate and simple mistake that was made by our production team

If you do not feel comfortable with carrying out this process, then of course we'd be more than happy to resolve the problem by collecting the blinds for amendment or remaking them,

I will contact you directly and you can let me know if this is your preference.

Overall good service

Very pleased with blind in general - splendid colour and exactly the right size. And my husband had no trouble fixing it to the wall.
However, as it is attached above the window aperture, the open top meant tufts of thread stuck up (now concealed by neat piece of batten), also slightly bugged by the wand not hanging totally vertical.

Truth ..

Truth ... Shutters are really good, brackets to fit, difficult to judge, guidance on measurement not good. The largest 30mm not right, order of replacement was total rip off concerning price and postage. The smallest 22mm still not right ended up sticking a nail in to hold them. They look good on the outside.

I can see from our correspondence that you originally ordered 30mm brackets, which proved too large, and then reordered 22mm brackets, believing these to be correct. Unfortunately, it sounds like these have also not fitted properly. As there’s quite a big difference between those two sizes, it sounds like the bead depth may have been mismeasured initially.

We offer several bracket sizes (18mm, 20mm, 22mm, 24mm, 26mm, 28mm, and 30mm), so we’re confident we can find the perfect fit. Our team is always happy to advise, and our measuring video here may help:

Rather than trying to secure the shutters with a nail, I'd recommend contacting our team for support. We’ll be happy to help resolve this and ensure your shutters are fitted securely and safely.

Regarding the cost of replacement brackets and postage, these prices cover the product, packaging, the labour to pick and pack, and the Royal Mail delivery service. However, if you have any unused brackets still in good condition, we’ll gladly accept them back for a refund.

Mixed experiences

Looks good. Ok to fit. Delivered to a different location and left outside. I live alone and had to leave them outside another house until a friend was able to help me transfer them. It was raining and took three journeys. Also over a week late being dispatched from the factory but Gemma was helpful.

The blinds are very well made and perfect fit.
The only reason why 4* was that the delivery driver delivered to the wrong house and therefore it took a few days to trace our blinds!
