I am a woman of colour. I’ve shopped here for years, having lived in Kingston for over 20 years and worked in Kingston as a lecturer at the university and the sixth from college. My experience of shopping there in the past was sort of okay, there used to be a really nice friendly English white guy who worked on the tills and an older Chinese man who always said hello… anyway since Covid ended I returned to shopping there and noticed a change. I am followed around the store. Always. It is so insulting. So ignorant in 2023 to be targeted as a person of colour and followed… No other store in Kingston does this awful insulting stuff. But I walk into Longdan and am met with this awful ignorant racist attitude… So I stopped shopping there, but stupidly went into the shop yesterday for some specific items that are difficult to find elsewhere with my (white) partner. We had been shopping so had several bags so I asked him to stay with the bags by the door whilst I went to buy the dumplings. This was because I KNEW that if I carried open bags it would be a red flag to this store. I was wearing a long skirt, short sleeved cotton blouse and carrying a small handbag… All other bags I left with my partner. Very quickly I realised that I was being ‘followed’. There was no-one else near and the shop person did not even pretend to be doing anything else. He just stood near and vaguely looked at refrigerated cabinets. Not opening them, just standing near… I watched for several minutes then asked him why??? Why??? It is so insulting and rude. Why does this shop think it is acceptable to 'racially profile' people of colour? Anyway I paid and left… obviously will never return. Racism, ignorance. In 2023.

Good quality groceries, promptly delivered. The frozen prawns were still just about frozen. The Longdan premium Vietnamese jasmine rice was particularly good - there was a waft of fragrance as I cut open the bag. Definitely one to rival the Thai varieties.
