Firstly, this is an accredited qualification, and candidates are assessed against strict criteria set by the awarding body. A pass is not based on general fluency or being a native speaker — it requires consistent demonstration of professional interpreting standards, including accuracy, completeness, correct terminology, and appropriate handling of sensitive scenarios.

In your case, the outcome was not based on minor issues. There were several significant concerns identified during assessment, including critical terminology errors (for example, interpreting “lungs” as “liver”), omission of key clinical concepts such as “joint damage”, leaving specialist terms untranslated, and a note-taking approach that affected accuracy and delivery. In a real-world healthcare setting, these types of errors could lead to serious misunderstandings between patient and clinician — for example, incorrect diagnosis, inappropriate treatment decisions, or failure to communicate key risks. In extreme cases, poor interpreting has led to the death of patients. This is precisely why standards in interpreting assessments are applied rigorously.

We find that learners who approach the qualification with the understanding that it is a professional skill — and who invest sufficient time in preparation, particularly around terminology and exam technique — are far more likely to succeed. Our current outcomes reflect this: 84% of learners pass on their first attempt, rising to 96% after a second attempt.

It is also important to recognise that not every candidate passing is a sign of quality, not a flaw. Accredited qualifications must maintain robust standards to remain credible and respected by employers and public services. Awarding a pass where competence has not been demonstrated would undermine the qualification and, more importantly, could place vulnerable individuals at risk.

For this reason, assessment decisions cannot be influenced by external pressure, dissatisfaction, or the expectation of a different outcome. They must be based solely on whether the required standard has been met.

Regarding transparency, full assessment criteria and preparation materials are provided in advance via LearnHub. These clearly outline what is required to pass. As with all professional qualifications, success depends on how thoroughly these materials are engaged with and applied in preparation.

In terms of resit fees, these reflect the real cost of delivering an accredited exam, including assessors, internal quality assurance and administration. These are standard across the sector and are not contingent on outcome.

Finally, in relation to reviews, many of our learners do go on to pass and progress into interpreting roles, which is reflected in the feedback shared. However, maintaining the integrity of the qualification means ensuring that only those who meet the required standard are awarded certification.

We appreciate that this may not be the outcome you were hoping for. However, our responsibility is to uphold professional standards and ensure that those who qualify are able to practise safely, accurately and ethically.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I appreciate that failing an assessment can feel deeply personal and upsetting, particularly when you already work professionally and identify strongly with your role as an interpreter. However, it’s important to be clear about what the Learn Q exam is designed to measure. Experience alone does not guarantee competence against a regulated assessment standard, and many learners with little or no prior professional experience pass our exams because they demonstrate the required skills on the day. Conversely, some experienced practitioners do not, and that does not make the assessment invalid or disrespectful.

Our exams are not a judgement of you as a person, nor are they designed to undermine your professional identity. They are structured, criteria-based assessments aligned to recognised standards. If a candidate cannot meet those standards in a controlled assessment environment, it raises a legitimate and unavoidable question: if a relatively straightforward competence-based exam cannot be passed, is it safe or appropriate for that individual to be interpreting in high-stakes, face-to-face settings? Interpreters work with vulnerable people, critical information, and serious consequences. From a moral and professional standpoint, the priority must always be the safety and accuracy of communication for those who rely on interpreting services.

It’s also worth reflecting honestly on the feedback itself. Labels such as “incompetent” or “useless” are not personal attacks; they are shorthand descriptors tied to specific performance criteria. Rejecting that feedback outright, or attributing the outcome solely to disrespect or unfairness, risks missing an opportunity for development. In some cases, arrogance or overconfidence rooted in experience can actually block progress, particularly if it leads someone to believe assessment standards should bend to their background rather than the other way round.

If you wish to continue, the constructive next step is to review the feedback carefully, identify the gaps, and address them before reassessment. That process exists to protect you, the profession, and—most importantly—the people you interpret for.
