This isn’t a holiday to contemplate if you’re unfit, or want relaxation, but it is an adventure. Every day starts with a 500m steep hill to the station, and despite spending a great deal of time on trains, you can expect to walk a lot as well. The hotel is comfortable, not luxurious, and the meals mostly well cooked and tasty. You get to visit places like glamorous St Moritz and stunningly beautiful Arosa, but you can’t spend a great deal of time in any of them. The scenery is magnificent and the engineering magic that created the various lines, tunnels and awesome viaducts is fascinating. For me, the highlight was the Bernina Express to Torino in Italy, though it was a pity we arrived there during siesta and had only a couple of hours to explore. Do be aware that you have to move your own suitcase around too, on the outward and homeward legs of the journey, including getting it on and off trains and in between stations.
Our holiday manager, Anne-Marie, deserves a special mention, as she was a last minute substitute dropped in with 24 hours’ notice, and was superb.
