TL;DR:
We used First Choice Extensions for a rear extension and extensive internal work, while they simultaneously managed the neighbouring semi-detached house as a joint project. Despite the added complexity, the project was generally well managed and we found them professional, transparent and never pushy. Their exceptionally detailed quote was particularly helpful in understanding the costs. There were inevitably some unexpected problems and a few issues with individual subcontractors, but the company dealt with these and, importantly, continued to come back and resolve snags after the main work was finished. They aren't the cheapest, but we valued the feeling that we were in safe hands and wouldn't be left to deal with problems on our own. Now that we're back in the house and all the stress is forgotten, we're very happy with the result and would genuinely recommend them.

Full review: We used First Choice Extensions for a substantial project on our semi-detached house, including a small rear extension adjoining our existing extension, as well as internal work to the bathrooms and kitchen, wall plastering, underfloor heating, flooring, loft boarding and decorating.

Our project was carried out at the same time as our next-door neighbour's, with both projects managed by First Choice. This obviously added complexity, with two adjoining houses being worked on simultaneously, but overall we felt the coordination was handled well.

We chose First Choice because they were professional without being pushy and took the time to explain the process and costs. Their quote was by far the most detailed of the companies we considered — a 50-page spreadsheet which looked slightly terrifying initially, but proved extremely useful in making the costs and scope transparent. They were also helpful when we decided to scale down some of our plans and never pushed us to do more work.

Communication and project management were generally very good, although we would occasionally have appreciated more information in advance about the following week's work. We had some unexpected problems with the foundations, which we had been warned were a possibility. When this happened, First Choice brought in a specialist subcontractor and dealt with it promptly. Having a larger company with a good network of contacts was reassuring when problems arose.

We had many different tradespeople working in the house over the course of the project. All were polite, respectful and pleasant to have around. It is fair to say that some newer subcontractors did work below the standard we and First Choice expected, and the company subsequently stopped using some of them. This is a reality worth bearing in mind with any building company using subcontractors: if you get an individual who isn't up to standard, the customer experiences the consequences.

Where First Choice really impressed us was the aftercare. They came back repeatedly to deal with snags rather than simply finishing the job and disappearing. Some issues may have resulted from the final week being a little rushed, but they continued to address them. There were no massive delays overall, although we think it is important to be realistic that unexpected problems and some delays are part of a project of this scale.

Now that we are back in the house, we are overall very happy with the result. There are inevitably some imperfections — plaster cracks and some walls and lines that could have been straighter — but these are minor compared with the overall outcome.

Would we recommend First Choice? Yes, genuinely. They are not the cheapest, but for us the value was in the reassurance that we were in safe hands and wouldn't be left in the lurch when something went wrong. After spending years thinking about whether to take on a project like this, that sense of security was extremely important.

Our advice to anyone undertaking a project like this, regardless of the company they choose, would be to think through every detail of every room being affected and get as much as possible into the contract upfront. We did this to a large degree but could have done even more. First Choice's detailed quotation was particularly helpful in giving us a realistic understanding of the costs.

Overall, no building project of this scale is going to be completely stress-free or perfect, but we felt First Choice genuinely cared about getting the job done and, importantly, would stick with us when things didn't go exactly to plan. We are happy with the result and would use them again.

First Choice have been excellent throughout our building project. The project managers are clear and thorough, and the tradesmen on site are in the main open, honest, polite and courteous. They acknowledged the difficulties we faced living the property with small children whilst the work was undertaken and tried their hardest to make the process an easy one for us. We obviously hit problems, delays, and errors along the way (I imagine this is inevitable with building work) however these were listened to and addressed thoroughly and promptly by First Choice. They take on board feedback from ourselves and other clients and their processes were clearly being updated and improved in light of this as the project went on. They were the priciest of the quotes we got for the work, however I have no regrets and believe the money was well spent on the professionalism and assurance we got in return. I can’t recommend them highly enough.

I cannot speak highly enough about Tony, AJ, and the team. The work was carried out exactly as promised, the site was well managed, and we were kept up to date with the upcoming schedule and details throughout. One or two minor issues were dealt with promptly and effectively. Every trade we dealt with were polite and efficient. My only disappointment is we don't have more work for First Choice!

We recently completed a fantastic development that has really transformed our home. The project included an infill ground floor extension and to then open to the rear of the house to create a spacious, open-plan kitchen diner, as well as a loft dorma conversion that added a new bedroom with an en suite.

Professional service from start to end. They did not raise a single unforeseen to the extent that they manger to absorb it all from digging to building to fine finish. The architect, the PM and the builders team were all working at top level. I would recommend John and John all day long. The PM and the Architect are trust worthy and the compose solid experience. They all dealt with the building regs site visits and brought the project to a successful conclusion

We selected First Choice based on an initial meeting with Tony who listened to our requirements for the build and budget. He returned with the designer who drew up the plans which we agreed on, with a few minor revisions. Tony then met with us to discuss the budget and timeline with AJ the Project Manager.

All aspects of the build were covered within the budget. Design, permissions, building inspections and structural drawings.

The build was started on the date specified and completed by the end date on the contract which did come in on budget. The contract was very exact and transparent with dates and schedule of payments, all of which were attained on time.

AJ the Project Manager was fantastic and was always available to answer and resolve any queries. All works were carried out by teams of skilled, polite and diligent tradesmen.

We would absolutely recommend First Choice ~ the whole process was made stress free. Thank you all !

We used First Choice for several parts of an initial renovation, and I must say the work was brilliant. We had quite a big project, which included a new roof, gutters, new windows and doors, new plumbing, and the removal of a load-bearing wall to open up the kitchen. There were also a few other tasks, such as bricking up a window and removing a chimney stack.
Tony, who comes round to do the initial quote, is great—no sales patter, listens to what you need and comes back with a quote. His pricing was spot on, based on the research we had done, so no issues there. Some of the other quotes we received were just daft—people chancing their arm. Also, Tony comes across as the kind of person you’d prefer to give your business to—he clearly knows his stuff, and I instantly felt confident that the job would be done well.

The work was completed to an excellent standard, and AJ, the project manager, was there throughout to help. AJ was always available for questions during the project—another top guy.

The team they’ve assembled is excellent—polite lads who just get on with the job. Keep them supplied with brews, and they’ll crack on! It was actually a bit sad when they finished, as they were great to have around the house. The roofers were fantastic, and one of our neighbours even commented on how professional they were—there was minimal disturbance.

At the end of the project, we decided to get Shane in to do the plumbing, based on how good the rest of the team had been (the price quoted was fair). The work was once again completed to a high standard and done efficiently.

I would 100% call Tony and First Choice again for any major work, and I’d recommend them to anyone. Five-star service at fair and competitive prices—what more can you ask for.
