I purchased one box of 20 blue 500 × 500 mm carpet tiles. This sounds like an entirely unremarkable transaction. It was not.

The garage already possessed what can only reasonably be described as heritage-listed grey carpet, circa 2009. This material has survived children, cars, bicycles, furniture, spilled substances of known and unknown provenance, several sporting eras, the rise of the Tungsten Cathedral and approximately 100 stories per tile.

You don't simply dispose of carpet with that sort of heritage. You relocate the collection. It had become apparent that the darts area needed expansion, while at the same time several of the older hallowed grey tiles could be redeployed beneath the electric Volvo which more thabn occasionally graces itself alongside the oche. This seemed like sensible domestic asset management.

Enter the blue tiles. At 500 × 500 mm, they possess one particularly dangerous characteristic:

they encourage mathematics.

Four tiles is a square metre. Six tiles make three metres long. Three tiles make 1.5 metres wide. And suddenly eighteen of the twenty tiles arranged themselves into a magnificent 3.0 m × 1.5 m blue rectangle. Two remained for strategic infill and maintenance of the broader carpet estate. At this point I realised I had not laid carpet. I had unwittingly constructed a runway.

The blue strip established itself perfectly beneath the Target Tor and Omni - known locally as "the Tungsten Lighthouse", with sufficient width to give the thrower room, sufficient length to encompass the 2.37 m regulation throwing distance, and sufficient visual authority to suggest that all movements within the garage should henceforth require clearance from Ground Control.

Thus, Pally Alley Runway 13L was born.

There had been no architectural drawings. No aviation consultant was engaged. No environmental impact statement was prepared. Nobody contacted Airservices Australia. I simply kept placing 500 mm blue squares beside other 500 mm blue squares until the garage developed controlled airspace.

The effect is superb. The blue is strong without being ridiculous, provides a beautifully defined approach to the board, and sits wonderfully against the venerable grey carpet surrounding it. The old carpet provides history. The new carpet provides geometry.

It is essentially math-art collision expressed through commercial flooring.

There have also been substantial benefits to domestic life. As part of the works, sections of the heritage grey collection were transferred beneath the electric Volvo. My wife can now arrive home, park her electric vehicle in the garage and step directly from the Volvo onto carpet.

Carpet.

In a garage.

This, surely, is the pinnacle of sophistication.

I don't wish to overstate my contribution to the institution of marriage, but there comes a point where a man must reluctantly accept that he has transitioned from ordinary spouse to trophy husband.

Naturally, she may believe that I extended the carpeting for her benefit. There is absolutely no need to trouble her with the minor technical detail that this outcome arose because I required additional floor geometry for throwing tungsten at a circular object. This is eDart engineering solutions masquerading as domestic harmony.
