Install DriveScore on your phone, the app will then use the functionality of your smartphone such as the accelerometer, gyroscope, compass and GPS readings to determine when you are undertaking a ‘Trip’ in a vehicle.

DriveScore will use these tools to take and record measurements relating to your driving behaviour, including calculating speed, acceleration, braking, cornering and distance travelled.

Demonstrating lower-risk driving behaviour such as smooth cornering and acceleration will lead to a higher DriveScore, while actions such as sudden braking or excessive speeding will lead to a lower DriveScore.

These are some of the factors that insurers may consider when providing a quote for car insurance premiums. DriveScore offers you the opportunity to understand how your driving behaviour may impact the cost of your car insurance premium.

Improved but still flawed

I love the idea of this app but it has its flaws. I have previously logged inaccuracies using the data provided and today there was yet another, It recorded an event of hard acceleration but the figures provided were an increase in speed from 3 to 7 mph in 1.2 seconds ie 3.3 mph per second or 1.5 m/sec squared or 0.15 g. Apparently Drivescore's threshold for 'harsh acceleration is 0.33 g. AI tells me my 0.15 g is what might be recorded when creeping out of a junction or manoeuvring in a car park and hard acceleration would need to be 8-9 mph per second. This was merely pulling gently away from a set of temporary traffic lights at road works. The phone was firmly located. My 365 day score is 997 and I have gone several weeks with 1000 14 day score. If i have to brake or accelerate hard in an emergency I accept that while I have done nothing wrong, an event will be recorded, and I would not complain - that's life. What is so frustrating is 'events' which by the apps own data is clearly incorrect but I know from experience that I shall now lose several points on my 14 day score. It would not be so bad if DriveScore had a mechanism for recognising when it has made an error and would restore the status quo ante. My second concern is that when confronted with a situation my first thought is how this will impact my drivescore. I hope I will continue to take the correct action to avoid an accident despite the fear of registering an 'event'.

Requires you to have location service…

Requires you to have location service set to always ( understandable) but this results in high battery drain.
I tried set it to ‘whilst in use’ but it won’t allow that. And stops you using the app.
Also kept showing random notification (red) dots that I couldn’t clear.
The actual monitoring isn’t too bad, and good to use to see how you score.

Driving events flagged incorrectly – does not reflect real driving

I’ve been reviewing DriveScore data over approximately 187 miles of driving, and there are clear inaccuracies between what actually happened on the road and what the app reports.

Several examples include:

* “Harsh cornering” being recorded on what is effectively a straight or very slight bend in the road
* “Acceleration” events triggered when joining a 60mph road, where it is necessary to build speed safely to match traffic
* “Acceleration” also flagged when navigating a tight 90-degree uphill bend with parked cars on both sides, where controlled acceleration is required to safely manoeuvre
* “Harsh braking” recorded at traffic lights that change quickly, requiring normal, safe braking
* Multiple events clustered in areas with poor road surfaces and potholes

These are not examples of unsafe driving — they are normal responses to road layout, traffic flow, and conditions.

The routes themselves have also shown inconsistencies at times, which raises further concerns about GPS accuracy and how events are being interpreted.

Over a relatively small sample of 187 miles, these types of errors appear repeatedly, suggesting the system is not reliably distinguishing between safe, appropriate driving and genuinely risky behaviour.

A further concern is behavioural. When using the app, there is a tendency to start driving to achieve a better score rather than simply driving safely and appropriately for the conditions. This can lead to hesitation or second-guessing in situations where decisive, confident driving is actually required.

The concern is that the scoring does not always reflect real driving decisions, particularly in rural or mixed road conditions where drivers must adapt quickly.

While the concept of monitoring driving is understandable, the current level of accuracy does not appear sufficient to fairly assess real-world driving behaviour.

Hi there,

Thank you for sharing your detailed observations about the DriveScore app.

I understand your concerns regarding the accuracy of event detection and how it may not always reflect real driving conditions, especially in complex scenarios like you have mentioned.

Could you please email us at feedback@drivescore.com with any specific trip data or timestamps where you noticed these discrepancies?

Thanks,

Hazel

Inconsistent scoring and lack of transparency

I have been using DriveScore for nearly a month and have completed around 750 tracked miles. Unfortunately, my experience has been disappointing due to inconsistencies in how the app evaluates driving behaviour.

On multiple occasions, I have been flagged for “harsh acceleration” despite the data suggesting otherwise. For example:

Increasing speed from 3–13 mph in 4.0 seconds (~1.1 m/s² or 0.11 G)
5–12 mph in 2.1 seconds (~1.5 m/s² or 0.15 G)
6–15 mph in 2.1 seconds (~1.9 m/s² or 0.19 G)

These values are well within normal and safe driving limits, yet they were still penalised. In one instance, acceleration was flagged without any supporting data at all.

The app also fails to account for real-world conditions such as road gradient. On a downhill stretch near a roundabout on my daily commute, the car can naturally reach 15 mph within a couple of seconds even with minimal throttle input. This is repeatedly flagged as aggressive driving, which is clearly unrealistic.

When I raised this concern, the response I received was generic and did not address the core issue. While the app claims to monitor “patterns” using accelerometer, GPS, and gyroscope data, it provides no transparency on:

What thresholds define “harsh” acceleration, braking, or cornering
Where exactly cornering faults occur (these are not even shown)
How environmental factors are considered (if at all)

What makes this more frustrating is that speed is the only parameter drivers can easily monitor and control. Acceleration, braking, and cornering scores are effectively opaque, leaving users penalised without actionable feedback.

Despite no clear faults being shown, my score currently sits around 660/1000 for cornering. This raises concerns about how fair and accurate the scoring system really is.

Overall, the concept is good, but the execution lacks transparency and realism. Until the scoring system becomes clearer and better aligned with real-world driving conditions, it’s difficult to trust the results.

Hi Jaison,

Thanks for taking the time to review your experience with DriveScore. I’ll run through the points you raised and explain what’s happening behind the scenes.

Acceleration events:
Acceleration and braking events are triggered by the peak G‑force recorded during a short acceleration window, not the average.

So even if the app shows an average like 0.15G, there may have been a brief spike, for example 0.4G, during that same moment. That highest value is what triggers the event.

When you look at the speed change and time on the event screen, it can feel like steady acceleration is assumed. But the trigger always comes from the single highest reading in that period.

Real‑world context:
The score looks for patterns in acceleration, braking and cornering, but it can’t always understand the full context of the road.

Things like hills and road layouts are especially difficult to interpret. In situations like the ones you described, this can sometimes lead to lower scores even when you’re driving safely.

This is a limitation of any telematics system. The app can measure how the car moves, but not what’s happening around it.

Low‑level cornering is tracked in the background and may cause a small score change. Harsher cornering above a set threshold triggers a visible event on your trip.

Your score:
Your DriveScore is based on the last 365 days of driving. While your account is still new, each trip has a bigger influence on the score.

As you complete more trips, small inconsistencies usually balance out and your score becomes more stable.

When insurers view your score, they only see the 365‑day total. Real‑world driving isn’t perfect, so a score of 1,000 isn’t expected all the time. Even if one area, like cornering, is lower, insurers only look at your overall score.

We’re always working on improvements, and feedback like yours helps shape future updates. Some changes take time, but we really appreciate you sharing your experience.

Many thanks,

Finn

All good

All good, easy to use. One thing, please add number of events on main screen for trips, meaning when you looking for the trips list, the number of events shovn on main screen, so you dont need to press on details of each trip to see events. Thanks
