My niece sadly lost her puppy, due to negligence from the Kennels. Upon further investigation of the alleged 5 ⭐️ rated kennels, this business dropped it star rating by 4 ⭐️ for both breeding and sale of puppies by the local council (Pendle Borough Council) for the full year of 2024… this surely speaks volumes, and shows the rapid decline of star rating issued from a governing body!! Please see attached the star rated Animal Welfare certificates issued by Pendle Borough Council.

Thank you for your comment Michelle. We are aware that a number of 1-star reviews have been posted today following a single situation involving a family member. While we completely understand that emotions can run high after the loss of a puppy, many of the reviews being posted are from individuals who have never visited Douglas Hall Kennels, never purchased a puppy from us, and have had no direct experience with our business.

We feel it’s important to clarify the facts for anyone reading:

✅ We are fully licensed and regulated by Pendle Borough Council and operate in full compliance with all DEFRA Animal Welfare Regulations.
✅ Our star rating is set by local licensing officers, not by customers or online reviews.
✅ A change in star rating does not indicate a welfare issue — it can occur for administrative council policy changes, or that we do not Kennel Club register our puppies (due to our litters being bred to be pets only and not for breeding or show purposes etc).
✅ Our animals are cared for under strict welfare standards, with full veterinary oversight, appropriate socialisation, and transparent processes that all visitors can see for themselves.

Regarding the situation referred to:
The puppy in question did not become unwell while in our care. The issue developed later, after leaving us, and was unfortunately not treated in the necessary timeframe. Despite this, we still offered a refund, which the purchaser accepted. We again extend our sympathies for their loss — losing a puppy is heartbreaking for anyone.

We welcome anyone to visit our premises, meet our staff, meet our puppies, see our facilities, and view our licensing documents. Transparency is, and has always been, central to how we operate.

We will continue focusing on the care and welfare of our puppies and the support we provide to the many families who choose us.
Thank you to our genuine customers who continue to visit, recommend, and support us.

Thank you for you lengthy yet repetitive response. I note that you have copied and pasted a lot of your response to me from other review responses. Unless you have this as a scripted response that send out to all your negative reviews.

Whilst I understand your response I am at a loss as to your comment around my opinion having never visiting your premises. Surely that’s what the whole review system is set up for to give your future customers an insight into how previous customers rate their experiences in using your services? I don’t need to visit as I have a family member who has had 1st hand experience with yourselves and her account in dealing with your business in the purchase of a puppy from your establishment. The sad fact in all of this is that the puppy in question has lost its life due to inadequate details and due diligence with documentation whilst also not being adequately vaccinated at the correct time and to add further inadequacies had contracted conjunctivitis upon sale.

Again I re-iterate your comment on the stars and I was talking about your license rating from a governing body and not a review site. Surely your comment about the registration of your animals with the Kennel Club is an excuse as you would never have been awarded a 5 ⭐️ rating in the first place without that and as for a change in councillors surely there are protocols that need to be met rather than an individual’s own decision in issuing rated licensing documents, unless something untoward was occurring in previous years issuing of licence to explain the high ratings!!!

As for your transparency at no point was a full refund offered or assistance with the excruciating amount you vet bills the poor little mite had to endure. I think your scripted response is an insult to my intelligence and then to add more insult to injury you thank your genuine customers for their continued support. If my niece is not a genuine customer and you want to disregard and ignore her 1st hand account in dealing with your establishment you clearly should not be in business.

Thank you Michelle for taking the time to share your thoughts. We do appreciate your concern for your family member, but there are several points that need to be clarified for accuracy and fairness.

1. Regarding your comment about “scripted responses.”
We are responding to a large number of reviews posted within a very short timeframe by individuals who were not involved in the purchase. Where the same incorrect claims are repeated, our responses naturally need to address the same points. This is not a script — it is simply correcting the same misinformation across multiple posts.

2. On reviewing a business you have not personally used.
Review platforms generally expect reviews to be based on first-hand experiences.
Your family member’s experience — which we responded to directly — is valid for her own review.
However, second-hand accounts, especially when serious allegations are being made, can be misleading to readers who believe they are reading genuine first-hand customer experiences.

3. The claim that the puppy died due to our “lack of care.”
This is not supported by the veterinary findings. The puppy was:
• healthy and vet-checked at the point of sale
• vaccinated by a licensed veterinary surgeon
• showing no clinical concerns when collected
• handled in accordance with DEFRA and council regulations

The condition that developed occurred after the puppy had left our care. We understand how upsetting that is, but attributing this to our kennels does not reflect the facts recorded by both veterinary professionals and the local authority.

4. Conjunctivitis on collection
No such issue was raised at the time of collection or during the 48-hour post-purchase period, which is when any health concerns should be reported so that we can support and advise.
Had we been made aware, we would have assisted immediately — as we do with all customers.

5. On licensing and star ratings
The star rating issued by local authorities is influenced by numerous administrative factors (building works, council policy changes). A temporary reduction does not indicate poor welfare, nor wrongdoing.
This has been clarified by Pendle Borough Council directly.

6. On refunds and support
A refund was issued — and accepted — by the purchaser.
This was done as a gesture of goodwill, even though the issue was determined to have arisen after the puppy left our premises. To state that “no refund was offered” is not accurate.

7. On whether your niece was a “genuine customer”
She was, and we have never claimed otherwise.
Our reference to “genuine customers” relates to the many reviews now being posted by people who have had no direct contact with us and are repeating incorrect claims. Her own experience was responded to in full and directly.



We truly are sorry for your family’s loss — that is not in dispute. What we cannot do is accept responsibility for circumstances that were not caused by our establishment, nor allow repeatedly inaccurate statements to go unaddressed.

We remain fully open, licensed, transparent, and welcome any customer — present or future — to visit us in person, view our facilities, meet our team, and ask questions directly.

My dog came from here and died as a pup…

My dog came from here and died as a pup because of there lack of care his vaccinations was wrong and he picked up an illness while in there care we did everything we could to get him healthy again but these dogs are mixed together and are all let out to play together with no vaccines or wrong vaccines in our case witch causes them to get these problems they are also taken away from there mothers way to young and are sold without there mothers even tho Lucy’s law clearly states they mother should be present when the dog is being sold
In 2024 they had a 1 star review for the whole year so it’s crazy how they have managed to get back up to 5 stars in such little time and there is clearly something not right

We are very sorry that your friend experienced the loss of their puppy — it is a deeply upsetting situation for any family. However, several of the statements made in this review are not accurate, and it is important that readers have the correct facts.

✅ The puppy did not become ill while in our care.
He left us healthy, vet-checked, and vaccinated. The condition developed later, after leaving our premises, which was confirmed by the attending vet. No illness was present at our kennels at that time.

✅ All vaccinations were correct, issued by a licensed veterinary surgeon.


✅ Puppies are not mixed together without vaccination protection.
We follow DEFRA’s Animal Welfare Regulations, which require strict separation of puppies by age group and vaccination status. This is checked during licensing inspections, and no concerns have ever been raised.

✅ Puppies are never taken from their mothers too early.
This would be illegal, unethical, and harmful, and we have absolutely no reason or benefit to do so. All puppies stay with their mothers for the correct period under veterinary oversight.

✅ Lucy’s Law is being misinterpreted here.
Lucy’s Law applies to third-party sellers (e.g., pet shops or resellers).
We are a licensed breeding establishment, meaning Lucy’s Law does not require the mother to be present at the point of sale. This is confirmed by DEFRA and by local councils nationwide.

✅ Regarding the 1-star council rating claim:
This is misleading.
Star ratings can change for many administrative reasons such as size of operation, staffing ratios, renewal timing, council policy updates, or facility upgrades. A change in star rating does not mean poor welfare.
We are now back to a top rating because we comply fully with DEFRA regulations, and our premises and procedures meet all required standards.

✅ We acted compassionately and responsibly.
Despite the issue arising after the puppy had left our care, we still provided a full refund, which the purchaser accepted.

We understand that many recent 1-star reviews are being posted by friends and relatives who have never visited us or purchased a puppy. While understandable as a gesture of support, this does not reflect genuine experience.

We remain fully transparent and welcome anyone to visit our premises, see our facilities, meet our staff, and view our licensing documents. Welfare is — and always has been — our priority.

I wouldn't leave a single star for a review if it was an option... Zero stars! Do not buy a pup from this establishment. Within 6 months our Arthur had lost his life down to neglect in his early life from this establishment.

However, the claim that his passing was due to “neglect in his early life” is not accurate, and it is important that readers have the correct information.

He was fully vet-checked & vaccinated, and healthy at the time of collection. No issues were raised by the attending vet or by the purchaser at that time.

✅ No illness or welfare concern existed at our premises, there was no disease present in our kennels.

How good this place is

I love this place because you don’t even have to go and buy a dog to go there. Today I got a Cavapoochon and he is very well trained for puppy mats as we only got him today.

Staff are lovely and give really good advice.

We bought our healthy vibrant puppy

My daughter visited the kennels and fell in love with our little Cavapoo.
I visited the following day and we were welcomed by the owners and left to snuggle her and other puppies. She appeared the quietest of the litter and enjoyed being cuddled.
We finally decided on our Pippa and arranged to pick her up the day after her vacciations.
Pippa was ready with her documents and puppy food.
The owners explained important information and we then took Pippa home.
We were advised that if we had any questions or not sure about anything to just phone the kennels.
I received a courtesy call after a few weeks to see how Pippa was settling in and if I had anything I needed advice on.
Great service.

Very friendly and experienced

Very friendly and accommodating when we were first thinking of buying a puppy. We know 2 dogs that previously came from Douglas Hall and are just adorable so it was a no brainer to go there when we made the decision to get a puppy of our own. Staff on site are very knowledgeable and we found them always reassuring and full of useful advice.

Absolutely Amazing

The experience from start to finish was absolutely amazing the staff are so friendly and approachable and keen to answer all and any questions put to them about the breeds/pups. My family as a whole have bought 4 dogs from them and they’re all absolutely wonderful loving beautiful dogs. If you’re a first time buyer this is definitely the place for you.

Purchasing a puppy

We purchased a cockapoo in August. It is the second puppy we have purchased with them. You can spend times with the pups and take your time choosing one. They have generally already been chipped and had at least one vaccination. You get a puppy pad to take them home and a bag of food. You can phone them any time for advice. The people who run it are very friendly and helpful. I will definitely purchase from them again.

Our cockapoo baby

We purchased the most beautiful cockapoo puppy who we have named honey . I know a lot of people would say don’t buy a puppy if you don’t see the parents with them , however what you must bare in mind puppies over 8 weeks would not be with their mums any way .
The kennels are clean and puppies are all well pampered by owners and the public . You are also advised to take your puppy to a vet within 24-48 hours of purchase and if anything is wrong or picked up the puppy can be returned and a refund is given .
We did just this and our girl was perfect she’s settled in fabulous and is about to go for her first groom in the coming week . She great on and off the lead and has learnt sit paw and lie down within days she is so clever . She is very cheeky but all puppies are and loves her basket if toys . Douglas hall then contact you by phone to see how the puppy is settling in which I think is great .
Our honey is beautiful and we would purchase again in the future and recommend .
Our puppy had also picked up house training so quick considering they are kennelled . She can how ever do tiny excited wees when someone comes in but on the whole this is through excitement and has got a lot better as the weeks have gone by
On the whole great experience and we have a great puppy to love

We really appreciate you highlighting the point about seeing mums — as you said, puppies over 8 weeks old are no longer with their mothers, and we always follow the correct welfare guidelines. It’s lovely to hear that our clean kennels and the care shown by our team reassured you from the start.

We’re also so glad the 24–48 hour vet check gave you peace of mind and confirmed she was perfect. Hearing how quickly she’s picked up her training — sit, paw, lie down, great on and off lead, and almost house trained — really does show how clever she is!

Douglas hall kennels are so friendly pups are well looked after .Pens are well kept and clean .Eric is so lovely is there for support after sale when rang him thank you Eric. One pup was left on own when I took mine .When in office Eric was phoned up from office to put a little one with it Says it all brilliant kennels

We’re absolutely delighted to hear how well little Honey is doing — she sounds like an incredibly bright, cheeky and loving little Cockapoo, and it makes us so happy to know she has settled so beautifully into family life.

We really appreciate you highlighting the point about seeing mums — as you said, puppies over 8 weeks old are no longer with their mothers, and we always follow the correct welfare guidelines. It’s lovely to hear that our clean kennels and the care shown by our team reassured you from the start.

We’re also so glad the 24–48 hour vet check gave you peace of mind and confirmed she was perfect. Hearing how quickly she’s picked up her training — sit, paw, lie down, great on and off lead, and almost house trained — really does show how clever she is!

Our follow-up calls are something we believe in strongly, so thank you for mentioning that too. Staying in touch and making sure every pup is settling well is really important to us.

Our home is now complete…

The Douglas Hall Kennels were chosen after researching various establishments and reading the reviews from others. They were the right choice.
Betty is a beautiful, healthy, clever, mischievous and loving little cockapoo with a beautiful temperament. As someone said after meeting Betty, your house is now a home!

Very welcoming and knowledgeable. Easy experience and well supported.
Albie is absolutely fantastic and as he was a little bit older (4 months) when we got him his comfort around other dogs and people is a testament to how he’s been reared as a young puppy

Otis our Malshi…

When we decided to have a puppy we searched for a credible kennel.and researched through reviews.This led us to Douglas Hall kennels.From that point they advised us and helped us find the right puppy a Malshi which we named Otis.We couldn't be more greatful Otis is settled in and happy.Thanks Eric and all the staff

We had been a few times to see the…

We had been a few times to see the puppies and every time we visited we was always made to feel at ease and if we needed any help then they would be there. We went back at the end of June and decided to buy our little max the Cavapoo. It was such an easy choice and we had so much help from the people who worked there. It was all so quick and straight forward. He’s been home now just over 3 weeks and it’s like he has always been here. We had a phone-call yesterday of Eric to see how he was settling in which I thought was great, that they checked in and they told us they would always be here if we needed advice or help. Our experience has been great and I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone to buy a puppy or even just visit to see them.

I had a wonderful experience at thr Douglous and it was not a one off , it was several wonderful experiences over several weeks .

I had chosen my puppy a gorgeous Cavapoo but I was still waiting on work to be done at my home ready for my puppy to come home , so the douglas remained looking after my little baby for a month longer than normal so I could get things sorted & in that time I came with my best friend every week to spend time with my puppy.

The staff were great , we had no issues of when we wanted to come or how long we wanted to stay, nothing was a problem, nothing was an issue , each week we would come and bond with our puppy and then it came to finally pop picking him to come home .

He settled in very quickly, he is very sociable, he is very loving, he is very well behaved , he sleeps all through the night wiit no accidents , everyone under the sun stop us wherever we go to stroke him and say hello to him because he is so cute and adorable , he is great with dogs, with children and he has not barked once yet apart from once in his sleep .

He really is a dream , he got a clean bill of health from my own vets and it feels like he has been with me for years .

I highly recommend the Douglous , they are nice people , Neurodivergent friendly, open to anytime you want to know and will do anything to help you out or support whatever you need support with , I could not have asked for a better service and I tell everyone now who asks where I got my cute as a button cavapoo from and proudly so. This is a family run business and I am now a loyal customer and when it comes to getting another puppy or suggesting a place to someone they are always on the top of my list.

I have know idea what magic they sprinkled on my cavapoo but he is like a little angel.

If you are not sure go and visit for yourself and see.....you won't be disappointed
