I've recently been given incorrect and…

I've recently been given incorrect and poor advice in relation to the pay I should be taking as a director. Had I just accepted their recommendation I would be down over 2k per year to save £500 in tax.

I asked the semi-senior accountant multiple times to explain why he gave me that advise and I was just told 'There is nothing stopping you from having the same salary as ****, but it would just mean paying tax each month, we usually recommend a salary which matches your respective tax codes.'

How on earth is this good advice, purely matching opay to tax codes without working the actual tax benefits? If crunch aren't capable of giving financially beneficial advise, then don't offer any advice.

I raised a complaint on the 8th April and had one response, I have still not been given accurate advise on my pay and I am due to be paid in just over a week.

The response times have got very slow and the accuracy of the advise is poor. The app is clunky and every year we have issues with missing transactions even though everything is done through one sole bank account linked with the app.

Great software, but foreign currency needs work

I have been with Crunch for several years now and they have consistently delivered. The software does exactly what it says on the tin, the support team are genuinely responsive and helpful, and for the core use case of a UK freelancer or contractor it is hard to fault.

The reason I am leaving four stars rather than five comes down to foreign currency support. I have a Euro account and do work across Europe, and when I signed up I was led to believe this would be straightforward. In practice, reconciling a foreign currency account turned out to be quite involved. You have to track down the HMRC exchange rates yourself for each month, manually convert your transactions, and reformat everything before you can even upload a CSV. I genuinely do not understand why the platform cannot pull in those rates automatically on the backend and do the conversion at the point of upload. It would save a lot of head scratching.

When I asked Crunch for help with this I was quoted £260 for the privilege, which was a bit of a downer. I did manage to sort it myself in the end, and I will admit I can be a bit of a drama queen about these things, but I do think this is an area where Crunch has real room to improve. Post Brexit, working across European borders is increasingly important for small businesses, freelancers and contractors, and seamless foreign currency handling should be a priority rather than an afterthought.

That said, I do recommend Crunch. For anyone running a straightforward UK operation it remains a solid, reliable choice.

We really appreciate your honest feedback on foreign currency. Crunch is currently optimised for working in GBP; while we do offer foreign currency invoicing, we generally ask that bank accounts be held in Sterling. However, we understand that a growing number of clients now require foreign currency accounts, and we aim to accommodate this where possible.

We know how tedious and time consuming it can be to manually convert statements, and we’re working hard on a solution. We’re excited to share that a new tool is being built to handle those conversions for you automatically (covering EUR, USD, CAD, & AUD accounts to start).

Update: Thanks for providing us with the additional info to get in touch. Someone from our Product team will reach out to see if you’d like to give it a spin before the official launch.

Rapidly declining customer service

I have been with Crunch for over 8 years, and i can hand on heart say in previous years the dedicated account managers were a fantastic resource and totally justified the extra cost.

This appears to have changed recently, instead of next day replies responding with detailed information, i now receive generated responses (probably AI) 3-4 days later and any human responses from emails are taking over a week.

This has exacerbated issues with their system (every year bank integrations are missing banking transactions) which need to be resolved manually at end of year. Every year. As a result its taken months to get the information i've needed to get my accounts ready. They are now overdue and i have not had a response from my last 2 customer support emails sent 6 days ago.

I have been paying £165/month for quality software and dedicated accountants, but now sadly there has been a noticeable decline.

I am still waiting on a response from customer support, Its a telling shame that some sales person will likely respond to this review in less time than they would an existing customer via their support system.

Tax Advice

Extremely helpful and beneficial call for tax efficiency advice.
Glenn Cobb (Accountant) was excellent, knowledgeable, patient, polite and very helpful.

Very impressed!

I lasted no more than three weeks with…

I lasted no more than three weeks with Crunch, as the software lacks many features, most notably the ability to batch-reconcile entries from the same supplier or customer. The system forces you into resolving each entry one at a time, which is incredibly tedious.

Also, their receipt app doesn't let you nominate the expense type at the point of upload, so you have to do that work in the browser, which is frustrating when you've uploaded or photographed 10 receipts from a single supplier. It wasn't until a call with a Success Manager that it was pointed out that you could nominate a default expenditure per supplier beforehand, but this isn't flagged in the customer journey.

Honestly, the platform's UX is below par. It looks polished and lovely, but the user journey is poor.

EDIT: The reply below shows a 'we know best' approach to UX. There is a golden UX rule: Reduce clicks, not increase them. The attempt to automate the reconciliation is admirable, but not providing a user with the ability to batch-select entries and process them forces them into a one-at-a-time mode when the automation fails, breaking this UX tenet.

We take pride in our UX and the efficiency of our software, and feel this doesn't accurately represent the functionality or the support provided during your onboarding.

Regarding the points you raised, we’d love to offer a little more context for anyone else reading.

Auto Match:
We recently launched an Auto Match feature designed to help reconcile bank statement transactions with Crunch entries in bulk. While we are still working on adding even more functionality to this and other areas of Crunch, this feature is specifically designed to eliminate manual reconciliation.

Receipt Capture:
Our SNAP! app is designed for rapid "on-the-go" capture. While it is a third-party tool, we provide extensive help guides on how to use it effectively. We will continue to look at ways to make these resources even more prominent for new users.

Onboarding & Efficiency:
Our Client Success Managers provide software walkthroughs specifically to highlight time-saving features - including default suppliers, auto-match, and recurring invoices. These are core components of our onboarding journey designed to prevent the frustrations you mentioned.

While we're disappointed that Crunch wasn't right for you, we remain confident in the efficiency of our software and service.

Fab online accountants

You can use Crunch as much or as little as you want. I love the bank reconciling system and then when I get stuck I can reach out on live chat or email to get support. The accountant phone calls I've had have helped me save money. Just this week Sean Vaghela talked me through my tax return and it all makes much more sense now.
