Poor customer experience from start to finish. The form was over complicated with end result = we need to talk to you! Had to call a number of times as they didn't return any calls. Email confirmation promised within 2 hours but wasn't sent. When I did finally speak to someone the details were repeatedly entered incorrectly. SDLT payable as per HMRC website which takes 60 seconds not hours and hours

The calls that weren't returned and the confirmation email that didn't arrive are not acceptable, and we understand why that was frustrating. We're sorry too that your details were entered incorrectly when you did get through.
On the form, we'd like to briefly explain why it asks more than a basic calculator. This purchase had a structure that needed closer attention, and our questions are designed to capture not only the figure submitted to HMRC on your behalf but also the relevant details of the transaction, so that HMRC understand the type of purchase structure involved. This gives an exact result, protects you from paying either too much or too little, and reduces the likelihood of HMRC opening an enquiry for further clarification. HMRC's own calculator is a quick guide rather than a full assessment and, by their own acknowledgement, does not cover every set of circumstances. None of that excuses the service issues you ran into, though.

I had problems getting on to the…
I had problems getting on to the portal. The button to press for next or back did not show on my laptop screen and after many attempts at guessing where they were (and a lot of codes being sent to me) I gave up and decided to try on my phone. After that it was ok and the buttons were visible so I could progress. It seems only designed to use on a phone screen?
Anyway apart from that initial frustration it was all fine.

The GOV.UK page returns a figure quickly. It is also an estimator that HMRC themselves caveat as something that cannot be relied on as tax advice, and it does not ask the questions an accurate SDLT assessment turns on. Compass is engaged by your solicitor to do that fuller work and submit the return to HMRC, including any reliefs that may apply, under the duties of a registered tax agent and backed by professional indemnity. The questions take longer to work through, by design. A member of our team will be in touch this week to talk it through with you directly.

We found it difficult to access the…
We found it difficult to access the site on the computer andit would not accept the the verification code at first. We tried about 8 times until it was finally accepted.
It was very difficult to move on from the screen where we compiled a password.
However, the lady who rang us back, to check the details, was excellent.
The complete button was nowhere to be seen and we had to revert to using the mobile phone.

To pay for a service that can ne foumd online is a joke. I foumd them pushy, unhelpfull and rude.
Did not answer my questions, total waste of money and time. What did I get, no clear money saving or advice. The stamp duty was clear on the UK Gov website.

Compass is engaged by solicitors to calculate Stamp Duty Land Tax and submit the return to HMRC on their clients' behalf, including the analysis of any reliefs that may apply. It is a different piece of work from the rate calculator on GOV.UK, and one that sits inside a documented engagement with your solicitor's firm. Where the value of that scope was not clear, we would like to discuss it with you directly, and a member of our team will be in touch this week.
