Thanks Udaybir, this is the most useful review we've had, and two of your three points were right.
The DPT. You were correct. Turns were always meant to be typed as a figure and then sent left or right, relative to the aircraft's own nose, the way the real one is flown. But an arrow key pressed with nothing typed fell back to a 30 degree turn, so the scope could be steered like a car and never ask you for a bearing at all. That is not the skill being measured and it should not have been available. It is gone. An empty pad now sends nothing, and the turn buttons stay greyed out until you type a figure.
Directions and distances. Here we owe you better wording rather than an easier test. No question on that test needs a square root worked out in your head, and none ever has. Every straight-line answer is built from one of five triangles scaled up: 3-4-5, 5-12-13, 8-15-17, 7-24-25, 20-21-29. So 80 north and 60 east is 100, because that is 3-4-5 times twenty. The site knew that and never said it, which left the questions looking like arithmetic you had no time for. The explanation after each one now names the triangle and the scale, and the shortcut is on the test page before you start. The questions themselves are unchanged, because a candidate who has sat the ASP confirmed those questions exist.
The percentage. Both halves of what you saw are working as intended, but the screen was not telling you so. The percentage is measured against a bar we deliberately set above the standard, so over 100 percent is possible and means you cleared it with room spare. Separately, if under 60 percent of your answers were right, the band is held at Developing no matter how high the percentage climbs. That stops a fast run of wrong answers reading as a good one. Put together you get 120 percent and Developing on the same card, which looks like a contradiction when nobody explains it.
We thought hard about your suggestion to cap the score at 100 percent. We have not, because it would hide the difference between just clearing the bar and clearing it comfortably, and that gap is worth knowing before a selection. Instead the results card now says plainly when accuracy is what is holding the band down, and by how much.
